Re: trying to back up personal folders to usb drive

Could be that the backup drive is not mounted or not mounted where you think it is. Find out with this command sudo lsblk Command to backup your user folders should be something like rsync -a --delete /home/$USER /media/$USER/backup Use double quotes if the path contains spaces, "/home/$USER&qu...

Re: How to synchronize 2 computers on Local Network

I can't get rsync to work. Trying to copy contents from /Downloads folder on my laptop to my Desktop machine (192.168.1.2). Here is the command I'm using on the laptop: rsync -avz Downloads/ root@192.168.1.2:/home/larry/Downloads Both machines have rsync installed. Here is what I get when I run it:...

Re: new tabs on firefox

Firefox has a setting named browser.link.open_newwindow with a default value of 3, change it to 1 or 2 to control how FF opens links.

Re: How can one block unwanted updates from the main repository?

In Update Manager you can set unwanted packages on ignore. When they come up for update, right-click, select Ignore, and they will never update again. Mine includes Firefox and Skypeforlinux.

Re: Laptop does not auto-suspend

I found this here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AMD_Catalyst At the top it says in bold: "Catalyst packages are no longer offered in the official repositories. It is no longer updated by AMD and does not support the latest Xorg, s o installing an old Xorg is required ." A new X.Org...

Re: Problem Intel graphics

After updating to the latest kernel (4.4.0-109) my Intel graphics unit (SkyLake Integrated Graphics (8086:1912) rev. 06) makes trouble. The desktop flickers. Loading an older kernel (3.19.0.-32) solves the problem. I am using Mint 17.3 Cinnamon, 64 bit. The system is actually updated (sudo apt-get ...

Re: Laptop does not auto-suspend

But after x minutes of inactivity it does NOT auto-suspend. It just blanks the screen and may log me out. Have you already checked your power settings? Are they configured properly? Yeah, auto-suspend is set to x minutes for both AC & battery power. $ inxi -F System: Host: A8 Kernel: 4.2.0-42-g...

Laptop does not auto-suspend

If I click on the Suspend button, it goes to sleep just fine. But after x minutes of inactivity it does NOT auto-suspend. It just blanks the screen and may log me out.

I have both LM 17.3 and 18.3 installed and neither OS will auto-suspend. Auto-suspend used to work before, any ideas?

Re: Skype 8.13.0.2

Right, the new version doesn't work at all. I downloaded & installed Skype version 8.11.0.4 (skypeforlinux-64.deb) which works. As soon as Update Manager offered to install the update, I put Skype on ignore.

Re: How to update your kernel for Meltdown

Thank you. So no patches will be installed automatically by Update Manager? i.e. one has to manually install the kernel you specified above?

If one does not wish to install patches for the time being, they don't have to do anything?

Re: ATTN!...Intel CPU owners (Spectre & Meltdown flaws)

What about virtual machines? Will a Windows 10 running in VirtualBox download patches? Does a guest OS even have direct access to the host's kernel memory?

I have my eye on that one too, except the Ryzen version for obvious reasons -- HP ENVY x360 15z
