Re: The unofficial LMDE Xfce UP6 SR1

@widget I started using the launchers in the panel but quickly got tired of having to build them with each fresh install and noticed that xfce unlike the other desktops allowed you to have more than one menu so I ended up creating my own nearly 2 years ago and I've been using them ever since, a per...

Re: What you use Linux for?

I wuz on an Windows oriented forum and some ppl were ranting about the fact Windows 8 doesn't include no DvD player no more, nor software for burning new optical media. :O Mind you they are obsolescent I suppose... none the less, I posted about some of the facilities that Linux offers straight out o...

Re: What you use Linux for?

I'm also currently learning python, C++ and java. And I find development to be a much cleaner experience in linux with my chosen open source apps than the ones I used in windows. I've only explored the command line development tools on Linux and I prefer them to visual tools because I don't have to...

Re: What you use Linux for?

I first installed Linux about 13 years ago. Why? Because I'd built a desktop and windows would terminally bluescreen every two days without fail, meaning a full, and very painful, reinstall. I can empathize with that. My PC was fine until it got a virus and then I had to format the drive and reinst...

Re: The unofficial LMDE Xfce UP6 SR1

The crash is a GTK message and that made me think: what if it's caused by the oxygen theme. So, I changed it to Clearlooks and hey presto: no crashes! Just experiment with the themes you like until it works. Confirmed... one more problem solved. Thank you :) I will now try to uninstall any themes t...

Re: The unofficial LMDE Xfce UP6 SR1

1. I see if I can do something about that when I have the time. 2. What tool are you talking about and what did you already try to solve it? You are very proactive and positive support :) The tool I used can be installed with sudo apt-get install glade then in a new file from the selection of 'TopL...

Well don't you think dee was derailing (repeatedly) ?
I have written a professional real time kernel anyway, and it was used for over a decade in industrial applications.

Re: Linux: The Good the Bad and the down right Ugly!

Next well what's with all these frikken kernel updates? What does a kernel do?

Process management
Memory management
Device management
There is NO NEED to change this code as often as they do. These arewell established algorithms that were created years and years ago. IDK wha...

Re: The unofficial LMDE Xfce UP6 SR1

Yes I tried this and it' really quite nice but ultimately I have two problems with it:
1. No matter what I do I cannot disable the screen saver.
2. A tool I need crashes with segmentation fault but it works just fine on the main stream Mint.

I was interested in Linux simply because I want to develop open source software.

Re: Linux: The Good the Bad and the down right Ugly!

Well after grub comes the login and Windows is every bit as guilty as Linux on this... look... this is a PERSONAL computer right? It sits in MY living room in MY house. It only has MY files on it. I don't employ a team of network administrators who will administrate what I can and cannot access. I d...

Re: Linux: The Good the Bad and the down right Ugly!

bloatware Yes... let us start with the boot process... good old grub-pc or whatever it's called these days. Well I have a gaggle of disk drives and each one has it's own independent self sufficient OS on it such that if my computer packs up, I can take a drive out and bolt it in another machine (as...

Linux: The Good the Bad and the down right Ugly!

Right that does it! This thread because some people keep derailing a different thread of mine by telling me what I should or should not want from my Linux... So here the idea is that we get to say what we think is good, and also what we don't like about it and that doesn't necessarily mean that we t...

It's only a problem if you don't understand their purpose. No, the real problem is that some people - mentioning no names here ;) don't even understand that it is a problem  Look I'll go make special thread to discuss it cuz this is derailing the intent of this thread OK :| right so... the t...

Re: What you use Linux for?

But the rest of the stuff you propose are kind of... pointless. IMO what is pointless is retaining the full functionality of a very complicated design that was intended for multi user mainframes and not for modern small self sufficient devices. Take for instance the X11 window system... it's based ...

Re: GNU is Not Unix

An important consideration in using GNU is that it is free and open source... One thing about open source is the idea that if you want to see how something works, or to change a feature, you can and even eventually contribute enhancements as a developer. Thus I put it to the test and was having a l...

Re: Is there a Good DEBIAN BASED DISTRO?

I'm not sure if I understand you... LMDE is a distribution based (somewhat loosely) off of Debian's Testing branch. MATE is a desktop environment which will run on Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, openSUSE, Arch, Sabayon, and lots of other distributions. So if you use MATE on LMDE or Debian, then you are st...

GNU is Not Unix

One thing I use Linux for is software development and of course GNU from the free software foundation plays a major part in this. I recently learnt that GNU stands for 'GNU is Not Unix' and that the Gnu/Linux combination is because the Free Software Foundation's Hurd kernel is not quite ready yet......

Re: What you use Linux for?

Most personal computers in the home... on the lap and in the hand are just that: personal and they have no 'system administrators' in the house. That doesn't mean that people shouldn't care about the security of their computers. Also, sometimes people need to share their devices with other people. ...
