Re: duplicate symbolic link?

Fair enough. I was just wondering whether any system process called on the .old symlink or whether it was just a system quirk. It doesn't matter that much.

duplicate symbolic link?

In my root directory (mint 14 cin), both initrd.img and initrd.img.old come up as symlinks to /boot/initrd.img-3.5.0-17-generic. Why are both of those symlinks there? I thought ".old" usually referred to a different file that had been replaced because it did something different.

Re: the need for a swapfile on a flash drive install

Hi, Vincent, Could you provide me with a link where I can read up on the differences between a swap partition and a swapfile that isn't an actual partition, and the advantages and disadvantages of each? My normal hardware has 2 gig RAM, so I'm going to try creating a 3-gig swap partition on the flas...

the need for a swapfile on a flash drive install

I've been told that, if you have 2 gig of RAM, you need about a 3-gig swapfile for hibernation. If you turn off hibernation, however, do you even need a swapfile, or is 2 gig of RAM going to be enough for most purposes? I ask because I want to install a Linux OS on a 16-gig flash drive so I can carr...

Re: Xfce4-Cinnamon RAM statistics

That's fascinating, Vincent. I still have a very basic install as I haven't optimized my system yet. Perhaps your system is optimized and that's why your Cinnamon has such a tiny footprint. My original install DVD was the Mint 14 x64 Cinnamon 850-meg one. I could have messed things up by creating se...

Xfce4-Cinnamon RAM statistics

I ran the free command on both my main Cinnamon GUI and the Xfce4 I added through Package Manager and this is what I came up with: Cinnamon: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 2051000 1488352 562648 0 42540 701656 -/+ buffers/cache: 744156 1306844 Swap: 3145724 0 3145724 Xfce: total used fre...

[SOLVED] Re: adding Xfce from repositories as second GUI

Okay, I have to say that, fromthe look of those two images, the Mint approach to the UI appeals to me more. I'm tempted to install both the standard Xfce4 and the Mint flavor so I can compare them, but don't want to risk breaking my existing install, so I'll just install the Mint Xfce through Packag...

[SOLVED] adding Xfce from repositories as second GUI

Someone told me that I don't have to download and install the Mint 14 Xfce install DVDs separately, but can instead just keep my existing Cinnamon install and add Xfce to it from the repositories. Please tell me whether that is true. If it's true, please let me know whether there's a relatively bug-...

Re: THE MINT CAFE

Oh, dearl lord, there's a senator (R-Idaho) named Mike Crapo, who's in the news today because of a DUI charge against him. Methinks he's missing a "'p" from his surname.

need to find javascript IDE for Mint

I'm finding that the Scratchpad in the version of Firefox that comes bundled with Mint 14 Cinnamon is not ideal for testing javascript code. Just now, it ran some code and returned true, but when I tried to rerun the code unchanged, it returned /* undefined */ and refused to run it. Also, it returns...

Re: some questions about GNU~linux

Word to the wise, sir/ma'am: if you expect to get any replies on the Linux Mint forum, don't call it "GNU/Linux." There's some kind of political dispute between people who want to call it "GNU/Linux" and those who want to call it just "Linux," and the Mint people appear...

Re: need help with Upload Manager

Thank you so much! It worked perfectly!

I'm learning HTML and made my own temporary homepage for eyetee dot org while I get better at writing code. I much prefer it to the advertising-covered default under construction page that the webhost was using.

Re: changing the root password to something different

Thanks. Will this make the change permanent or is there something else I have to do, just in case I have to shut down and restart Linux?

[SOLVED] need help with Upload Manager

When I configure Upload Manager I get an Unknown Service error. I'm guessing that I'm giving the service the wrong name. Can someone help? This is the data I'm putting in: Service Name: FatCow FTP Host Name: ftp.fatcow.com User ID: [my private ID] Password: [my password] Port: 21 Remote Host Directo...

[SOLVED] changing the root password to something different

Can I change the root password to something different from the password I created for my user account when I installed Mint and want to keep for my user account, and have Mint remember the change even if I have to restart it?
