OK, so here's an obvious thing I hadn't done, stupid me: close the lid and open it again.
Did that, restarted... and lo' and behold, the camera works again.

I'm running my machine now on kernel 5.6.0-1010-oem (which I got from here: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-oem-5.6 ), and the sound is working! That last command didn't do me any good. Killed the legacy driver, I guess: no sound from speakers, no configuration options in volume control. I think the dmic_detect parameter is why it worked then broke. For that kernel, it's the wrong parameter anyway, so run this then reboot and tell me where things stand: sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-fix.conf <<<'options snd-intel-dspcfg dsp_driver=1' Progress: Sound is coming from speakers!
