Re: First time listener, first time caller

Enjoy your journey with Linux. Mint is good, Ubuntu is good.

I am sure when you're ready to mount Olivia she'll be waiting for you

Re: Display buttons gone into a 'low resolution' mode

hi Spearmint I don't think it is the resolution itself which is on 1366x768, the same as my windows laptop. (It is an Acer Aspire E1). I am sure it is something to do with theme settings or something like that. However, I reset my Cinnamon to defaults and this didn't help. The top border is followin...

Display buttons gone into a 'low resolution' mode

Mint 15 Cinnamon. I am struggling to explain this... after an update the control buttons on firefox, libreoffice and other apps have gone into a kind of grey 2d low resolution mode. Doesn't seem to matter what theme I select. Terminal and Nemo seem to be OK.

Firefox search engine changed to Yahoo after upgrade

I just received an uprade to Firefox 23 for Linux Mint and it changed my default search engine from google to yahoo. I don't know the politics behind this but it is somewhat inconsiderate to change someone's choice of search engine in an upgrade...

Re: Programs not showing in System Tray, and other issues

Right click on panel
Click add applets to panel
Make sure Cinnamon Window List etc are turned on (some should be by default).
You can also add Windows List with App Grouping from 'get more online'.

Re: The PC won't wake up after suspend or hibernate

When you say it doesn't work, do you mean the kernel upgrade didn't work, the PC doesn't work or the problem still persists? :(

Re: The PC won't wake up after suspend or hibernate

Try this http://www.upubuntu.com/2013/05/linux-kernel-394-released-for.html Note Well: Via the terminal, issue these commands under Ubuntu/Linux Mint at your own risk : Good luck and you can always remove it if it causes more problems. Suggest making a note of the remove command - just in case :mrgr...

Re: Hp printer problems

I found I needed to use the hplip software to get my all in one to scan. i also had to run 'hp-doctor' to install the various extra libs and things - twice! a pain but part of the linux learning curve :D

go to print settings, output mode, and try black only grayscale

With respect to my higher level brothers, that is hardly the same thing as a bar or dock with app grouping.... :?

Re: Best vertical panel solution for Cinnamon?

No answers, hey? I also have a short fat screen so would value a left or right side panel. I use synapse as a 'dash' equivalent so rarely use the cinnamon menu for anything.
Using Cairo-dock as a panel in the meantime. The windows 7 impersonator app has bugs especially with libreoffice.

I hope Linux Mint does not drop Ubuntu.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_%28philosophy%29

Surely the philopsophy of Ubuntu is what Linux Community is all about.

But then I am an idealist.....

Dear Dr Hu

Doctor Who?

Thanks for your reply which is very very helpful

I did find out how to control the brightness from one of the articles which was very helpful.

And it does seem like quite a nice little machine!!

Best wishes

Acer E1-571 i5 Some issues

Should have checked for compatibility before loading Linux.....
Cannot dim screen via keys or applet.
Resolution max 1366x768 should be higher?
Any ideas on enabling Turbo boost?
