No. Mint is based on Ubuntu. Ubuntu is based on Debian. "Plain old debian" is debian and is here: http://www.debian.org

Re: system freezes when running software manager

bb333, I just provided the solution. No further investigation needed; the Software Manager already has an option to prevent this problem for slow typers and slow computers. Not a solution. Software manager becomes completely unresponsive if you do a search for one letter. Search for "b" a...

Re: system freezes when running software manager

I hope someone can post some insightful info on this topic. Lots of problems out there, but I haven't read one single posible answer yet. I can get the window to freeze but the system remains fine. Reproduce: ⋅ Start software manager. ⋅ Do a search for one letter like "b&qu...

Re: Question on how Linux Mint partitions hard drives

$ sudo os-prober Should list windows. On first input it asked for a [sudo] password for username. I gave it the password I set for login. It seemed fine with it. On second input nothing happened, it just sends me to a new command line. Timeout may be set to zero. Change it: $ sudo pluma /etc/defaul...

Re: I added CALIBRE to my MINT14XFCE n problems happened

Bad idea to run random python scripts. Worse to give it root (sudo). It looks like it didn't install anything. From a terminal window $ sudo apt-get install calibre or Find the application synaptic and install from there. or Find the Software manager in the control panel and install from there.

Re: Is there a "roll back" snapshot function in Mint14, Mate

This would be nice for me too. Last 2 years, I've experimenting with Linux, maybe 10 hrs/wk - mostly different versions of Mint & Ubuntu with different DE..Unity, Mate, Cinnamon, etc.. I must have re-installed at least 10 times when trying something new (edit grub or config files, personalize p...

Re: Question on how Linux Mint partitions hard drives

Hmmm, I'm seeing differing views on this--should swap space nowadays be the same size or twice the size of the RAM? I'm a desktop user, and I like to game and have multiple programs running at once, so I'm inclined to think the double, especially when I have HD to spare. For me, double the RAM is o...

Re: Question on how Linux Mint partitions hard drives

Best advise! Hardly. Maybe you should read what the OP actually wrote. For example, "I just made its partition the entire hard drive", which means there is no "unpartitioned and unformated [sic] free space." HTH Maybe both of you should read and not thread crap: On Disk 0 I now ...

Re: Question on how Linux Mint partitions hard drives

Do not touch the recovery partition (if there) at the end of your drive. That will allow you to restore windows. That won't help the poster if it kills his dearly beloved data, will it? He should do a backup. Furthermore, defragging the drive under Windows is pointless or useless or both. Most defr...

Re: Question on how Linux Mint partitions hard drives

No, you have to resize that windows partition manually. ⋅ Defragment your hard drive in windows. ⋅ Boot livecd/liveusb and run gparted http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-gparted-to-resize-your-windows-vista-partition/ ⋅ Resize windows drive to whatever s...

Re: two quick questions

Q1) Before Mint install, I used an Ubuntu live CD to copy my home directory to a new partition on the root drive. When installing Mint, I took the gear path and set the installer to not reformat that partition, use ext4 as it was, and that the partition was /home. However, my previous naming must h...

Install debian in there. Dual boot when you get comfortable as there is way less hand holding in Debian, especially if you are jumping in with a netinst.

[Now for fun with proprietary wireless drivers Yes, thank you, I found those, but with no internet access when I am in Linux, how would I download the needed driver? Would Linux Mint(Cinnamon) have a better battery life than Ubuntu(Unity) ? I already have Ubuntu on my noteboook and I use the Bumblebee project to improve battery life time (altough it is still 2h less than on Windows) . Also, are there different drivers for components on Mint than on Ubuntu? I wo...

Re: cinnamon on aspire one 751H

Intel GMA 500 graphics chipset = no linux video driver ever. What you have is all you can get.

For the future, avoid anything intel atom branded. If you noticed, the chip can't even do 64bit.
