Re: if i use "sudo apt-get install kdenlive" will i get the latest version?

The reason they are most likely recommending the appimage until ubuntu 18.04 /Mint 19.x is because it requires dependencies that may not be available in 16.04.x /Mint 18.x so I would download and use the appimage they work great in mint.

Re: Linux Mint XFCE close to KDE's end?

If there were plans to stop putting out Xfce editions, this forum probably would be on fire. BTW, I have no idea what thumbnail you're talking about. Everything there looks the same to me. I think he's talking about the little boxes under the main picture they used to scroll revealing xfce and kde ...

Re: Using wget to download dangerous files

it really does not matter what you use it's not the download that is the problem it's when you veiw the file. You can set most down loaders to not open files automatically. Best advise don't put such files on your HD. download to a virtual partition or folder. or to a firejail environment. https://f...

Re: Which version for old PC

Hello diabolikos and Welcome to the Mint forums, If that machine has the original amount of ram I'm not sure any version of mint will work well. If you can get the ram up to say 2 gbs. it would help a lot then I would recommend XFCE version. But as others have said another distro may be more appropr...

as it begins to boot us hit the esc key repeatedly and when the grub menu comes up hit e to edit it. The look for the line of code that ends in "quite Splash" place the boot parameter after quiet splash. if that does not work do it again and and delete "quiet splash" and then add...

Re: Mint stops loading on mint logo

If in fact you did the upgrade and the kernel was upgraded you should be able to boot to the old kernel and it should work. You'll need to hit the esc key just as grub is coming up to get to the grub menu - and then select the old kernel and boot from that, once it boots go to update manager and cli...

Welcome to Linux Mint Forums, Good to have your here :) A few things you can try see how they go. 1. in Synaptic go to edit tab and click on fix broken packages - sometimes a package install is interrupted and that messes up the system. 2. in a terminal type the following commands one at a time: sud...

Re: Multiple OS's and the boot screen?

Normally grub will show a list of available windows/linux os to boot to with the last linux distro installed first on the list and the default boot. Unless you have altered the grub menu in some way. The linux splash screen you will see will depend on the distro you boot to. Hope this helps.

Re: Wifi only available after restarting computer

try this next time it will not connect wait a minute and see if wifi starts working?

Code: Select all

systemctl restart network-manager.service

if it connects after that the problem is that systemd is not starting NM at boot for some reason.
If that is the case I would recommend upgrading to 18.3.

Not silly at all.
you need to run those commands in a terminal proceeded by sudo and enter your password. do them one at a time.
from the file where you downloaded to.

Re: wifi, kernel upgrade, ndiswrapper, dkms, etc.

It may be easier in the long run to simpley buy a new usb dongle that will work with linux drivers. here are some possibilities: http://willhaley.com/blog/linux-usb-wifi/ also unless she deleted the old kernel it should still be available until you can get the new ndiswrapper fixed. good luck.

Next time if fails to detect the network please run the following command

Code: Select all

rfkill list

and post the output.

It seems for some reason it's not detecting the card at all.

Well according to Hp site here https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/models/deskjet_aio/deskjet_2050_j510_series#distros it should be support , though the hplip version listed for it is quite old. so you should be able to get it working. try manually installing it by going to a web...

Re: No WIFI Asus N53

That card is pretty old now. so couldn't find much on it. But this git hub site: https://github.com/unused/patched-Asus-PCE-N53-linux-driver may offer some help. you may have to downgrade the kernel to 4.4 series if if your on 4.10 for it to work. good luck
