Re: USB Corrupted... but boots...

The way I have always created my bootable usb is: 1) Inserted the usb in the port & ran (as root) #ls -l 'dev/disk/by-id/*usb* and got an answer like ...../sdx (say) 2) Then first ran (also as root) #mkdosfs -I /dev/sdx 3) and finally #dd if=/path/******.iso of=/dev/sdx bs=1M;sync This has always wo...

Re: Authentication Failure for Synaptic

It might be expecting your sudo password, which is the first/original user password which was set up during Mint installation. Root is a separate entity, sudo gives the first/original user temporary super user priviledges. They are not the same. Mint was set up to use sudo priviledges. Thanks. So i...

[Solved] Authentication Failure for Synaptic

A newcomer in Linux Mint with previous experience only in Debian and opensuse, I am habituated to work with su and not sudo; so I have set a password for root. So as root when I give the shell command #synaptic & It works fine. However for convenience I have put some frequently used icons like Termi...

Introducing myself

Installed linuxmint-17.1-mate-32bit.iso today on my Dell Vostro 1014 laptop. A senior citizen and completed 3/4th of a century; lives in Kolkata, India. Main OSes were Debian (Sarge, Etch, Lenny, Squeeze, Wheezy) and SLED/opensuse (10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 11.2, 11.3). My entertainment is my visits to my f...

[Solved]Desktop Icons

Installed today linuxmint-17.1-mate-32bit.iso on my dell vostro 1014 laptop. But I found no 'Trash' icon on the Desktop. Can this icon be put on the Desktop?
This is my first foray in linux mint. I have so long used debian, where the Trash icon always appeared on the desktop on installation.

Re: booting with live usb flash drive

About creating the flash drive: after inserting the flash drive in the usb port I ran as root #ls -l /dev/disk/by-id/*usb . Iascertained that the drive was sdb and then ran, again as root, the shell command #dd if=linuxmint-17.1-mate-32bit.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=1M;sync . That is how I have always creat...

booting with live usb flash drive

I created a live bootable flash drive #dd if=linuxmint-17.1-mate-32bit.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=1M;sync I could cheque it on my Dell Vostro 1140 laptop. But when I tried on my Zenith(India) OEM netbook it didn't do anything; the machine simply continued showing the logo of the manufacturer and didn't proc...

Re: planning to come to lmde

Here is the first roadblock, actually a semi-roadblock. I have 2 machines: a dell-vostro-something laptop and a Indian OEM zenith-always on netbook, both 32-bit. Since the vostro machine is dual boot with windows 7, I thought it advisable to retain debian-squeeze. For the netbook I panned to install...

Re: planning to come to lmde

Hi! Welcome to the forums.... Just a tip, but I would wait a week or two, as brand new .isos' are being tested and should be available for download soon. With the iso your downloading you will be faced with a huge number of updates, that may or may-not cause you problems. The updates size would be ...

planning to come to lmde

I have used sarge, etch, lenny and squeeze(present OS), SLED10, opensuse10.2, opensuse10.3, opensuse11.2, opensuse11.3 and opensuse12.1. I am planning to try lmde-mate. In fact the iso file is being downloaded now even when I'm posting this mail. I'd appreciate being warned of any pitfalls that I ma...
