Re: Upgrade to Cinnamon 20.3 causes Cinnamon crashes at random
In another week of more intense testing, I have managed to crash several desktops on the Asus ROG other than Cinnamon. Today I found this: https://gist.github.com/diracs-delta/876d74d030f80dc899fc58a244b72df0 which goes quite radical to eliminate all sleep states. I think adjusting your desktop syst...

Re: How to obtain user pic on login-screen?
Take the image you want to use, ensure it is a square and 256x256 pixels in size, save it as a .PNG file. Copy this .PNG to your $HOME folder. Now rename it to " .face ". It might "vanish" from view as it has become a "hidden file", but if you enable viewing hidden file...

Re: Upgrade to Cinnamon 20.3 causes Cinnamon crashes at random
Welcome to Ryzen and Linux. I also got myself a high-end Ryzen7 (also an Asus ROG Strix!!!) and have had a year of random blackouts, sudden restarts, just plain dead when you turn around ... all random, nothing in any logfile. After much searching and trying various "solutions" I did event...

Re: [SOLVED] mintdrivers and mintsystem out of sync
Solved, by the amazing Mint Update process. After a couple of days I heard back again. After running updates, only once "The Shield" lit up,.. it seems to have solved itself. Mintsystem went to 2.5.2 which was Ok for the Mintdrivers to be happy with. For a few hours there I had visions of ...

[SOLVED] mintdrivers and mintsystem out of sync
I have a remote-support family member who is still on Mint 19.x. Any further upgrade will take me a 14 hour plane trip and zero covid in the world - yeah... fun times. After months of "please apply updates", they did this and it mostly worked. There is a complaint from the system about a b...

Re: Mint 20 Cinnamon menu icon left home [SOLVED]
Thank you smurfos. I guess it makes sense to idiot-proof it and seal such things in the backend. So, as with all things, a little patience goes a long way. I have tried various methods to drag that menu back to its leftmost position. The clear deskstop icon would always go with it and appear on its ...

Mint 20 Cinnamon menu icon left home [SOLVED]
I upgraded 2 machines from 19.3 to 20. I have something strange that has unhinged on the one. The icons in the bottom tray are out of order. The Menu icon has shifted away from its leftmost "home" position and has migrated / hitchhiked rightwards - currently about the 7th icon, so almost i...

Re: Acer's laptops are always broken...
I've had good success with several HP laptops, Toshiba, Sony Viao, Samsung, Asus, MSI. Though the MSI kicked hard with its UEFI. If you want to stick the word "broken" on a brand: Gigabyte. Big steaming pile of brown stuff. I had an expensive model crash and burn after just 18 months (hard...

Re: imagemagick vs graphicsmagick (rant) self-[SOLVED]
I just added GM to my system, which made production work. Removing IM would break dozens of scripts or take work offline for days to do tweaks rewrites and testing. The computer, OS and software are tools. Broken ones get replaced. This was a quick fix to get a job out the door, shared to: (i) get i...

A lot of this is driven from upstream with Debian, Ubuntu cleaning out applications in their repositories. An example, PhotoPrint which was last worked on in 2010, so abandonware.

Re: downloading you tube videos
Go to the three-bars icon at the right corner in FireFox Click on that and select Add-Ons. Within there you can search for "video dowload" and those two should come up. Do be careful as all add-ons are not created equal. For example there are several fake/poor copies of the good Ad-Blocker...

imagemagick vs graphicsmagick (rant) self-[SOLVED]
Pre-warning - a bit of a vent-the-rage rant post For several years I have enjoyed the powerhouse hidden in the ImageMagick suite. I have used it heavily, built script empires around it for photo processing, etc. Love it. BUT... Over the last couple of years, it started complaining. At first little p...

I toyed with TimeShift for about a year. At this stage it has been removed and purged from all my systems.

Re: Need to delete a hidden system file in Win 7 from Mint
I don't work much with Windows in the past 12 years, but it sounds like you might have to use the Mint as a rescue. Copy her data files off to an external drive - something I recommend you do anyway, just in case. Once you mount the Win drive from Linux, everything is pretty much wide open for you t...

Re: [SOLVED] LM19.1 boot loop on i7-6700hq
Well, I'm going to call it solved, though the LM19.1 installer is still running at the other end of my desk. I found that using the very latest SwagArch, the updater problem went away and I could then find and install 'rEFInd'. It reported I was in Legacy Mode and 'did nothing'. On a hunch, I enable...

Thank you for pointing me to rodsbooks. It is wonderful how for almost every problem, some genius has already developed some magic software. [SOLVED] LM19.1 boot loop on i7-6700hq
I have been upgrading the household's laptops to 19.1 and finally got to my "main rig", a Gigabyte P17R5 which has an i7-6700hq, nvidia geforce gtx950m, 16gb ram, 128gb SSD and 2TB HDD - a HIGH end machine. It was a treat to myself 2 years ago for Christmas, something brand new to replace ...

Re: Wi-fi loves home, hates to travel
Thanks for the input. This happened over the Easter holiday and had me worried. Things have settled a bit and some projects are out of the way, so I am going to set aside a day to wander around the Library and a few wi-fi spots with 2 laptops and see what happens.
