Re: is mint available for the EEE701 4gb

I've run it 'live'.... look's wise it was a good fit for the screen and the 'alt + left click' allows you to move the windows to gain access to the 'buttons'. one issue is a lack of 'wireless', another is the lack of control for sound... it's either on or off with no control on the volume. Possibly ...

Re: is mint available for the EEE701 4gb

Funny you should mention that.... I have managed to borrow an external DVD drive today. Going to give mint a try 'live' and see how it goes. How do I work out how much space the distro will take up if I install it? Would I be correct in assuming I could remove things like brasero to reduce the 'foot...

Re: Missing TaskBar

Do you have 'autohide' or 'show hide buttons' enabled? if so you should have a small icon < in one corner, clicking it should bring it back into view.

Hope this helps.

Edit due to appalling spelling...

Re: Partitions, are they correct

Hi Fred and Acid_1, Well I got brave and went for it... used gparted and created the partitions. Not too difficult after taking the time to look around the gui. Then a clean install of elyssa, so far so good. Thanks for the help.... onwards and upwards. Really love this OS, just wish I could get it ...

Re: is mint available for the EEE701 4gb

Thanks for the replies.... was hoping it would be a case of 'working straight out of the box' as it was with my acer laptop. I'm still to new to Linux at the minute to be attempting some of the 'fixes' etc. I'll wait a while longer, or until someone comes up with an 'out of the box' alternative for ...

You're 'spot on'. This forum is great for anyone new to Mint or Linux in general.

Now if somebody could post 'how to' install Elyssa onto an eeepc701 I really would be a happy penguin :D :D :D

Re: rkhunter... how do I view the log?

got it.... I also needed the name of the text editor - gedit. The name of each program is one of the problems I have at the moment, I suppose it will just take time.

By the way it shows two warnings, and two suspicious files

Time to find some help at RKhunter

Re: rkhunter... how do I view the log?

Thanks.... Soory I did'nt make it clear it was really two subjects. I know RKhunter is for rootkits and I have run it in 'terminal' as it instructs, it gave me 4 warnings and listed the log as being in /var/log/RKhunter.log. I've tried opening it with the text editor but it says I do not have permis...

rkhunter... how do I view the log?

Hi, I have downloaded and run RKhunter to check which has produced a 'log' containing several warnings... but I cannot access it if I click on the file. What do I need to do to view this file? Once I've viewed it, any recommendations of where to find out if the warnings are a serious threat? Anyone ...

convert avi back to DVD

I have a disk with 10 avi files on which I need to convert into a format that will play on my daughters 'stand alone' DVD player in her bedroom.

Does anybody know of a program to do this?

The upload button does not work, you have to click on the 'use old uploader' message a couple of inches below the 'choose files'

Found this worked for me

Re: Partitions, are they correct

Thanks Guys, I should have been a little clearer about the XP. I physically remove the drive from the laptop, it is'nt a 'dual boot' set up. The Drive currently fitted is for learning Linux, which is something I got interested in after buying an EEE. I hopefully won't need to go back to XP anytime s...

Re: Partitions, are they correct

Fred,

The XP was on this system ( but a different HDD, which I swap when the need arises ).

Thanks for the reply but, for now, that looks a little too much for me. I'll get a little more experienced with Linux first before heading down that route, it ain't that slow as to stop me making progress.

Re: Partitions, are they correct

I don't know why you extended on just two partitions, but if that's the automatic install, that's cool. In reality, you only need two. One for your system (/) and one for your swap. It looks like it'll be fine. But I don't know why you have 5 Gb for swap. 4 is really the max you need. This is how t...

Partitions, are they correct

I have read the 'considerations before you install' after I have installed :? Now I'm confused by how my partitions have 'automatically' been set, and I have attached two screenshots ( I hope ) looking for some advice on whether this needs amending. If so how does a newbie do it, please keep it simp...
