Re: What sends noobs running back to Windows?

the Modern Linux System does need some regular updates to be installed, as does the Modern Windows System, but when either of those updates cause a crash, then it's both systems, that can be a right PiTA to fix up. there is just as much Bad Advice, when searching for that upgrade issue, that is that...

Re: How do I change the video card.?

those drivers are the issue: so remove any video drivers that you have installed via Control Center - Driver Manager. - then shut-down the machine. thus change the video cards around & re-boot into composite video. & then check via Control Center - Driver Manager,, to see if the new card has any rec...

Re: Mint compatibility with laptops

the decision usually comes with deciding on which partition to Delete & then re-use. & if you back-up the recovery partition to disks - - usually 3 -4 DVDs are needed. then you can now use that partition to re-size the whole HDD & to install that Linux System. you can get lucky with those newer mach...

Re: Mint compatibility with laptops

it's both the UEFI & the Secure Boot thing, that some machines are difficult to deal with. some of the HPs have a recovery partition, system partition, boot partition, C: drive,, so there is no Free Partition to use under ms-dos type partitioning. & that can be a decision to deal with. if you are co...

Another port? would mean another Usb Port to plug that usb stick into. .. how did you get that LM18.3 to install again ? did you use encryption again ?. as you should be able to get LM19 installed . . if you still can't install LM19,, then that's no real issue, as LM18x is valid for a few more years...

Re: Mint compatibility with laptops

can be the same issues with Single Boot, if that is on an more recently made machine: - it's that hardware that was changed with win-8x,, & win-10 machines. one thing that is suggested, is to rip out the existing HDD & replace that with a new & bigger HDD, than the one that the machine comes with - ...

Re: Mint compatibility with laptops

if you can get it - - try obtaining an second-hand Win-7 Laptop,, rather than the later versions of win-8 or win-10,, which are more tricky to convert, - but, not impossible - just not as easy to convert. :) and I've had much success with the Lenovo Brand,, but, also Toshiba, Acer, do work well too....

Re: A "Do nothing" option when you close the laptop lid

But there is that option - from the Control Center - Hardware:
- "when Laptop Lid is Closed " "do nothing".
that option in Power Management - in available in both:
- On AC Power
- On Battery Power
under the Actions area.

you don't see that ? what desktop version of LinuxMint are you using ?.

Re: Setting up Mint for a kid

the Linux System is that much better than that Windows System,, and if the kid does wreck it, then it's so much easier to re-install the original system. in the web browser, maybe an ad-blocker, privacy check, script-block would work too, and if you are concerned enough, then make Two User Accounts:...

Re: Linux Mint 19 - Hard freeze

that error means that the BIOS has failed to find the internal drive,
& so is requesting that you insert an usb stick, so it can now boot from that, instead.
:)
try powering Off the machine, and reboot it, to see if that error still exists.

also - do check that the ISO that you downloaded has the correct checksum:

Yep - - at the Local Store - - you can't get any 2Gb usb drives, anymore, or any 4Gb usb drives, for that matter, as they all seem to be 8Gb or even larger than that. .. last year, I've been able to but a three pack of 8Gb usb drives for $24.95, and the year before that, to buy a three pack of 4Gb u...

Re: I can't install certain software

that Official Repositories Tab - - is greyed out ?
- it shouldn't be. ...
and the two lines, for each mirror ?.

the Usual Default, is that the Ubuntu Mirror is set to the UK, and the LinuxMint Mirror is set to the USA.
- change both to a mirror that is in the UK.
