Re: Mint without the Linux?

Mint OS sounds good but how 'bout "MentOS" :) Technically speaking Linux is the OS, Mint is just a flavor..... literally. . Actually, technically speaking, Linux is *only* the kernel, GNU is nearly everything else ;) But without the kernel, what do you have? No OS  .

Re: How do you pronounce Daryna?

I think personally it's kinda confusing that we have a girls name where people are expecting the menu to say "Start". If it was me I would keep the code name branding to a minimum and simply call it Mint 5, Mint 6 etc. I think Fedora gets it right, they have code names but really its just...

Re: How do you pronounce Daryna?

I suppose its more popular in Australia, i have known many Fiona's. my next door neighbour, my old music teacher, my old bus driver, the organizer of a service for youth transport which i helped in.. I have noticed one thing though it seems to be in the older generation 40+ name, so obviously from ...

Re: How do you pronounce Daryna?

Quite a few years ago there was a song about Fatima that some of you old duffers might remember. I also like Fiona. My youngest granddaughter is a big Shrek fan. :-) Fred Good morning Fred. The name Fatima is a bit too "religious" for my taste. Being 1/2 Portugese, I've had more than enou...

Re: dual booting with XP

PS: It's "Windows", not "Windows". If you can't spell, pay attention to Firefox 2 as it will automatically highlight when you misspell words ;) I agree. If someone is searching for help on this forum, they will not likely type "Windblows" and so they will miss some of ...

Re: How do you pronounce Daryna?

Fiona has a sexy sound to it. I'm with you JAK. I dunno personally i'd like to see an unusual name ive never heard of to continue the recent trend. Celena, Daryna, Elyssa, F.......a what else can fill the blanks though? Elyssa is not too common here in the U.S., but it is used. Celena and Daryna I'...

Re: A week with Linux Mint; what needs to be improved

And there are some things I'd like improved too. First, is the software portal. I really like the idea, but the lack of programs is what made me think twice about it. It would be nice to be able to have the amount of programs that Ubuntu's add/remove has, and I hope that this will grow in time. Sti...

Re: How do you pronounce Daryna?

Hello everyone. I am a new Mint user. I started using Linux about 14 months ago, and started with Ubuntu Edgy Eft, and have followed their releases up to the current Gutsy Gibbon. I decided to recently to give Mint Daryna a try, and I find that this is a quality release supported by yet another fin...

Re: My Firefox Install Suddenly and Unexplicably Died

Thanks for the suggestion of installing Firefox beta 5. It seems to work well (I'm using it now) but as you pointed out, there are very few extensions that work. In fact, when I started the application it listed all but one of my extensions as being incompatible. This is a major bummer, but I'll try...

My Firefox Install Suddenly and Unexplicably Died

 I was using my computer last night just fine. When I woke up this morning to use my computer to surf a bit, I could not connect to the outside world. My internal network is running fine, and my Windows box can surf just fine. I loaded up another Linux distro in VirtualBox and that worked as we...

Re: Mac vs Windows vs Linux

Anyone who thinks that Apple withhold their software from generic hardware just as a marketing ploy "don't get it". Apple are a hardware company not a software company!! The difference is Apple's design philosophy is that if you care about your hardware then you will care about the softwa...

Re: Mac vs Windows vs Linux

I feel kinda lucky because I never got very interested in any gaming. But when it comes to Mac vs Windows vs Linux, the biggest things for me are money and freedom. Using Linux costs me little or nothing; and, just as importantly, it gives me the freedom to do what I want with the operating system....

Re: Password protected .mov files on linux?

Mplayer is great as a plugin for Firefox, but I never use it as a standalone player. VLC is king in that department. As for your password protected .mov files, I don't have answer. I didn't quite catch-on to the fact that you need to submit a password each time you want to few the file. Is there a w...

Re: Mac vs Windows vs Linux

You're preaching to the choir. Many people would like to see OSX run on any PC (without hacks & patches). Many people would like to see Windows secure, virus free and stop their DRM nonsense. Many people would like to see Linux get a bit more user friendly and have support for games. If your mai...

Thats what I do.

There's an extension for FIrefox called CacheViewer. It'll get you there quicker.

Have you installed the proprietary codecs from the repositories? Mplayer doesn't work for me either to play .mov files, but VLC and Totem work just fine.

Even though I continue to think my points are valid, I do concede that you too have some valid points also. We just see it from two different perspectives. :-) If there was room for only one opinion on a given subject, this would be such a boring world to live in. Don't you think? Absolutely! What ...

Re: Even Bill Gates has given up on Vista

I saw the comment regarding itunes. I haven't tried but have run across itunes at wineHQ. There's a post that claims "as of wine 0.9.57 the itunes music store seems to work" http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=1347 Thanks for the link, I gave it a shot. iT...
