Software Updates

Just a quick question, I often 'blindly' run the software updates when the small shield turns blue in the bottom-right of my screen, but is this a safe thing to do? Can 'hackers' add malicious software updates through this portal? If so what do you do to check their veracity and how do you prevent t...

Picasa not working on Wine

Hi Xeno, could the same problem be occurring with LMDE? I installed it at the weekend and after much NVidia angst got it running and it looks magic, sadly after installing Wine I couldn't get Picasa to work (despite it working on all other Mint installations that I've tried.
Any ideas?

Re: Sources.list incorrect?

Didn't get much chance to add a PPA, as soon as I finished installation I tried to update the software but was unable to 'fetch' the files, there seems to be plenty of similar threads in these forums and it's not the first time this has happened to me lately with Mint. I'm no coder but a great fan o...

Re: Sources.list incorrect?

Hi Xeno, too late I'm afraid, had to install a different distro on the same partition due to a lack of spare time, will have another go at the weekend but am surprised that there is no default 'sources.list' available....or am I missing something important..... like a security issue?

Sources.list incorrect?

Hi All, just installed 15 Olivia LXCE edition successfully but was surprised when I couldn't get the update-manager to work, when I went into the sources.list I noticed that the paths to all the ubuntu repositories still had Olivia not Raring included. Changed them but still can't seem to get the ma...

Boot-Repair?

Installed 64-bit Nadia Cinnamon BTRFS today and had an error booting, applied "nomodeset" to Grub2 entry which enabled me to login but kept giving a message "error sparse files not found...press any key to continue", searched Askubuntu and found that it was a BTRFS problem http:/...

Screen Lock not working

Just wondered how to report a bug, am using 14 with 'mate' but when I click on 'Lock Screen' icon nothing happens. I find it a very useful tool on other distros.
Any ideas gratefully received.

Re: LM14 Mate won't accept password

Thanks Vincent, that seemed to be the issue, I added nomodeset to the grub menu with the edit facility, however after booting the screen-resolution is so wrong that I can't access the menus....is there a way of accessing the bash-terminal with a keystroke and what should I run?

Re: LM14 Mate won't accept password

Thanks Vincent, but when I just enter u/n and p/w, it appears to accept them but then comes back to a blank login screen.....have re-installed several times but never get past this login screen. Have tried changing session but still get the same error.

LM14 Mate won't accept password

Recently upgraded my PC with a new motherboard and a new SSD (unfortunately shop added win7 on it as SDA). Unfortunately now when I install LM14 Mate (on a different drive/partition) my login won't work, I installed Ubuntu 12.10 on the same partition and that was successful, I realise that this coul...
