Re: Atheros AR9285 Only Getting 2-3 Bars

You don't have to wait for a new kernel, you just need to use the latest compat-wireless build of the ath9k driver and everything will be fine.

Re: ATI 3650 Radeon AGP

It's easy to tell if you have the latest graphics driver installed. Since you installed using the Linux Mint restricted drivers pop-up I can almost guarantee that you don't have the latest. All you have to do is this: Open ATI Catalyst Control Center - should be located under Menu >> Preferences Aft...

Re: Why do most Distros have Gnome as default ?

I don't think that is necessarily true. If I look at the present top 10 on distrowatch I find Ubuntu - Gnome Fedora - Gnome Mint - Gnome OpenSuse - both Mandriva - KDE Debian - Gnome Sabayon - KDE Puppy - N/A Arch - KDE PClinux - KDE Slackware - KDE Not a big deal, but just so you know Gnome has be...

Re: Why is Linux a bit slower than windows

I always figured it was a driver issue. In my experience I agree with you in that windows is MUCH faster with newer hardware since Linux drivers just aren't as good, but Linux is faster with older hardware due to the bloat of Windows. Just my opinion.

Re: Your Top Distributions

Right now I'm using Mint 8 64 bit (never thought I'd go back to Mint but windows file sharing works better than in any other distro I've tried). But for all time: Mint 8 64 - Really top notch job with this one team. Sabayon 4.2 - No other distro gives you better out of the box functionality plus the...

Re: Compat-Wireless with Helena?

Well I don't know if this will help, but I am running the current version of compat in Mint 8 with an Atheros card. The steps I followed were: 1. Be sure that you have linux headers installed. 2. cd compat-wireless-2010-01-06 3. ./scripts/driver-select ath9k 4. make 5. sudo make install 6. sudo make...

Re: Anyone tried XMBC MEDIA CENTER ...

XBMC is pretty awesome in Sabayon. I didn't use it much though since lighter weight players are more my speed.

I agree with Clem

I read Clem's comments in this article: http://blog.ibeentoubuntu.com/2009/07/mythbuntu-and-mint-developers-pans.html and I have to say I absolutely agree. I am very grateful for Mint getting me started in Linux but the point raised in this article is a huge reason why I switched to Sabayon instead....

Re: Epson Printers, All In Ones, etc...check here!!!

I saw that the previous post talks about the CX8400. I just wanted to say that I had sooooo much trouble trying to get my CX8400 to work in Elyssa with no luck. But in Felicia it works perfectly right out of the gate. The Cups people are doing a great job keeping the database pretty up to date.

Re: New Linux Broadcom driver (how to get it)?

So i've downloaded the source from Broadcom's site and I've been going through the readme file but i'm stuck. Here's what the instructions say: After untar'ing you should have a src and lib sub directory plus a Linux 2.6 "kbuild" external makefile (Makefile). The lib sub directory has the pre-built ...

Re: Mint 5 is slow compared to XP on same hardware

I'm curious to know what you mean when you say faster. My experience with comparing XP to Linux Mint is that my wireless speeds are exponentially faster in Linux Mint, and my system responsiveness is also faster when dealing with many open applications as I usually do. I think that boot-up time is a...

Linux Programming Recommendations

So I went to a computer science school and gained a lot of programming skills. Fortunately I got a job as a business analyst for a software company so I don't have to be a professional coder. But I would like to pick it back up in my free time and help out Linux Mint with more than just money. So I'...

New Linux Broadcom driver (how to get it)?

I installed the current beta version of Intrepid Ibex on a small partition of my laptop. There is a new B43 Broadcom wireless driver available in Ibex. I've heard a lot of people say it doesn't work very well but it worked flawlessly with my 4328 chipset, and the Linux driver is light years faster t...

Re: mozilla and their trademark policy

I think removing Firefox from the distribution altogether simply for wanting to enforce their trademark is a little past extreme. I did however find Mr. Shuttleworth's comments from the first link very insightful. He basically said we should try to reasonably state our case to Mozilla for not wantin...

It's not even in Intrepid yet. They're still doing bug tests on it and once that's done it should be backported. If you are inpatient you could get them from here. deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/c-korn/ubuntu hardy main deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/c-korn/ubuntu hardy main But the newer version r...

I got that, but I was just wondering why the newest version isn't in the repos. VLC's site says as long as you're looking in multiverse you should be able to get the newer version. What am I missing?

There is a new version of VLC available, and VLC's site says it's available in the multiverse repository. Muliverse is enabled, but I can't upgrade. How come?
