Re: WORKGROUP vs MSHOME

I run my laptop on a corporate IT network that is unfortunately totally MS-centric. I had been running LinuxMint 11 happily for the best part of a year and able to access all smb shares and cifs servers I required access to. Last week I upgraded to Maya, and suddenly I can only access shares within...

Re: How do I disable automount???

I'm afraid none of these options appear to available in mint 14 cinnamon. I managed to change the value of UDISKS_PRESENTATION_NOPOLICY using a udev rule. I've gotten to the point where the file manager doesn't open when I insert a USB stick, but the volume is still being automounted. This is not a...

Re: Brand new to linux - need some help

Im only looking to linux as it a free alternative to purchasing XP or Win7 (which I highly doubt will work on it anyways) and it is more ea...

Re: Mint 14 + Cinnamon - screen dimming and panels disabled

tried checking the power saving options ? Unplugged from the mains laptops normally have a robust power saving profile including screen brightness

menu > system tools > system settings > power

or

menu > system tools > system settings > brightness & lock

Re: install nadia

Hi from another Newbie :) I would go back into XP and make a careful note of all your current partition sizes and types.... ie primary, logical etc sdb, sda sdb1 etc are just labels instead of A,B, C etc You have a partition (50Gb) ready for your install. So.... when it asks where you want to instal...

Re: What are your top tips for a Newbie?

For a Newbie, like myself For the first few weeks: 1. Expect it to go pear shaped (wrong) because it will. You learn quickly ... by breaking it 2. Keep notes (written) of all the things that you do and command line tips that you find that work! It's quicker to get back to your last installation from...

Re: Another win7 and linux mint dual boot thread

If your new, like me, I would go with the straight option of "install alongside" during the install sequence. You can then choose how to "split" the HDD. 50/50 is ok. You can always use GParted to alter the partition size later when your confidence and experience increases. If your more confident us...
