Re: How To Upgrade Freshly Installed Linux Mint Cinnamon 15>

This was written by Clem, the creator of Mint: http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/2 The Cons of upgrading your mint system like you have (the package method) include "Unreliable", "Risky" and "Complicated" as seen in that article. The black screen you have will be due to issues...

Re: Mir or Wayland in Mint

Xorg forever, no intel deveoped or unity optimized mobile device focussing display servers which aim at killing linux on the desktop will be used on my systems, even if I have to abandon linux H. X is really really dated and there good things in Wayland and Mir to help the linux community as a whol...

Re: Linux Mint 16 "Petra" Cinnamon RC released!

It seems to be confusion over methods. Here is Clem's response. http://segfault.linuxmint.com/2013/11/answering-controversy-stability-vs-security-is-something-you-configure/ Yep. Exactly this. Although I was less kind, and thus I think I had my post removed because I called the offending Ubuntu dev...

Linux Mint 16 "Petra" Cinnamon RC released!

There is an article out by a Ubuntu Developers, who say that Linux Mint Is a Vulnerable System. Is this true? By the way the new release is great. http://news.softpedia.com/news/Ubuntu-Developers-Say-that-Linux-Mint-Is-a-Vulnerable-System-401007.shtml?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter They'...

Re: New PC hardware compatibility

Everything is subjective of course, but one thing I can promise is that you'll be needing a very recent kernel for the Haswell-based Core i5. My partner has an Acer with an Ivy Bridge i5 that hangs up after a few minutes run time when you boot it with the LMDE install image (which ships with a 3.2.x...

Re: Cinnamon 2 Laggy

Running Cinnamon 2 on an Intel 965M chipset using Xorg open source drivers. Five year old laptop, no lag here. I suspect there are hang-ups with the Nvidia driver and how the DE talks to it. I used to own a Lenovo ThinkPad with Nvidia card, and KDE would run super-smooth, but everything else would b...

Re: Linux Mint 16 "Petra" Cinnamon RC released!

Just ran a fresh install, the Cinnamon x86 version. Solid as a rock, and I'm really liking the changes to Cinnamon. So is this finally, really, truly the banishment of Gnome 3? I see nothing named "gnome" running in the Processes under System Monitor. :D It feels (seat of the pants anyways) one hell...

Re: Full range of volume from keyboard controls (Mint 14/MAT

I do not have a solution to the problem, but I can offer an explanation. In Windows, the audio system looks at the full power available from the sound hardware and scales it from full power backwards, assigning a percentage from 0-100% to the output. PulseAudio works differently. The 0-100% scale us...

Re: What prompted your move to linux?

The first time I met Linux, it was Mandrake 9.2, downloaded off the internet onto three CD-Rs using a dialup connection that took a day. I couldn't get the family computer to burn CDs or play DVDs, and didn't know enough to go online and look for information or help. I was 14. The next time I looked...

Re: Best company to order a new laptop from?

I was going to recommend the Bonobo Extreme from System 76, but the Windows requirement kills that idea. Lenovo's ThinkPad W series is big, sturdy, and powerful. You could also look at an Asus ROG laptop. You didn't specify if size or performance was more important. At that price, you could go eithe...

Re: Full range of drivers needed. I've got an HP DV7.

To begin, you need to know exactly what's inside your DV7, as it can vary wildly from model to model. Try this in terminal: sudo lshw That will list all of your hardware devices. It also can tell you who made what components, so Realtek or Intel audio chipsets, Broadcom wireless, etc. From there you...

Re: What if Linux Mint moved away from Ubuntu?

Gonna jump on the bandwagon and say let's do it. A move of the magnitude we're talking here takes years. Ubuntu started as little more than a tweaked, colorful version of Debian, and then slowly moved to their own base, using the raw basics Debian puts out to underpin the system. If you compare the ...

Re: Whats your flavor and why?

Isn't it sweet Linux Mint gives you a choice from so many fine desktops? Where does one start? That's probably my favourite part of Mint. It's not "we feel this is best, and you should too". It's "Here's the platter, pick your poison". And across all of the variants, familiar details show up, like ...

Re: Whats your flavor and why?

I'm a serial desktop hopper. Honestly, there needs to be an entry in the next DSM about it. That said, after using both extensively, I've settled into Mint's Cinnamon desktop. For me, it's the best blend of eye-candy, functionality, and speed. I should note that switching from a laptop with Nvidia g...

Frankenlaptop - Anyone else done this?

My current/previous laptop, a Lenovo T61 with Nvidia graphics, just bit the biscuit. The Nvidia chipset on these laptops was known for thermal issues causing the silicon layers on the NVS140M to separate. I've had the laptop for almost two years, and it's been a good steed. Nevertheless, I needed to...

Hey dbaier3, That's a nice bleeding-edge rig, especially in terms of the processor and graphics. I can't see any issues with your build, based on the knowledge I have. You'll need at least v319.32 Nvidia drivers to get the GTX760 working, and BluRay playback is now supported in VLC under Ubuntu 13.0...

Salutations from Vancouver Island

Hi everyone. I'm relatively new to the Mint scene, not as new to Linux as a whole. I'd run various flavours of Ubuntu going back to 2008, until the introduction of Unity, which I didn't care for much and didn't run well on my laptop. I spent some time hopping between Xubuntu, the radical Mint 12, Cr...

Re: The best Linux 14 distro

This is one of those Taste The Difference things. Every DE has it's pros and cons. Cinnamon is lovely, and everyone who has worked to make it what it is should be very proud. For my purposes, I prefer lightning quick over pretty, and because my main system is five years old now, I run the MATE versi...
