Re: Mint 20 Cinnamon menu icon left home [SOLVED]

Thank you smurfos. I guess it makes sense to idiot-proof it and seal such things in the backend. So, as with all things, a little patience goes a long way. I have tried various methods to drag that menu back to its leftmost position. The clear deskstop icon would always go with it and appear on its ...

Mint 20 Cinnamon menu icon left home [SOLVED]

I upgraded 2 machines from 19.3 to 20. I have something strange that has unhinged on the one. The icons in the bottom tray are out of order. The Menu icon has shifted away from its leftmost "home" position and has migrated / hitchhiked rightwards - currently about the 7th icon, so almost in the midd...

Re: Acer's laptops are always broken...

I've had good success with several HP laptops, Toshiba, Sony Viao, Samsung, Asus, MSI. Though the MSI kicked hard with its UEFI. If you want to stick the word "broken" on a brand: Gigabyte. Big steaming pile of brown stuff. I had an expensive model crash and burn after just 18 months (hardware / fir...

Add-Ons .. Ctrl-Shift-A

at the very top I see: Find more add-ons [____________]

Hope that helps. There must be a search field somewhere on the AddOns page, you may need to {pun} search for it. :)

Re: imagemagick vs graphicsmagick (rant) self-[SOLVED]

I just added GM to my system, which made production work. Removing IM would break dozens of scripts or take work offline for days to do tweaks rewrites and testing. The computer, OS and software are tools. Broken ones get replaced. This was a quick fix to get a job out the door, shared to: (i) get i...

Re: Upgrade from 19.3 to 20

A lot of this is driven from upstream with Debian, Ubuntu cleaning out applications in their repositories. An example, PhotoPrint which was last worked on in 2010, so abandonware.

Re: downloading you tube videos

Go to the three-bars icon at the right corner in FireFox Click on that and select Add-Ons. Within there you can search for "video dowload" and those two should come up. Do be careful as all add-ons are not created equal. For example there are several fake/poor copies of the good Ad-Blockers. Same wi...

imagemagick vs graphicsmagick (rant) self-[SOLVED]

Pre-warning - a bit of a vent-the-rage rant post For several years I have enjoyed the powerhouse hidden in the ImageMagick suite. I have used it heavily, built script empires around it for photo processing, etc. Love it. BUT... Over the last couple of years, it started complaining. At first little p...

Re: Why does Linux Mint include Timeshift when the main developer doesn't have the time to maintain it?

I toyed with TimeShift for about a year. At this stage it has been removed and purged from all my systems.

If you are using FireFox, there are a couple of good add-ons which work most of the time.
Video DownloaderHelper (and the add-on application)
Easy Youtube Video Downloader Express

Re: Need to delete a hidden system file in Win 7 from Mint

I don't work much with Windows in the past 12 years, but it sounds like you might have to use the Mint as a rescue. Copy her data files off to an external drive - something I recommend you do anyway, just in case. Once you mount the Win drive from Linux, everything is pretty much wide open for you t...

Re: [SOLVED] LM19.1 boot loop on i7-6700hq

Well, I'm going to call it solved, though the LM19.1 installer is still running at the other end of my desk. I found that using the very latest SwagArch, the updater problem went away and I could then find and install 'rEFInd'. It reported I was in Legacy Mode and 'did nothing'. On a hunch, I enable...

Re: LM19.1 boot loop on i7-6700hq

Thank you for pointing me to rodsbooks. It is wonderful how for almost every problem, some genius has already developed some magic software. It is a matter of someone pointing the way. :) I will certainly give this a try. I was ready to break the piggy bank and get a non-Intel machine (Acer Nitro wi...

[SOLVED] LM19.1 boot loop on i7-6700hq

I have been upgrading the household's laptops to 19.1 and finally got to my "main rig", a Gigabyte P17R5 which has an i7-6700hq, nvidia geforce gtx950m, 16gb ram, 128gb SSD and 2TB HDD - a HIGH end machine. It was a treat to myself 2 years ago for Christmas, something brand new to replace my line of...

Re: Wi-fi loves home, hates to travel

Thanks for the input. This happened over the Easter holiday and had me worried. Things have settled a bit and some projects are out of the way, so I am going to set aside a day to wander around the Library and a few wi-fi spots with 2 laptops and see what happens.

Wi-fi loves home, hates to travel

This problem is common to 4 laptops (running LM 18.3), all differing hardware and generations, etc. All the machines are 100% happy when accessing wi-fi at home. Yet when we go to friends, the adventures begin. Sometimes you will see only old connections, no new ones - turning wi-fi off and on again...

Re: Brand new laptop fights LM 18.1 and freezes [SOLVED]

[SOLVED] I maybe went the long road, but got there and that is what counts. :) LM 18.1 kept being unhappy, so as i wrote in the last update, I tried LM 18. I ensured to format partitions to remove any cobwebs that might break things { read: I installed Ok but some Trisquel hangovers remained on disk...

Re: Brand new laptop fights LM 18.1 and freezes

Update - trying the 'nomodeset' and some other options. Ubuntu MATE succeeded, using 'nomodeset'. Mint 18.1 got a bit further, getting stuck at the text mode "login:" .. all in yellow instead of gray. If I recall at that point pressing Ctrl-Alt-Backspace or Ctrl-Alt-Esc then got it to a black screen...

Brand new laptop fights LM 18.1 and freezes [SOLVED]

My first new hardware purchase in a decade or more (I usually buy used machines 3-5 years old). Modern, high-end "gaming" laptop - a Gigabyte P17. Came pre-installed of course with Virus-10. It took me several rounds to remove the UEFI blast doors and a couple of attempts to finally install LM 18.1 ...

Prisma equivalent as GiMP plugin... anyone?

This is so cool. I really hope some talented folks in the Linux/GiMP space can make something like this as a GiMP plugin.

Sooner rather than never please. I still miss my Topaz "curly" effect and proper Fractalius from PS/Win. :(
