Re: Installation on Dell Inspiron 24 5000 All-In-One
Hi photojohn, yes, Mint should run well on that system, and really on any desktop or laptop that comes with Windows pre-installed. I've been running Mint on two or three Dell computers; different ones from the one you're considering, but there is, as far as I can see, nothing particularly novel or r...

Re: [SOLVED] Laptop camera no longer detected
OK, so here's an obvious thing I hadn't done, stupid me: close the lid and open it again.
Did that, restarted... and lo' and behold, the camera works again.
Keeping my fingers crossed that it'll stay that way...

[SOLVED] Laptop camera no longer detected
Hi everyone. I've been using this laptop for over half a year with Mint XFCE on it and no camera problems. In fact, I was on Zoom a little earlier in the day, camera worked fine. I don't even think I powered the computer down after that Zoom conversation, but when perhaps an hour later I joined anot...

Re: Zoom issue when admitting from waiting room
And how would you determine whether the issue really is low RAM capacity and/or processor speed?

Re: Zoom issue when admitting from waiting room
The thing is that you sometimes have no choice but to use Zoom. If you're a student and your teachers use Zoom to conduct their classes, it doesn't help you to know that there might be safer and better video conferencing apps out there. You're expected to use Zoom. And if your teacher uses Zoom's wa...

Re: (SOLVED) Loud fans, high temperatures on Lenovo Ideapad 5 after upgrade to 20.1
Thank you, SMG!
The computer's been running nice and quiet most of the time, so I'm happy and marking the thread as solved.

Re: Loud fans, high temperatures on Lenovo Ideapad 5 after upgrade to 20.1
P.S.
Just wondering: what would be normal, acceptable max values for temperature, roughly?
If sensors says "(high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)", does that mean that a value of 97°C showing up in Psensor is worrisome?

Re: Loud fans, high temperatures on Lenovo Ideapad 5 after upgrade to 20.1
Thank you, SMG , that looks like very good advice! I was running the 5.6 Kernel because of sound problems in 5.4 (that were resolved in 5.6), but hadn't noticed that 5.8 is now supported. So I upgraded, as you suggested. I can't give any conclusive statements yet on whether the fan problems are solv...

[SOLVED] Loud fans, high temperatures on Lenovo Ideapad 5 after upgrade to 20.1
Hi everyone, after upgrading from Mint 20 XFCE to 20.1 (via update manager), I find the fans on my Lenovo Ideapad 5 rather noisy. Also on Mint 20 this machine wasn't the most quiet for me, and though it's never felt scarily hot, the readouts I got on Psensor always tended to be a bit on the high sid...

Re: No sound after kernel update to 5.4.0-40.44
I do wonder if this might be affecting your sound instead of pulseaudio: [ 20.407259] Lockdown: systemd-logind: hibernation is restricted; see man kernel_lockdown.7 Could that mean that before that start-up, I hadn't shut down the computer; but had let it go (unintentionally, and apparently unsucce...

I rebooted ( before I saw Mr. Een's 10:41 reply), and now sound is back on... :? dmesg | grep -C1 -E 'ALSA|HDA|sof|HDMI|snd[_-]|sound|hda.codec|hda.intel' output is now: [ 0.105575] ACPI: Added _OSI(Linux-Dell-Video) [ 0.105575] ACPI: Added _OSI(Linux-Lenovo-NV-HDMI-Audio) [ 0.105576] ACPI: Added _O...

Re: [SOLVED] No sound after kernel update to 5.4.0-40.44
And what's the first thing I see after I boot up my computer again? The volume control panel icon x-ed out, showing the tool tip "Not connected to the PulseAudio server." Arrrgh! Tried to play a YouTube video, so as to see whether there really is no sound... and it won't even play the vide...

Re: No sound after pulseaudio, kernel updates
I'm running my machine now on kernel 5.6.0-1010-oem (which I got from here: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-oem-5.6 ), and the sound is working! It seems that there was a kernel regression after 5.4.0-26 that affected this particular Lenovo Ideapad, and probably not many other computers. ...

Re: No sound after pulseaudio, kernel updates
That last command didn't do me any good. Killed the legacy driver, I guess: no sound from speakers, no configuration options in volume control. Dmesg now only says: gogo@gogo-IdeaPad-5-15IIL05:~$ dmesg | grep -C1 -E 'ALSA|HDA|sof|HDMI|snd[_-]|sound|hda.codec|hda.intel' [ 0.108075] ACPI: Added _OSI(L...

Re: No sound after pulseaudio, kernel updates
I think the dmic_detect parameter is why it worked then broke. For that kernel, it's the wrong parameter anyway, so run this then reboot and tell me where things stand: sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-fix.conf <<<'options snd-intel-dspcfg dsp_driver=1' Progress: Sound is coming from speakers! Though ...

Re: No sound after pulseaudio, kernel updates
I'm marking this discussion "Solved." I spoke too early; my sound is broken again. I applied an update that was called something like "linux image base," and that's what seemed to break it again. Went back to my system snapshot from yesterday morning, and sound then worked. Open...
