Re: Brand new laptop fights LM 18.1 and freezes [SOLVED]

[SOLVED] I maybe went the long road, but got there and that is what counts. :) LM 18.1 kept being unhappy, so as i wrote in the last update, I tried LM 18. I ensured to format partitions to remove any cobwebs that might break things { read: I installed Ok but some Trisquel hangovers remained on disk...

Re: Brand new laptop fights LM 18.1 and freezes

Update - trying the 'nomodeset' and some other options. Ubuntu MATE succeeded, using 'nomodeset'. Mint 18.1 got a bit further, getting stuck at the text mode "login:" .. all in yellow instead of gray. If I recall at that point pressing Ctrl-Alt-Backspace or Ctrl-Alt-Esc then got it to a bl...

Brand new laptop fights LM 18.1 and freezes [SOLVED]

My first new hardware purchase in a decade or more (I usually buy used machines 3-5 years old). Modern, high-end "gaming" laptop - a Gigabyte P17. Came pre-installed of course with Virus-10. It took me several rounds to remove the UEFI blast doors and a couple of attempts to finally instal...

Prisma equivalent as GiMP plugin... anyone?

This is so cool. I really hope some talented folks in the Linux/GiMP space can make something like this as a GiMP plugin. http://www.boredpanda.com/prisma-app-turn-photos-into-paintings/ Sooner rather than never please. I still miss my Topaz "curly" effect and proper Fractalius from PS/Win...

[SOLVED] converting AutoCAD to FreeCAD or other

A retired engineer/inventor I know has all his drawings in AutoCAD, coming from a Windows background of many years. In switching to Linux and a new shiny 64-bit desktop, it seems the best fit he has found is FreeCAD. Other than awkwardly working around with dual-boot, I ask the forum two questions: ...

Re: Nemo 2.8.6 in LM 17.3 - preferences

Hmm, nope. How does one add 'Extensions' and stuff to Nemo's Plugins, or are these repository download/installs? I see 'compress' and 'extract' as options on the fresh install, but not on the older upgraded machine - but there I see 'compare later'... 'dropbox', dropped and is gone overnight (I neve...

Re: Nemo 2.8.6 in LM 17.3 - preferences

:) Thanks Cosmo, I logged in this morning to post that I had figured out the magic '+'. You have to really slow down and get on target so you don't get the default Open action. So 1/2 solved, hence [S__V_D]. :) Still no Meld entry in the list though. Meld (compare, compare later) and Dropbox are opt...

Nemo 2.8.6 in LM 17.3 - preferences [S__V_D]

Has something weird happened with Nemo 2.8.6? Upgrading to LM 17.3, I find that machines where I had already configured "show all menu options" and had Meld running and integrated - they keep that functionality. BUT, machines where that was not set up before the upgrade - on those I cannot...

Re: gThumb - rotate image resizes

Yup, fight gThumb ... because (and here is the reason) ... it already does 99.990% of what I want and I found this one little bug that "someone else" upon this forum fair may have seen too. In which case gThumb devs may want to know (horror of bug submit experience), yeah even maybe fix it...

installer slideshow as "shop demo" mode? [SOLVED]

This (week/month)'s Silly Question from myself: is there a way to set up the slideshow from the installer as a kind of shop demo display that just loops all day? Or can someone point me to an already existing (similar theme) slideshow on Linux Mint that can be used this way? I want to set up an old ...

gThumb - rotate image resizes [SOLVED]

I am using gThumb as my viewer and Irfanview substitute. I bumped into a problem though with >> rotate left or right 90 It rotates the image, but the resolution resampled down to about 25% of the original. I discovered this with some photos someone gave me. Rotate, save, rotate, save - hey!!! Fortun...

Re: Another South African joins the forums....

Welcome to the best Linux distro, Mint. :)
Left SA in '98 (Pta), did "penance" in USA, now in NZ. No place on earth is perfect or problem free, though the planet is blissfully unaware of how bad SA has become since 1994.
Where in SA are you?

Betsy - 2nd install - some observations

I had one of my laptops recently devolve into a quagmire of distro tests, which all just proved that Linux Mint stands literally towering over other distros in terms of install, operations, and every aspect you can think of. So what better to do with a nice i7 laptop than clean it right up and make ...

Final solution - feels like Windows 95 again. [SOLVED by RE-INSTALL] I had some hours spare to revisit the problem laptop and account. By now even DVDs would not play from my daughter's account, but everything would work just fine from my account. I opened Nemo as root, made a backup of her home fol...

Re: oddity with password change

Let me try to describe the problem another way. I changed my only "admin" level user account's password on both machines. Regular edition Mint, Cinnamon 17.1 "Rebecca": 1. login - new password 2. Update Manager - new password 3. Synaptic Package Manager - new password 4. Software...
