that is why most of us, have moved to an Linux System,
and then, after some playing around with Linux
- we all wound up using this LinuxMint System -

once you have written the LinuxMint ISO to an usb stick,
then you can reboot, whilst that is still inserted into an usb port,
from where it should get to the LinuxMint Desktop.

if you can get that far, do what mikeflan said above.
- do post back, if you do get stuck, at any point.

is there another SSD in that old HP Laptop

if so, then reboot with that usb stick in it's port,
& check that all of the hardware does work & that the LinuxMint installer can see that other drive.

if there is no other SSD, then you really do have to use an dual_boot scenario.

you could try using an Swap Partition, instead of an Swap File, though.
as that could actually work.
