Re: Help with Solution to mintUpdate Error, Please?

It is raining right now. Internet access becomes a thing more suitable for (eventually) sending very short textual content during those times. But I'll see what I can figure out when next it's dry here. Will try switching to different ones. I was thinking that I had already done so, but I maintain t...

Help with Solution to mintUpdate Error, Please?

I thought there was an area for the "Mint-specific" applications/files that Clem (et al) adds as part of fixing/patching/improving Ubuntu into Mint, but I don't see it now. By the way, why is is that the "Desktops & Window Managers" section does not list its sub-forums (sub-sub-forums? ) on th...

Re: Is this ram usage normal?

Could it have something to do with: (installed as mint19 cinnamon converted to xfce) By the way, cool avatar; I never noticed it before. I didn't know we were able to use animated ones here. I also didn't know I was still capable of spewing water from my nose  . That'll teach me to drink water ...

Re: firefox wrong theme

Xfce has been in the slow transition from GTK2 to GTK3. Could this be some sort of GTK issue? Are you using a GTK2 or GTK3 theme, and what happens if you use one from the other category, instead?

Re: Timeshift. Oh dear.

No no no Okay. his name has been mentioned multiple times in this thread already I did see the references to a "Teejee." But not everyone uses the same user name everywhere (for reasons of security, if nothing else). Oh, but I do, but life has also taught me that all you can do is lead the horse to...

Re: Timeshift. Oh dear.

You and I know that. The question is, do newcomers? I venture the answer is no. The problem I'm alluding to is a poor choice of language in describing what Timeshift is and does. That language causes some people to make assumptions that aren't valid. I don't know if I've ever thanked you. For your ...

Re: Timeshift. Oh dear.

It's main failing, IMO, is it's refusal to allow anything but a "simple" drive as backup destination. It will not permit access to my RAIDs or the NAS/other online storage, Oh, wow, this is PRICELESS ! Right up until I posted my (immediately) previous message, I was still thinking: Well, it isn't p...

Re: Timeshift. Oh dear.

Bear in mind that up to July 2014, M$ had a Windows Testing Division of about 150 professional testers and 1200 test-lab computers Which makes one wonder how they still managed to release products like Windows ME and Windows 95. They seemed like what I'd expect if some hacker broke into their syste...

Re: Timeshift. Oh dear.

And I just don't have the financial ability to purchase some kind of device to put my backups on. If your data and time aren't even worth the price of a USB stick then don't worry about it. Lol. Like the answer to, "Is a $50 motorcycle helmet good enough?" ("Yes, if you have a $50 head.") It's not ...

Re: SOLVED - I don't get any update from the Manager

I've always had mine configured to display all (levels of) updates, but to never install any automatically. I see the shield icon in my upper panel change to one with an exclamation point in it, so I open the application and look at the changelog information (when available) for the updates it has. ...

Hmm. Well, maybe it makes things easier for the developer or something?

Re: Timeshift. Oh dear.

Speaking of backups, I'm pretty sure that I did one, once, back in the 1990s. But I might be mistaken  . I suppose I probably should. I have lots of stored data, and one or two things are things that I'd be hard-pressed to obtain again (digitized copies of old family photos, mainly, and the ori...

Re: Question on Update Manager

The following package has been updated: libservlet3.1-java (8.0.32-1ubuntu1.6) to 8.0.32-1ubuntu1.7[/code] The label "Tomcat 8" is a bit misleading This is one of those issues that would never have occurred if Clem hadn't given us the "convenience" of grouping packages together in mintUpdate, methi...

Re: Timeshift. Oh dear.

What I liked about Linux Mint was how I could put it onto people's PCs, people who had only used Windows, and they could just use it. That is generally still the case. For most people. Most of the time. And, really, that has ALWAYS been the state of existence here. This is linux, lol - it was free,...

Re: I don't get any update from the Manager

Can you please explain why there is a large difference in the list of things to update between Discover and the default Update Manager (see pictures below)? I am sort of a "negative expert," lol, so this may not be all of it. But Clem has decided that we should see "groups" instead of individual fi...

Re: Installed Mint 18.3 now VLC UPnP won't work

However, if it's a bug in libdnla, is it such a big problem to fix it? It is if the developer has zero interest in doing so (and no one else takes over the project). By lack of spare time, motivation and interest, libldna development is currently discontinued (this may change though). Don't expect ...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

Thanks, that's a great first step. Can I assume that the rest is trial and error to see what works? Assuming some of the apps need configuration, is there any documentation for that? If that was directed to me, I have no idea. I found what I posted by spending 30 seconds performing a simple web sea...

Re: Install KDE on Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon, MATE or Xfce

Hi, It did work, but not all of the KDE applications were installed. The only KDE program I saw was the KDE System Settings. Things like KDE Connect, Kate, and others do not install with that command. Hopefully this will help. At the current time using Kubuntu is the best option if you want KDE. I ...

Re: HiDPI: icons are tiny and invisible

I've thought for a while now that people (NOT the users of these things, but those who create the code) place too much significance on resolution and not enough on... actual physical size, and also that in terms of how it relates to the situation. It is one thing to have a high resolution display th...
