Different DE - Same /home

I've seen some earlier posts on this theme, but what I would like to ask is for a more integrated and coherent response to the question: How does one install (in order to test and evaluate) different DEs (Mate [current], Cinnamon, KDE, Xfce4 [an old fave], LXDE, Fluxbox, etc. on Mint 19 so that each...

[SOLVED] Update manager replaced levels with arrows

Hi Mint 19 Mate. The Update Manager seems to have replaced the levels/ type (1, 2, 3, 4,5) with a shield for security and an upwards arrow for ordinary (non-security) updates. I cannot tell what level new updates are. Anyone else finding this? Is this a new feature or is this a bug? Anyway I can cha...

HP LaserJet 1320 - no longer printing with LO 6.0.3.2

Hi all Mint 18.3, using Mate. For no good reason, LO 6.0.3.2 suddenly stopped printing using HP 1320 LaserJet printer. The CUPS server all seems right, and I can print PDF files (although one side of the page looks quite pale). Anyone else got an issue with this, and how might I (successfully!) debu...

Re: extremely slow file copy to USB

Finally ... so, how long was that? 40 minutes for 730MB? Just rubbish. Please developers - make this a priority for 18.4.

Re: extremely slow file copy to USB

Still waiting ... this is close to intolerable. Can anyone please help me understand why my fave OS is just so crap at file transfers from mainframe to USB? I've been waiting for over 30 minutes now for this file to transfer and to all intents and purposes the dialog box is stuck. It gives no meanin...

Re: extremely slow file copy to USB

I also have this problem of a really slow transfer to USB sticks (incl. 3.0). I hate to admit it, but Windows 7 far out-paces my Mint 18.3 in terms of speed of data transfer. I'm trying to transfer 734.00MB to a USB 3.0 stick, and I've been here for the last 15 minutes. The file transfer indicatordo...

Re: extremely slow file copy to USB

I gotta confess - this really f**in' sux in LM18.3 I've been waiting for the last twenty minutes for a 1.5MB file to transfer. The indicator suggests that it's already transferred, but it really isn't. What nonsense is this? Give me areal indication of what has transferred and how much longer I am s...

Maybe OT? No email notifications of replies to topics from b

Hello This may be off-topic for this board, but couldn't see an alternative - perhaps the admins/ mods can move this to a more appropriate location? Although I checked the box and the forum has my email address, I am not getting notifications when someone replies to my posts. Is this not a functioni...

A reliable screen lock for Xfce4

Hi Does anyone know of a reliable screen lock for Xfce4. The default for Xfce4 is unreliable: it either takes too long (up to 3 minutes after clicking the icon) to kick in, or just doesn't work at all. Actually, come to think of it, this lengthy delay applies when trying to log out of Xfce4 too, so ...

By-passing trash on Xfce4

Mint 14 with Xfce4 DE. This has got to be the smallest space for trash I have ever come across - it allows me to delete a few files and then tells me it's full and needs to be manually emptied. Is there a way of by-passing this trash so that files are directly deleted rather than being moved to the ...

Re: Messed up my terminal

I don't know if it'll fix the issue, but yes, you can reinstall it. Open the terminal and type in sudo apt-get install --reinstall gnome-terminal You may instead wish to purge it then install, since whatever's causing the issue will likely persist otherwise. Yeah - the way to do that would be to si...

Re: Getting Openvpn to connect at startup

Depending on what DE you are using, you should have something from the main menu like "Services" or "Session startup" or something like that. Check there and see if the OpenVPN is enabled (it'll be a tick mark next to it). If not, then that would help I think. The other alternative would be to check...

Re: how to install Cinnamon

Unless I misunderstood your question, the first thing you need to do on a blank HDD is to install an operating system. Cinnamon is a desktop environment (DE), so will need an operating system to work with. It cannot boot on its own. As tdockery97 suggests: download an *.iso for your machine (be care...

Another option might be:

use the Menu Editor option and if the game you are looking for is in italics then just check the box next to it and then it should show up in your main menu again.

[SOLVED?] I may have found a fix for this: 1. install akonadiconsole sudo apt install akonadiconsole 2. enter akonadiconsole and locate the username of the email a/c that keeps demaning attention 3. delete that entry 4. close akonadiconsole 5. enjoy the peace and quiet :-) Hopefully this fix will al...

Re: New Mint experiences - FWIW

Hi Tartufo, and welcome! Thanks LindseyD :-) 2.2. Curious: why is the root seemingly deprecated? This is an Ubuntu thing. I'm surprised you missed the controversy, if you've been on Linux that long. But if you google, you might find some archived posts somewhere. The short answer is: they didn't wa...

Re: New Mint experiences - FWIW

I don't see how setting a different root password can "screw things up" as long as you don't forget it. Maybe because you're not always sure which pwd to use? I changed it as one of the first things after install, since I've always kept these separate on my boxes. It's still the user password that ...

Getting rid of KWallet (reminders) without losing KOrganizer

Hello On Linux Mint 14 (Nadia), how do I rid myself of the annoying KWallet service reminder without losing the functionality of KOrganizer? The history is this: When I first installed Mint, I installed KMail, but since that was such a nightmare in terms of migration and resource consumption I moved...
