Re: Dual Boot, Windows 7, would like to install 19.1 on top of 17.3 foot print

you can also simply overwrite that LM17x partition, & from within the LM19x series installer, by simply pointing the installer to that LM17x partition, then checking the Format checkbox & then clicking on Next, to continue with the installation. NB: do be very careful about which partition, that you...

Re: Create Windows 10 Live USB

that Windows Disk is only an Installer & it's not as 'Live Disk' as such. ie: you can place that Windows ISO onto an Usb Stick - - but, it's still only an installer. the closest thing to an 'Live Usb Stick' is Windows-to-go: https://beebom.com/how-create-windows-to-go-usb/ - - which can be made on a...

the machine could last another Five Years, - assuming that it would eventually go out with an hardware failure. that's ignoring security updates etc etc. you could teach her about the Update Manager that is in the Taskbar: - she would only have to do two things - - click on the Icon & type in her pa...

Re: What do the "/" and "/home" mean?

in the LinuxMin19x series - you only need the one partition - - / root - all your programs & data are in that one partition. & where-as in the past you got two - - / root & /swap some folks, like myself, will have Three Partitions - - / root & /swap & /home - the programs are in the / root partition...

Re: Crossover and Office 365?

that Microsoft Office 2016 is quite similar to Microsoft Office 365, and as such has quite similar star ratings .. my own experience, is for simple testing as to whether M$O will work on LinuxMint with Cx itself. and it does seem that the later versions of the ./wine project will run M$O much better...

Re: Microsoft and Linux

it's still not really an GUI environment, as it's still mostly Terminal based.
- - that will change, too, one would assume.

but - it still won't convince anyone who has deliberately Left the Windows environment,
for an Linux environment - - they will be suitably un-impressed.

Re: Dual boot Linux Mint 19.1 Win 10; dual boot shows but can't boot Win 10

the win-10 is on sda2 & the LinuxMint is on sda5 - - so they are intact, at least. you can try using sudo update-grub from Terminal & then reboot into the win-10 system, to see if that update did anything - - else you will now have to use an windows install disk - - to repair the Windows Boot Loader...

Re: Suitable laptop to run Mint?

that Lenovo would be an great candidate for converting to an Linux System.

but, at least initially, you could dual_boot with the existing win-7 system
- then later on, re-install with an Linux only system.

Re: Deleted Mint partitions and now can't boot Ubuntu or Windows

the Grub Boot Loader will point to the Linux System:
- so when you delete that Linux partition - - the Grub Boot Loader is neutered.
you now have to re-install that boot loader - - with the Ubuntu Boot Loader
& which will then detect the existing Windows system.

Re: Volume Boot has only 8.7MB disk space remaining

the thing is, that even 1Gb of size available, you are going to eventually fill it up: - the LM19x series is much different to any previous LinuxMint series, for some reason this upstream issue has not been resolved, to any satisfaction. & so, you do have to regularly prune out some of those older k...
