[SOLVED] Cinnamon Screensaver

I'm using LM Cinnamon 18.1 and so far I like it; smooth graphics, a bit faster than 18 and I like the option of four panels. The only issue I'm having so far is not being able to "kill" the Cinnamon screensaver so it stays dead. I have it set in "Startup Applications" so that the...

Re: LM 18 (Cinnamon) and .dconf

Not quite sure what you're asking but the last time this problem occurred (about a week ago) I did create another account to see if the problem persisted and it didn't. The new account worked just like it was supposed to. This was done after the settings "lockup" occurred the second time a...

Re: LM 18 (Cinnamon) and .dconf

sudo no, gksudo yes but rarely and it was used exclusively for Nemo for minor tasks. I have setup being able to log in as root but have never used this to date.

Re: LM 18 (Cinnamon) and .dconf

One hundred percent positive. I know the /.cache/dconf reverts to root ownership constantly but it doesn't interfere with changing the settings whereas /.config/dconf does but as I explained earlier, it's only done it a couple of times. I wish I could tell you what I was doing when it changed but th...

Re: LM 18 (Cinnamon) and .dconf

I always use gksudo w/o fail and because of the infrequency of when it occurs it may very well be a bug. Can't tell you what I was doing when it occurred though. Yes I back up religiously (on a portable HD and a memory stick w/ Lucky Backup) and in fact I was doing a comparison of the files when I d...

LM 18 (Cinnamon) and .dconf

A couple of times over the last month or so it has been impossible to change the theme colors, icon style, cursors, etc. I finally narrowed it down to the *user*/.config/dconf file. For whatever reason, this file reverts to root access which makes it impossible to make the changes I mentioned. Manua...

Re: Email checker

phd21 and kyphi, I appreciate your replies but neither will help. I'm not looking for a spam filter per se as this requires the mail to be downloaded and run through the filter. I also don't want to have to purchase Crossover as I gave up Windows several years ago, one huge reason was because of the...

Email checker

Way back in the day, there was a KDE 3 application called Korn. It was basically the Linux version of a Windows program called "Mailwasher". You could check the headers and body of an email while it was still on the server and delete it (them) before downloading the remaining mail. I've lo...

Re: Why two screensaver apps?

OK, I got into the Cinnamon SS and started messing with the controls and finally figured out what I should have been doing. First off, I explained it wrong when I said the screensaver started immediately; it started after a minute (what I set it to do while testing) so I could see what the SS looked...

Why two screensaver apps?

Been a long time since I posted on this board; have always had pretty good success in finding the answers I need from other posts. I've been a long time KDE user (started with SuSE about 13 years ago and have been using LM KDE for the last 4 or 5 years) but I wanted to give LM Cinnamon a look and I ...

Re: Windows backup and Virtualbox

Thanks for the info! I guess at this point I'll try "booting" from the rescue disc in VB and see if I'm able to install the mirror from there. If it doesn't work, clean install. One thing (among many) I'll never miss about Windows is the reinstallation/configuration of programs.

Re: Windows backup and Virtualbox

Sorry for the confusion...it is a mirror image of the last time I ran Windows 7 three years ago. I have a Windows "Rescue Disc (DVD)" I created at the time I made the image. In the past (before using Linux full time), I would make an image of my Windows configuration on an external HDD and...

Windows backup and Virtualbox

Just a quick question about installing Windows via Virtualbox. I have a mirror image of the last time I used Windows 7 (from 3 years ago) on an external HDD and was wondering if this can be installed by way of Virtualbox. I'd like to be able to run the Windows Rescue Disk (DVD) and then install my b...

Re: Is switching from Cinnamon to KDE worth it?

The only way to answer your main question (Is it worth it) is to install and try it. I have Cinnamon 17.1 on an old laptop and it works fine for that but my desktop is KDE all the way. I've tried Cinnamon (several times) on my desktop and have found it to be a little "laggy" when it comes ...

Re: KDE and the Greatness of the Search & Launch Layout

Glad you mentioned that...yes, you do need to have the KDE netbook installed for it to work. Didn't realize this when I first started using it some time ago and when I did a reinstall, no Search and Launch! Pulled my hair out till I found the reason why!

Re: KDE and the Greatness of the Search & Launch Layout

I've been using Search & Launch for several years; couldn't get along without it. As for the top panel being non-adjustable, an easy workaround is to set up a regular panel and anchor it to the top of the screen and have it auto hide. On the S & L panel I have 10 programs I use frequently on...

Re: Cinnamon Version

Thanks for the replies/help. As it turns out, I unknowingly DID have 2.4 installed but didn't know it at the time. When I installed the stable version of 17.1 (from the final ISO), it was done on a clean machine with nothing else installed. So it would appear 2.4 still has a bit of a lag problem the...

Cinnamon Version

Looked around but couldn't find the answer to this. I've always been a die-hard KDE user but I like experimenting with other desktops as well. I'm a little confused as to what version Cinnamon is at in 17.1. In the description on the Linuxmint site it says it's at 2.4. When I check the repositories ...

Re: Difference between Chrome and Chromium...

Thanks for the info...I was kinda leaning towards that but didn't know for sure. I have noticed Chrome is a little snappier/quicker than its counterpart and may just continue to use it instead of Chromium as an alternate browser (my main browser is Firefox).
