I think LMDE 5 will not be demanding more than now. And if you need a lighter DE, you can choose Mate or XFCE on LMDE too.
Actually, I'm with LMDE 4 with Mate on a 4GB 2008 DELL Laptop and it works like a charm, +/- 550 Mo at start. It would be less with XFCE.

I do ! cinnamon purged, mate-environment-extras installed, no problem at all for two years now.

After searching in vain for a LMDE3 Xfce edition, I installed the iso offered by LazarusProject https://osdn.net/projects/sfnet_lazarusproject/downloads/LinuxMint%20Debian%20XFCE/lmde-3-xfce-by-lazarus-64bit.iso . Once installed, pointed the repositories to linuxmint's 'debbie' + debian's 'buster' ...

Just install Vanilla Debian and it seems to be a good compromise.
I miss the update icon in the systray but it works so good.

And my computer doesn't allow me to run a virtual machine.

I would like to know if it would be possible to update to Buster by changing the sources list of a LMDE 3 (only the official debian repos).
What problems could occured ?

Best course of action is to back up your data then do a clean/fresh install of the version you want. There is only one version, LMDE3 comes as Cinnamon only. I will do a fresh install of LMDE3 and if there's a way of installing a Mint Mate desktop (I want it to look like Mint) then I will do so lea...
