Re: China and need to buy new laptop. How to guess which one is Linux friendly?

Thank you. So I am understanding Dell are always a safe bet with linux? Most dell models seem to work well with linux but not all. Your Idea of taking a live usb stick with you and trying out before you buy is a good Idea. this page may give you some ideas also. https://makeawebsitehub.com/best-lap...

Re: Wlan Hard Blocked: Yes

First you should not use UKUU to install kernels in Mint. Use the update manager to install newer or older kernels. Please tell us which machine you are using there has to be a manual switch or some combination of keys that turns the Card on and off. on my Laptop it's FN+f2 key. so look in the machi...

Re: Desktop freezing - graphics errors

You have a Nvidia graphics card and you need to go to Driver Manager and install the recommended Nvidia driver for that card, that should take care of the graphics errors and maybe the freezes as well. Also as DAMIEN1307 posted something did not install properly and it may have been a corrupted down...

Re: China and need to buy new laptop. How to guess which one is Linux friendly?

I have both a Lenovo Ideapad and Dell 15 series and both work well with Linux.
I have also used a Lenovo T430 without problems.
had an HP that worked after a bit of fussing with the UEFI - But wouldn't recommend it for someone just starting in linux.
good luck in your search.

Re: problems after updating grub

you have some broken packages on your system which must first be cleared in order to install anything. you can do that two ways. 1. go to Synaptic package manager and under the edit tab select fix broken packages, then hit apply. Or 2. go to a terminal and issue this command sudo dpkg --cofigure -a ...

Re: Linux Mint and DELL Precision 5510 Wireless

after doing some research on your Dell model , seems it worked ok with Ubuntu 14.04 /Mint 17.x series. But may not work well with newer versions. It has an Intel wireless card Which does not work well with newer Kernels. These pages from Dell may be of help. http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en...

The permanent fix is to reinstall grub as the post said. If that did not work try this in a terminal.

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub

Re: Can anybody confirm stable work of Mint Mate on Dell XPS 9360?

pretty much the hardware issues will be the same as Ubuntu's if it's going to work it should work on Ubuntu 18.04 which Mint 19 will be base upon. so I would give ubuntu 18.04 a try see if the touch pad works? You should be able to tell from the Live .iso. Other than that I would also check with Del...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

During my search for a new distro I installed Mint Cinnamon and immediately ran into a showstopper issue. The issue was that I could not access my backup drives, which are standard USB WD Passport drives. When I attempted to open a drive with the default file browser, I got an error saying that the...

Re: Help me figure out why I can't connect to 5GHz wifi

you may have to tell your router which channel you want to use. The card will usually pick the strongest signal channel and use that one. I have a netgear router and had to go in to it's control panel and choose channel 42 think it was to get it to pick up 5GHZ. other wise it always gave me 2.4 on c...

4.16 is not official for Mint yet and there will be some things that are not included patches in the vinilla package.
4.10 had some problems with my dell. I would go back to 4.4.x
