Why should anyone install Mint 15?
Hello, I downloaded Mint 15 and it's a charm, it works as I wish. Problem is, it's life spam depends on Ubuntu 13.04 which means on January there will be no more support for it. So what will happen? People will be forced to upgrade to Mint 16, or maybe stay with 15 w/o updates untill Mint 16 comes o...

Is 100GB for /root too much?
I bought a 1TB drive, I'm planning on doing the following partitioning: 320GB for Windows, I use Windows ONLY for games. 111.51GB for root 500GB for /home I plan to install all my programs on Linux, also using VBox and Wine for those that need Windows to run. On the /home side, I download lots of mu...

Re: How to update my Kernel?
* How will that affect on proprietary drivers In one word or less, KABOOM! The package manager should have 3.5.0-25 available, which is ok to install with proprietary drivers. dkms will look after the update to the drivers for you. Of course you must also install the 3.5.0-25 headers. Other than th...

Re: How to update my Kernel?
In my limited understanding, kernel upgrade is really not required and Nvidia official drivers could be updated without a kernel upgrade. Of course they don't. It's just that my system is probably going to get screwed up after a official driver install (regarding those downloaded from geforce.com. ...

How to update my Kernel?
Hello everyone, I'm currently using 3.5.0-17-generic and I'd like to update my Kernel to a newer version, BUT: * How will that affect video drivers I use Mint for gaming on Steam and the required driver for Nvidia is v310.14. Do I need to update the Kernel before or after the driver installation? * ...

Re: Mint vs Ubuntu = Simple Questions
Yes, java and Samba, and the fact that I wish Mint asking me for everysingle thing that happens on my machine. Like for example, mounting another partition or connecting to a new network.passerby wrote:Is there a particular aspect of mint's security you find questionable? It should be just as secure as Ubuntu.

Re: Mint vs Ubuntu = Simple Questions
You can dual boot if you make and mount a separate home partition. eg. sda1 is mint and it mounts sda3 at /home. sda2 is ubuntu and it also mounts sda3 at /home. Can be a little messy if you have different setups of the same programs, but I haven't had any problems with it. You could give MATE a tr...

Samba and it's security
Is there any security issues with samba for a normal user? I use only official repositories and only install official software.
EDIT: Can I just unninstall it by the Software Manager? I saw some people saying commands on /etc/, but if the SM will remove it completelly then it's ok.

Re: Mint vs Ubuntu = Simple Questions
Will the DE say so much about performance? :O BTW I don't like unity, I install Gnome on Ubuntu =) Well, I love both. Both have their pros and cons, now I can't decide! XFCE is great, but Cinnamon is slow and Compiz is limited. Ubuntu is great, but it's XFCE is ugly and not as functional as Mint's. ...

Thanks for your reply, passerby.
I use my computer for gamming now with Steam on the BETA stage, also use it to do my modelings with Blender, edit textures and images with GIMP and Inkscape, and web-surfing. That's the basics.

Mint vs Ubuntu = Simple Questions
Hello everyone. I got simple questions about which suits me better in general. I really like Mint and Ubuntu, and I'm thinking on using one of them or even making a dualboot with Mint 14 XFCE 64bit and Ubuntu 12.04.1 64bit. Anyway I need to know which: - Has the most recent (and stable) software (an...

Google Chrome asking for password
This happens on Mint only. So I installed Chrome and after my login it asked my password. I couldn't wait to ask here so I type it anyway.
Could this be harmful?
Thanks

Re: Why is NVidia drivers so outdated
xegders used to install the latest, but somehow they got back to 304. The error is sort of like " the opengl version is not compatible with your card", but this only happens on Ubuntu based Linux. On openSUSE I have no problem at all with any driver release. The only problem is Steam`s EUL...
