Re: Mapping multimedia keys to control spotify

An update - choosing the correct keyboard didn't work, however I have been playing with the fantastic arch and their wiki has some instructions which should be cross platform and involve using dbus to communicate with spotify:https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Spotify#D-Bus. I haven't tried in min...

Re: Bittorrent Sync User or BTSYNC software install HOWTO

Can you provide a little bit more info?

Are they all running 1.3 or 1.4? The native 1.4 installer offers a pretty nice web UI on localhost:4444. I did have problems syncing between 1.3 and 1.4 but have had no problems at all synching between 1.3 to 1.3 ot 1.4 to 1.4.

Why I moved to KDE from Cinnamon (and what I miss)

First, I love Cinnamon, I really do. Out of the box it has a bunch of sane settings which give the right level of jazz and bling but isn't too distracting. Cntrl-Alt-T opens a terminal which is really useful and the theme is spot on (regardless of some people's objection to green :)). It also has th...

Re: setting to launch app from same monitor it was launched

I achieve something similar by setting System Settings -> Window Behaviour -> Advanced -> Placement to "Under Mouse".

Mapping multimedia keys to control spotify

Hi all, When I ran spotify under cinnamon 2.2 it seemed to be integrated really nicely with the sound applet/tray icon (whatever they are called nowadays). My keyboard (Microsoft 4000 something or other) has some media buttons including a play/pause which worked out of the box. In KDE, the volume co...

Re: How do you organise your (filesystem) stuff?

One extra requirement if I may - it should be fantastic if a sensible approach to bookmarking was suggested. I care more about organising information that I do about where that information came from. The more I think about it the more I realise I want to use Evernote as an engine with a filesystem f...

How do you organise your (filesystem) stuff?

Hi all, I go through a regular process of "right, let's organise this mess" and come up with a really nice denormalised hierarchy on the filesystem. I am very disciplined and use that hierarchy.....until I don't, it all gets messy and then I think "right, let's organise this mess" only now the mess ...

Problem with the photo desklet (cinnamon/2.2)

Hi all, I have about 50GB of photos, with maybe a few thousand in the top level Pictures directory. If I add the photo desktlet then 3 out of 4 cores hit 99% with cinnamon being the culprit (at around 340% CPU). I thought maybe it was just indexing them or something, but I can wait a number of minut...

Re: gthumb and shotwell help

Interesting. I am not used to wine being so mature and viable since the last time I used it, it was really flaky. That was years ago mind. Thanks Spearmint2.

gthumb and shotwell help

Hi all, Nothing to do with Mint per se but I am undecided between gthumb and shotwell. Both look excellent, but neither does exactly what I want to manage my 40+ GB photo library (those pesky kids :)!). gThumb is great as it doesn't have a heavy "import into library" process - it just reads the file...

Re: Photo management software

At first I thought huh? But then I realised it had been a while since I had seen any ads....since about the same time I installed adblock actually :)! To be fair to Linux Mint, that is how it gets its revenue so I have disabled it for this site, but if you haven't checked out adblock - it is pretty ...

Re: Photo management software

I think I am going to do a different route. I am going to use a local photo manager and use btsync to backup the filesystem offsite.

Re: Photo management software

Hi gtsfer, I am running Cinnamon. I can see it an install it without issue. My concern is the fact it is no longer actively developed by google. Hi Spearmint2, ah yes, one of the oldies. Unfortunately they claim they don't have a Linux version. Quite disappointed with google and their approach to Li...

I have just replaced dropbox with this. Set up a persistent RO peer on my companies net and now all my family's hardware are backup up to that. Love it!

Re: Preview pressing space in nemo?

I can't tell you how embarrassed I am that after using Linux for 20 years and administering hundreds of debian virtual machines on a private xen cloud that it didn't occur to me to apt-cache search for nemo-preview whilst trying to find a preview plugin for nemo.

:).

Re: Window settings per application (Cinnamon 2.2)

That works for native apos but not skype unfortunately. I also haven't checked if that applies to the window settings.

I haven't had the greatest success with that even with native windows. Thunderbird will open in its previous workspace but not the terminal for example.

Re: Preview pressing space in nemo?

No, that isn't quite it. I am talking about a preview window. Think of it like a great big tool tip filled entirely with the contents of the window. Clicking elsewhere or pressing escape closes it. Pressing left/right navigates to the next file. It sounds quite gimicky, but it is quite effective for...

Re: Window settings per application (Cinnamon 2.2)

Interesting, maybe it is something specific to skype then. Any hints about retaining the settings between sessions? I'm using Mint 17 MATE and just tried what you said, but didn't have the same experience. I went to workspace right and opened caja. I then right clked on a folder and chose to open in...
