Re: Linux Mint without desktop environment?

I know this is an older thread , but another WM that I have used on older systems is JWM . I know it looks like old Windows 95, but it can be themed a bit and it is pretty light on resources. "Older"? Sure. So what? This is of personal interest to me, and I view it as a long-standing "feature" that...

All-In-One Printer Recommendation (LM18.3/19.1 MATE)

Subject says it all. I must be one of a handful of retired GNUnix sysadmins who doesn't have a printer/scanner at home. It's as they say: "The shoemaker's children go barefoot". So, something within the last 1-2 model years; don't need high-speed or large duty-cycle; Ethernet connectivity preferred,...

A Hardware WTB/WTS/WTT Forum

It's long overdue. Not all of us buy new stuff; some of us (me!) run 32-bit hardware, and are happy with what we've got. Still, older components have been known to "go South", and the market offerings for new stuff are either incompatible or astronomically-priced. It seems to me that a WTB/WTS/WTT f...

Re: [LM19] Severe Xplayer/VLC/MPV/Smplayer Problems

The fact that it happens in all of those players would point to this probably being in some upstream library. Do you have a link or something to a video that causes this? At least then I could try to get a proper crash report and try to see where it's coming from. Yeah, I know it's an "upstream" is...

[LM19] Severe Xplayer/VLC/MPV/Smplayer Problems

Background: I posted about this during the LM-19 (Beta) process, and again after the release version. To recap, I have encountered in Tara a critical problem with video playback; specifically, with Xplayer, VLC, MPV, and Smplayer. Xplayer (v1.8.3) segfaults: [20726.810941] xplayer[3594]: segfault a...

Apps/Applets: Icon Naming & Location

I don't know if this also applies to Cinnamon and Xfce -- not my concern; I'm only interested in the Mate desktop environment. Icons are located all over the place: Many are in /usr/lib/<app>/icons , more in /usr/share/<theme> , and there's always ~/.icons for "my" artwork; I'm sure there are other ...

Re: MintBox Mini Pro and Airtop Preview

Has there been any discussion about a larger-than-120GB SSD for the MintBox Mini Pro? Yes, I realize that prices for a 256GB SSD are below $200 -- some significantly so -- but it seems wasteful to just "pull and replace" the one supplied... all the moreso, if the buyer knows in advance that 120GB wi...

[SOLVED] Re: How-To Assign Apps to Workspace-Switcher Workspaces

I opted to invoke my wmctrl script (~/.wmstartup) via the System->Preferences->Personal->Startup Applications facility. Yes, it's a very basic script, but it's really all I need. #! /bin/bash sleep 10s # wmctrl -s 0 mate-terminal & sleep 5s # wmctrl -s 3 tomboy & sleep 5s # wmctrl -s 2 thunderbird &...

Re: How-To Assign Apps to Workspace-Switcher Workspaces

I normally don't read the Mate forum but since this, if I understand correctly, is similar but not quite the same as the question Flemur pointed to it did catch my eye. If Mate is like Cinnamon, you could edit the menu so those program launchers point to a batch file (separate one for each) using t...

Re: How-To Assign Apps to Workspace-Switcher Workspaces

Fascinating! All my searches included "MATE" in the argument list, so Cinnamon-oriented threads didn't appear. I'm not averse to scripts, and find "wmctrl" an interesting solution; as I often told my users, "RTFM" OTOH, wmctrl seems more a "workaround", than a "solution". I'm surprised that th...

[SOLVED] How-To Assign Apps to Workspace-Switcher Workspaces

Linux Mint 18.1, MATE 1.16.1, Workspace Switcher 1.16.0 Q: Is it possible to configure my system such that on startup applications open in "assigned" workspaces? For example (L-R, below) , in MATE Panel I have the Workspace Switcher applet set up with #1=Admin (terminal), #2=Web (Firefox), #3=PIM (T...

MATE 1.18 Availability

MATE 1.18 has been released! (and a big "attaboy" to all the MATE developers!!) I read the notice on LWN (Linux Weekly News): https://lwn.net/Articles/717211 And the full story here: http://mate-desktop.org/blog/2017-03-13-mate-1-18-released/ Long story short: What's the (is there a?) timetable for ...

Re: Looking For A Good Apple Theme

I've been using Mac4Lin for several years -- just upgraded from LM 13 to 17.3 (MATE versions) on Sunday -- and Mac4Lin continues to work "as advertised". I use the Avant Window Navigator dock, which no longer works with LM 18 (but LM 17 is a long-term release, so...) -- it's no longer available in U...

Re: [SOLVED] Reinstall LM/11 (Katya) -- No Access to Repos!

The Linux Mint repositories remain in-place, with the final updates present. However, everything from the Ubuntu "Natty" repositories has been moved -- as is Canonical's way -- to "old-releases.ubuntu.com". To access them, replace the entries in /etc/apt/sources.list for "xxx.ubuntu.com" with "old-r...

Re: Reinstall LM/11 (Katya) -- No Access to Repos!

Well, that's the problem, innit? By definition, Linux Mint 11 (Katya) EOL does not mean that repositories "disappear"; quite the opposite: [url=http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2189]Linux Mint 11 Katya reaches end of life[/url] Let me quote from it: "Repositories will remain open but no more updates or ...

[SOLVED] Reinstall LM/11 (Katya) -- No Access to Repos!

I need to reinstall Linux Mint 11 (Katya) on my desktop workstation, but a number of the repositories are no longer available for post-installation updates.

What to do? Note: Upgrading to a more recent version is not an option.

Re: All Linuxmint Desktop Screenshots - March 2013

I'm (still) running Linux Mint 11 (Katya), themed for Mac OS X (using Mac4Lin), on both my Pentium-III workstation and Asus 1005PEB netbook -- Gnome2 rules! I compiled MDM-1.1.5 from source (thanks, Clem!), and use the GDM theme from Mac4Lin; shown below is mdmsetup. http://i1341.removed/albums/o745...

SOLVED: How To Remove the AWN Docklet From The Dock

It's gotta be a "senior moment", but I cannot remember how I removed the AWN "docklet" from the AWN dock. Thus far, I've tried specificying "Display Launchers Only" in the AWN Settings:Task Manager dialog box, but without success. What's funny, is that I don't have this issue on my workstation, only...

Re: Mac4Lin on XFCE

OK; it's almost three years later, and Linux Mint, XFCE, and Mac4Lin have all progressed, each one growing ever-closer to "perfection". The "original" Mac4Lin is outdated -- doesn't seem to be anything happening on the project website, other than reader comments -- the last (v1.0) version was releas...
