Re: Can only log in as root

dirty memory can cause the problems you mentioned but you should do a scan of the hard drive, I'll bet it's going bad.

Re: Worried about the future: Linux Mint 19

synaptic does indeed install and run on ubuntu 18.04 just did that yesterday, the problem with synaptic comes in if you choose to run the wayland server instead of x.org. Synaptic nor gdebi will not run under wayland last time I tried it. Don't believe that's been fixed yet. That may be one reason t...

Re: Freez locked-up

hello Clon and Welcome to Linux Mint Forums, You need to install the correct Nvidia driver for that card. Nouveau is not stable. Please go to Menu >Adiministration >Driver Manager and install the recommended Nvidia driver for your card. See this release note for more info: https://linuxmint.com/rel_...

Re: Dual Boot Wifi Issues

Hello WildWestCowBoy and Welcome to Linux MInt Forums, Unfortunately the wireless card you have is very problematic as realtek has a very spotty linux driver history. Best advise would be to get a usb wifi dongle known to work with linux and get connected first. Then work on the rtl8821ae. There are...

Re: replace kde plasma under mint 18.3

I have to agree the best solution to this is move to a distro with newer and updated versions of plasma. Unfortunately with the coming of Mint 19.x KDE will no longer be supported as a default desktop and that will make it very difficult (not impossible) to keep kde up to date. my Suggestions would ...

Re: How can I customize Mint XFCE?

one of the great things about XFCE is that it is very customizable, One of the first things I do is add a panel at the top so I can have a separate panel for launching apps. (I set this one to auto hide) Also I usually add the weather app to the bottom panel. and set the clock to 24 hour time. All d...

Re: Linux Mint vs Debian

As has been said already only you can really choose which one will fit your computer needs day to day. For me it's been Mint for quite some time. I used Debian for many years, and once set up the way you like there is not much maintenance needed, but the software can get kinda stale as to begin with...

Re: No Network Connections • 18.3 "Sylvia"

You are correct on the drivers you've installed so far. I did not see you ethernet card listed in the out put you posted so can't help you with that yet.
Good luck. That first dongle is know to be difficult to get going so you may be better off sticking with the one that works.

Re: Ubuntu 18.04 is almost here.

I too have tried the beta and Like it. But the memory leak is a very real problem with my hardware, though there is a manual work around, you have to remember to it ever 30 mins or so or things begin to slow to a crawl on my hardware anyway. Still don't think wayland is really ready for prime time a...

Hi cadvan and Welcome to Linux Mint Forums, Do not know if I can be of help about the problem on the desktop, but it could be a difference in the machines themselves. one thing that may be helpful to those trying to help would be an over view of the system. If you would go to a terminal and type thi...

This Ask Ubuntu post may be of Help. if you can get a temporary Ethernet connection that would be great. If not you'll have to down load the driver and associated file on another computer and put it on disk or usb stick and install it manually. (Note: for future reference when you post terminal out ...
