Re: Linux Mint 17 RC

JAVA/runtime is another question,-- i've seen reports recently indicating it is once again a preferred attack vector. For most people, there is absolutely no reason to keep a Java plugin active in the browser. Pretty much the only case where you might need it is if you work for a company that expec...

Re: Turn your keyboard into a music instrument on Linux Mint

Or alternatively, you could get the latest version of LMMS (currently available in KXStudio PPA, the Ubuntu 14.04 repository version is sadly still broken), which allows you to play various native software synths, as well as Windows VST plugins via WINE, using either your computer keyboard or a MIDI...

The cheapest wacom tablets are around $50, so maybe we could ask all mint-using artists to chip in to buy the developers a tablet to play with ;)

Re: Ubuntu wants to start charging for use of repros by Mint

this is non-news and you need not read much into this as it isn't a "big" thing. I disagree. I think it is a big thing, it's Canonical attempting to place limitations to free software, which goes against the spirit of free software, and against the GPL license. It may not be a big thing for Linux M...

Re: Ubuntu wants to start charging for use of repros by Mint

I think everyone in this thread is missing the point. It's not about the cost, like Clem said, it was easily negotiated away, and in any case Canonical can charge for the use of their servers if they want... This is the actually objectionable part: "Money isn't a primary concern. Although the origin...

Re: Add Wacom Tablet for Cinnamon 2.0

I talked about this with Clem in IRC back before 2.0 was released. I was asking if they would consider porting the Gnome wacom app to Cinnamon, they seemed reluctant to do this however. Apparently the issue with that was that "they don't want configuration apps for branded products", so the problem ...

Re: Sigh.. just why do you do this Mint team

Why are you using closed drivers on AMD anyway? If you have some special reason, that's fine, but supposedly the open driver performs pretty much just as well now on the AMD side, if not better in some cases.

Re: Reflecting on Open Source and Commercial Softwares

I've been into Linux now for a bit more than a year. I certainly won't ever relapse into commercial software. But Linux is commercial software. Vast amounts of Linux development (both in the kernel and userland) are done and/or paid for by companies with commercial interests. Red Hat, Intel, Google...

Re: LINUX BACK TO WINDOWS???

Most software can be installed from the package manager. However if you want to install software not included in the repositories, you can't use the Software Manager (which is Mint's frontend for the package manager), it means you have to install it manually. The site where you download the software...

Re: Wayland doubt

I think it's starting to look like it's going to be harder and harder to seriously base a distro on Ubuntu in the future. I know Clem says he thinks it's fine to base on it, but... with Ubuntu going Mir, if Mint wants to use X or Wayland instead, it's likely to present a whole new batch of problems....

I've been so hard on Brahim recently so I'll try to bring in some positive feedback this time, to concentrate on the parts of his/her suggestions that I think have merit. 1- Nemo integrates Disks + Disk Usage analyzer + Sys. info: This is not a terrible idea as such. I personally like the idea of a ...
