Re: Firefox 57 is using too much RAM

I noticed Firefox 57 is using too much RAM (I chose to use just a single process), with 5-6 tabs opened it uses around 800MB of RAM. It's not relatively much keeping in mind I have 8GB, but it wasn't like that before. The worst thing is that even if I close the tabs, it keeps using the same amount ...

[Solved] Mint 18.2->18.3 upgrade Thunderbird install fails

I let the update manager loose when the updates notifier alerted that updates were available and it said upgrade to 18.3 available so said "yes". Thunderbird upgrade to (1:52.5.0+build1-0ubuntu0.16.04.1 failed. Repeatedly. Tried software manager, synaptic "fix" options in gui menus - pushed and pull...

Re: Increasing monrefresh rate from 50hz to its 75hz capacity

I really understand you, I have three sons that are severely visually impaired Really sorry to hear that (as a father myself) much heartfelt "but for the grace of God" good wishes winging their way to you (hopefully) Yes, that trick did the trick, gave me a 60 or 75 option, and it seems to be runni...

Re: Increasing monrefresh rate from 50hz to its 75hz capacity

Try 'Screen Resolution' under 'Preferences'. I should have said that I had tried that one (button on menu) and the monitor was only marked as a generic vesa and the only refresh allowed to me was 50hz at 1280x1024. Sorry, incomplete information. Also the video card is a PCI-E FX5200 with 512mb of r...

Increasing monrefresh rate from 50hz to its 75hz capacity

I'm still in culture shock having abandoned Suse for ideological reasons >;) I have a neuropathic degenerative condition and my eyes aren't what they were and I just noticed that on screen resolution the monitor (an Iiyama Prolite E1900S) is running at 50hz refresh, which looks like its just been ma...

Use of old laptops for Mint remotely save them from scrap!

I've 3 old laptops in the 400-ghz range which aren't really up to much anymore, but with serious spinal injuries (cue strings lah dee dah la da dee dah) and polymyalgia sitting at desks ain't good for me, so I want to be able to go back to bed and recline on the raiseable backrest... I've "scroogled...

Thanks for all the help on Lexmark 1180 print install

But now I need a tutorial in how to FIND the original thread - I've searched on 1180 and Lexmark and none of them were mine! The instuctions and cut and paste command linest someone posted up for installing a s680 (z680?) worked fine apart from one bit - a file marked s19 wasn't there in the directo...

Re: Baffing install&run on boot of mintupdate ON Ub-STUDIO!!

everything involved in Ubuntu Studio can be installed seperately by synaptic and bolted on top of Mint. Works fine. Call it "Mint Studio" if you'd like. Did this for my wife since she had need/desire for some Studio apps but I wanted to keep Mint for everyone to keep my sysad work lighter. As we do...

Re: Baffing install&run on boot of mintupdate ON Ub-STUDIO!!

If you open a terminal you could try sudo apt-get purge mintupdate Thanks "67" - that did the trick nicely. Quick and direct and friendly forum advice to a relative newbie is a big plus point scored for the Mint community the last 24hrs in my book - I'm recommending Mint to all and sundry as I appr...

Re: Linux Mint 5 Elyssa XFCE Community Edition

Well done and congratulations! I've been waiting for this low overhead variant to install on some of the older items on our household "museum of late 20th and early 21st century computing"! I'm just an ordinary Linux user (err, a luser?) with few technical skills, but the family have found that Mint...

Baffing install&run on boot of mintupdate ON Ub-STUDIO!!

I have no idea how my daughter (11) managed to do this but somehow she succeeded in setting up mintupdate so that it runs on booting on Ubuntu *Studio* .... AND it is consuming some 530mb of ram while running and 99% of the cpu. She (more precisely *I*) have to use system monitor proggie to kill the...
