Re: Ubuntu drops Unity and moves back to GNOME

That's rather interesting... Quite the bit of humble pie to have to eat after all this time.

Though Gnome3 isn't much better. So eh. (/KDE fanboy)

It means good news for wayland adoption though!

I'm not really a big fan of IoT devices, but more work on the Desktop, Servers and Cloud is good news!

Re: Is the enthusiasm gone on KDE/Plasma?

Using Mint KDE 18.1 here and liking it!

There were 1 or 2 minor hiccups with 18.0, but those are gone in 18.1.

I actually like the Breeze theme. It's new and has room to grow (I do still prefer some of the Oxygen Icons), I prefer it over Oxygen overall.

Re: New people need to stop using 18.X and use 17.3.

KDE 18.1 here, KDE 18.0 was a little buggy (I had 2 bugs that we're quickly fixed), but 18.1 has been pretty stable so far. There haven't been enough bugs for me not to recommend it to people new and old. I agree 17.3 was really polished and bug-free, but software is changing and 17.3 will be left b...

I used to *love* Apple's user interface philosophy. However, it is not now what it once was, and not in a good way. It's not that I'm against advancement and evolution, but I *am* against change-for-the-heck-of-it. I'll second that. Starting at around OSX10.2 Apple's UI was absolutely brilliant. Wa...

Best of luck to him! I'm not very tech savvy, but isn't there a good reason so many distros being based off of Debian? Namely, designing a package management system being very hard? It seems to me he may be bitting off a lot more then he can chew, and his past choices to avoid Debian haven't exactly...

@moem thanks for the link, i understood clem's point of view but is different to mine, i dont say one of us is right, there is not a right side, these are just point of view, i'd like to have a choise during the installation, to take my decision if i wanna use a fully free and open software or the ...

Re: Poll: What's Mint KDE 18 like? Please click!

There have been a few hiccups, I've had the system freeze up twice and the wireless not remembering the password (which I was able to fix by deleting the network). At first I was kinda skeptical about the new "flat" look, but I'm actually kinda growing fond of it. Overall, I'm liking it de...

Re: Why maintainers matter

As a non-techie, most of that article kinda goes over my head. I'm very much a "I just want to download and click on the app and go." person. No compiling only to find out I'm missing library x. The mint software center is nice, but many of the apps are often waaaaaay way out of date. Then...

Re: "Sarah" (MINT 18) Changes coming?

Interesting... As a KDE user this won't affect me much, but it seems like a good thing for other desktops. Though if I'm understanding it, this means a more severe departure from Ubuntu? The mint team is rather small though right? Are they ready to support and maintain a whole software suit in addit...

Re: What are you most dissatisfied with in Linux Mint?

I have only one complaint with Linux Mint. Wifi I've had trouble with the wifi on every computer but one that I've installed Mint on. From slowed speeds to complete loss of wifi. I'm trying to wean myself away from Windows, but I find myself booting up the Windows machine out of frustration from wa...

Re: Linux and college?

For all the CS courses I took at university, we were graded by the source code. Meaning you didn't actually have to build or run it on your computer, so long as it could be built and run on the instructors computer. So for example you could write code on linux that the instructor could compile into ...

Re: Linux Mint is the right choice for experienced users?

My example. Previously, I have used Debian initially with console and later X server. I have learned to use the Unix commands. I am interested a question. What encourages advanced users to switch from using of a heavyweight distribution to Linux Mint? "It Just Works" is nice to have, even...

I had this thougth that comptuers could be common place in the future like buying a stack of shingles. They are simply machines and people carry around their personal "biologically-encoded" OS in a credit card. If you've seen those Credit card USB's that's the general idea if not a credit...

Also, I have verified that it is a removeable processor, not a soldered unit. I am assuming that a newer processor would be both faster and more efficient. I want something that will reliable function in the chassis that I have without burning itself up. It looks like your options for upgrading the...

I remember the really really old WonderWorks Narnia series. Despite having awful cutouts and terrible special effects, I remember they remained pretty true to spirit of the source material. I have fond memories of them. I don't remember too much in specific about the new ones. I watched them all, bu...

Re: Is Linux Secure or Vulnerable?

It's never completely safe. But I've never had anyone seriously suggest that windows is more secure than linux. Linux/Unix were designed with security in mind. (Big corporations wanted stable and secure multi-user OSes for their servers) Windows was designed very much without security. (In a simple ...

Re: Best Windows?

It's ...hard to comment without doing some bashing. Windows prior to 7 was just a terrible, awful ugly mess. Ignoring the bugs: Win2k was really rudimentary. It worked well enough for the time I suppose, but it's woefully outclassed. It's like Mac OS 9, it served it's purpose, but OS X outclasses it...
