Re: Can't install/update xapp after upgrading to Mint 21.3
I have partially solved this by installing xdg-desktop-portal-xapp and xdg-desktop-portal-xapp-dt. ( I get the launch screen for hydrogen from flathub now.) I also had to enable flathub and warhouse-orign repos. flatpak remote-modify --enable flathub flatpak remote-modify --enable warehouse-origin s...

Re: How to create bare-metal boot drive using VirtualBox
No. However, 16MB may be the available "freespace" on /dev/sda Even as root you would have to use some sort of force option with any tool to overwrite the drive structure/partitions. And typically, I would probably convert to an img file if possible then just use ddrescue to do the copy. A...

Re: polkit core dump every time a gui app tries to elevate (eg mint update)
Solution: Clean install, (of 21.3 Virginia). Not what I was hoping for, but I figured out what caused my issue: Installing Python Devkits for developing GUI apps. (Possibly Eclipse). That broke pkexec and other system functions relying on python3. (Even though python3 itself didn't change apparently...

Re: polkit core dump every time a gui app tries to elevate (eg mint update)
Actually, now that I think about it, one thing that changed since I switched to the 21.x series, is I switched to using VMware Workstation from Virtualbox due to work requirements. I wonder if the kernel modules for vmware are conflicting with polkit? (I have to reinstall the modules every time the ...

Re: polkit core dump every time a gui app tries to elevate (eg mint update)
Tried that last night. However, it seems I have had this issue since I switched to 21.x series, but didn't realize it as I don't often install "new" software, and usually do my updates from the command line. I can work around it as synaptic still works (uses sudo not pkexec). And looking a...

Found the core dumps under /var/lib/systemd/coredump Output of latest coredump from polkit is: coredumpctl dump --output=core.polkitd.0.560cdd9a17e8465cb8038195f7f98b75.7021.1704427705000000 PID: 7021 (polkitd) UID: 0 (root) GID: 0 (root) Signal: 11 (SEGV) Timestamp: Thu 2024-01-04 23:08:25 EST (15m...

Re: polkit core dump every time a gui app tries to elevate (eg mint update)
Can someone at least enlighten me as to where polkit1 saves it's dumps? I've tried re-installing polkit and it's dependencies, pkexec and it's dependencies, apt-daemon and it's dependencies, and dbus and it's dependencies based on "similar" issues on other platforms. (i.e. same error messa...

Broadcom NetXtreme, tg3 driver and Jumbo Frames
I have a Broadcom NetXtreme BCM5761 Gigabit ethernet PCIe adapter. (Onboard). Specs say it supports jumbo frames. (Broadcom's and Dell's). the tg3 driver in use does NOT allow setting the MTU to anything BUT 1500. (For that mater my Dell DisplayPort Dock also supports Jumbo Frames but it's driver al...

Re: xrandr --listactivemonitors output
Ok, did updates last night, and there is new info in the manpage. that seems to answer the question: --listmonitors Report information about all defined monitors. --listactivemonitors Report information about currently active monitors. --setmonitor name geometry outputs Define a new monitor with the...

Re: xrandr --listactivemonitors output
Well, using some simple Math, I was able to confirm the Left, Top, Height, Width ones. Just not the 2 unknowns. And you are correct sir, there is no available documentation I can find for that, or I wouldn't be here. I finally got to the point to be able to extract all that info into an AoH in perl ...

I am trying to figure out what ALL of the numbers mean in the output from 'xrandr --listactivemonitors' For example, my output is: Monitors: 5 0: +DP-5 3440/800x1440/335+3840+0 DP-5 1: +DP-0 1440/408x900/255+7280+540 DP-0 2: +DP-3 1440/408x900/255+8720+540 DP-3 3: +DVI-I-2-2 1920/508x1080/286+1920+3...

Re: Linux Mint 21.1 switching from Cinnamon to XFCE
Apparently, the trick is to install XFCE4 first. As there is a crossover on files used by both, that xfce cares about, but cinnamon does not at install time. The issue being xfce4-desktop (apparently a meta package that flags some necessary dependencies) wouldn't install due to this. So yes, I had t...

Re: Linux Mint 21.1 switching from Cinnamon to XFCE
I did that. No change in the result. It looks like Cinnamon and XFCE cannot co-reside on the same install. I had to purge Cinnamon completely before XFCE would show up as an option to sign in with. I don't know if this is a bug or what. Remove did not work to allow XFCE to show up. Other similar pos...

Linux Mint 21.1 switching from Cinnamon to XFCE
I've been running Cinnamon, as I liked some of the extra features, but I decided I didn't like them enough to keep running cinnamon. I installed Xfce4, and all its accoutrements. mint-xfce-info refuses to install due to a common file shared with mint-cinnamon-info. Other than that, xfce4 shows insta...

Re: LM 20.3 r8169 ethernet stopps working
Blacklisting r8169, and installing r8168-dkms fixed this issue for me. I wasn't having the issue until today, when I received a new kernel. I have an ASUS TP500LA, whose ethernet adapter is an 8168. I guess the framing is off with the 8169 driver as it caused my router to crap out as well, and took ...

Re: [SOLVED] Have Synergy 1 Pro running before login - Mint 20 Ulyana
I have tried this on Linux Mint 20.1
The file I have it in is Mint 20 uses lightdm so from the link i added the following to /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/70-linuxmint.conf
When I add those lines, the greeter never loads, so I cannot sign in. Comment out those lines the greeter loads.

Re: USB to LAN and vice versa
"USB" to lan converter cannot be plugged into your switch, do not do it! The USB Port puts out voltage levels on different pairings than POE would. You can use the Wiring, just don't plug it into your network! A "USB" to lan converter is a network device, not a usb port sharing d...

Video Cards from Different Vendors.
Much to my surprise, many people claimed it's not possible to use 2 video cards on one X session from different vendors. That is a fallacy. I am using an AMD Radeon Cedar Series card and an NVIDIA C96CGL (Quadro FX 580). I am using the default open source drivers with XFCE on LM 20. I have a Dell Pr...
