Re: Linux veteran, should I use Mint?
And linux is linux regardless... I wish more people understood this. All the griping and moaning and distro-hopping and distro slamming, it's stupid. It's all just window dressing on top of the real OS—the shell. The primary differences are the boot loader, the init system, kernel version, the DE o...

Re: Linux veteran, should I use Mint?
I've been using Linux since 1999, and I primarily use Slackware and Debian sid. But I really appreciate the completeness and OOTB experience of Mint. There's no reason that someone who's used to using more "advanced" distros can't enjoy using Mint, too.

Yes, of course, just updated. Only 32-bit still however, using this method. And yes, as Openbox is standard with LXDE.3fRI wrote:Hmmmm...but is it still LXDE? And do you still have the Openbox option with it?

Re: Mass Market Customer Expectations
Just out of curiosity, have you ever read "In the Beginning was the Command Line" by Neal Stephenson? I own the book, but the full text can be downloaded here: http://www.cryptonomicon.com/beginning.html Anyway, the only real way to "swell the ranks" as you say, is to have Linux installed on hardwar...

Re: Mass Market Customer Expectations
Docks don't involve messing up the alt-tab behavior, they don't implement their own start menu, and docks don't start out with random icons that other people thought you might like to use. In fact, docks are most useful when you personally customize them to run particular suites of programs that yo...

Re: Ubuntu Raring - a dog, not a ringtail!
@JWJones: Something to keep in mind with Ubuntu, especially since using Unity/Compiz, is that if you even sneeze or hiccup you get one of those error messages on your screen. I have yet to have it be a showstopping problem, and there is a solution so that you just won't see them anymore: Open termi...

Re: Ubuntu Raring - a dog, not a ringtail!
Wow, seriously? Out of curiosity, I decided to download Lubuntu 13.04 and give it a whirl. Changing from the /home directory to the /Applications directory in PCManFM yielded this. So much for "release it on this date, no matter what!" distros. "Time to die is over. It is time to bury the dead". Ub...

Yup, particularly the ThinkPads. Their reliability and solidity is fairly legendary, and they are used by many in the Linux community.tab123 wrote:hey thanks for the quick replies. Actually, I am finding lenovos are actually pretty good generally. they seem to be made really solid.

I've had great success using IBM/Lenovo ThinkPads with Linux, particularly the T-series (currently using a T61). Everything just works OOTB. Great resource, here:

Re: Thank you for Mint XFCE!
For my Thinkpad R60, I find that actually LM KDE works faster than I ever expected. I prefer KDE on the laptop and the desktop because I like to use Ktorrent for torrenting and Dolphin as a file manager. Dolphin has a nice way of previewing images. I feel most comfortable with KDE overall on the de...
