Re: old hardware advice appreciated (cooling issues)

Did you accidentally post the thumbnails rather than full-size photos? The camera settings in my phone wren't optimal. I realized this only after I reassembled the computer and I didn't want to take it apart for the 3rd time because dealing with the heat sink brackets in the tight space was finicky...

Re: old hardware advice appreciated (cooling issues)

Thanks for your replies! It would be helpful to know more about your system itself, What motherboard and CPU are you using? I've finally found some helpful documentation. I was initially clueless because the mainboard designation on the sticker was totally wrong. It's a Fujitsu-Siemens D2836-S Data-...

[solved] old hardware advice appreciated (cooling issues)

Hey :) My knowledge about hardware is totally outdated and my hardware is old, too - hence the following question: I experience outages, apparently due to overheating of the northbridge in these hot summer days. The other sensor readings seem to be normal. I applied thermal paste, set the fans to fu...

Re: Black screen of death during boot

Many thanks for your reply.! :) How did you upgrade? Inline. You posted LM18.1 data. Does this mean you can not even boot into a live session of LM21? Correct. Why would I want a live dvd if the upgrade takes place in line? Did you just try booting normally without those? Yes. It seems I can make it...

[solved] Black screen of death during boot

Hello :) I upgraded to Mint Mate 21 and now I'm getting a black screen during boot and am stuck - the same goes for the compatibility mode. I tried to solve this by removing and reinstalling/configuring X but that worked just once. I added "nomodeset" and "xforcevesa" to no avail...

Re: how to check the discspace needed for upgrade (from 19.3 to 20)?

Thanks for your support! :) How much space do you have available? GParted says I have 3.43GB unused space on / /home is a separate partition and swap is also a partition. I believe I can save a few more GB by removing LibreOffice, Android Studio, Firefox and Virtual Box and by cleaning up other thin...

[solved] how to check the discspace needed for upgrade (from 19.3 to 20)?

Good evening :)

as the title says - how do I determine if the remaining discspace suffices for an upgrade (from 19.3 to 20)?
Is all well if...

Code: Select all

mintupgrade check
...doesn't complain about it?

any help is much appreciated! :D

managing journald / logs

Good evening and a happy new year 2022! :) Is it possible -in whatever way- to automatically limit the logs by the boots (e.g. keep logs for the last X boots, delete logs from boots older than X days/weeks/etc.)? How do I combine different variables (like journal size, time, etc)? Is it somehow poss...

[solved] cockpit: login fails

Good evening! :D I used to have a working installation that I removed, installed again, removed again etc. and at some point ran in dependency problems that I solved though. When I'm starting cockpit, the login doesn't appear but just a message "Internal error in login process". There are ...

grub got installed to your win drive. I don't think it did? ============================== Boot Info Summary =============================== => Grub2 (v2.00) is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks at sector 1 of the same hard drive for core.img. core.img is at this location and looks for (,m...

Re: Dual-boot with 1 drive for each installation

Addendum: Instead of having to change the boot order, I simply excluded the drive with windows on it from the boot order list in the BIOS. Unfortunately, Mint doesn't load at all - I don't even make it to the grub menu. What did I miss? Assuming drives as suggested by rene, sda=win, sdb=mint, And ho...

Dual-boot with 1 drive for each installation

Hey :) as the title says. I'm interested in adding one drive from one pc with a Mint system on it into another machine with an existing Windows installation but all the guidelines about dual-boot that I found so far assume a fresh installation of one (or both) systems and a configuration of the boot...

Re: Nouveau crashes system intermittently

I would suggest running without that file to see if there is a difference. That seems to have improved the situation drastically. I've had 2-3 crashes right after start-up (with the same entries in the kernel-log) but that's about it. The error-messages in the Xorg-log are also gone. I'll see how i...

Re: Nouveau crashes system intermittently

Mint comes with a default system config file. That is what most people use. The file you posted overwrites part of the default file with what is listed. That is why I asked why it was added. . I would suggest running without that file to see if there is a difference. . Thanks for the explanation. T...

Re: Nouveau crashes system intermittently

I recommend you do the updates in small groups so you can determine if the nouveau update or some other update caused the problems. Will updates for specific packages come one after another or does synaptic present me the newest available one? In the latter case, I may not be able to determine the ...

Re: Nouveau crashes system intermittently

Thanks for your help. :D I'm guessing, however, that may not be an option. Sadly not. I saved all personal stuff just a short while ago but I couldn't imagine that problems like these can happen - I've never experienced something like this before. :? The last snapshot that I took (long before these ...

Nouveau crashes system intermittently

Good evening! :) a while ago, my system began to freeze intermittently after a certain update and hard resets are the only option left. I have the impression that the crashes occur regardless of the user input (or the lack thereof). Unfortunately, I don't remember wether this began after one of the ...

How to add Nouveau DDX? How to force software 2D?

Hi, I'm having major display problems when I'm browsing this website: https://www.naviki.org/de/naviki/route-planen/ . Before upgrading to my current os setup (Linux Mint 19.3/Nouveau), I used the proprietary nVidia driver before the upgrade and never had any problems. The Nouveau developers suggest...

3d images in Facebook

Greetings earthlings :)

3d images in Facebook don't work for me. I get odd, bright and flickering artifacts when I hover the cursor over the picture.
I'm using FF 79. I disabled the extensions to no avail.

Any help is much appreciated! :)

cheers
