Re: NEW Stable VLC, 9Feb2018

And I have read that adding a PPA that has the term "daily" - or "nightly" - in it can be unwise I would consider "daily" or "nightly" to mean "We made some more changes in the software today, but haven't had a chance to test them yet." Or "Here is another version for YOU brave souls to test for us...

Re: How to install Deepin Desktop in linux mint 18.2 ?

Years ago, I liked the thought of having the ability to use multiple DEs in one installation. Having read many times about how this can be... unwise for the non-expert to attempt, I chose a distro that was developed by someone who, by all accounts, is both very intelligent in general and very talent...

Re: NEW Stable VLC, 9Feb2018

Thank you for your FAST reply! Is there ANY reason to install the new stable version of VLC, released two days ago? No. Ah. I'm going to assume you read my mind, and knew that I do not have a display device that is capable of HDR, and that I do not own one of those Google streaming devices (both the...

Re: Alternate Installation procedure possible?

place the LM18 install files on a blank, ext4 formatted, one partition drive, we'll call it "Hard Drive 1" (2) told it to install to "Hard Drive 1" (3) ran the install. From what you all have said, I surmise that the install might have to go from "Hard Drive 1" to another, such as "Hard Drive 2". I...

NEW Stable VLC, 9Feb2018

Is there ANY reason to install the new stable version of VLC, released two days ago?

If so, is there an easy way to do it (PPA?) in Mint 17(.3, I think)?

Thanks,
MDM

Re: Alternate Installation procedure possible?

MtnDewManiac: I' ll be starting out with a fresh, blank drive, so nothing else to worry about or protect. That's why I wanted (originally) to use the USB fetch and install method, but I've been told that that is not an option for LM18. So, you are saying that I could place the install files on the ...

My thanks to those who responded to my query. I was afraid that would be the answer.

It'd be much easier to install Mint 18.3 probably.
Undoubtedly. Just not my personal preference. But the previous versions of Mint will be supported through 2019, I think.

Re: Alternate Installation procedure possible?

Ah, not Cosmo. It was austin.texas: Someone helped me set things up here so that I could download the .ISO and place it into my grub menu as if it were a regularly-installed distro. I believe that might have been austin.texas, too. It worked great - and I left the .ISOs (one Mint 18 series and one ...

Re: Auto-login one user on Mint 18.2 XFCE - lightdm prob?

I talked to my son and he said that it would probably be OK if the two computers weren't absolutely identical, but Killian is autistic and they sometimes get fussy about things like that, so I thought it would be worth a little more effort to make it work the same. Yes, an established routine can b...

[SOLVED] Upgrade GTK+ to ≥3.14 ???

I am running Mint (Xfce) 17.3. After reading http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2017/12/install-liferea-rss-ubuntu-ppa , I decided to add the PPA in order to install the latest version of Liferea. When I went to the PPA web page, I saw this right near the top of the page: Liferea News Reader: No update for ...

Re: Is this worth adding RAM to? [SOLVED] (It was worth it!)

My old laptop gets unacceptably slow at times, especially if I have more than a few Facebook tabs open in Firefox. I can get 4 GB of RAM in this computer for about 25 bucks. Ah, but you can remove everything even vaguely related to Facebook - or at least install a good script-blocker - for free! Re...

Re: Unlocking Linux Mint 18.2 xfce

Is your computer just locking - or is it suspending? When I use the suspend option on my laptop, it turns off power to its USB ports (I know this because I often charge a little device via USB and it lights up when charging). I don't know one way or the other, but if the computer stops powering the ...

Re: Using wget to download dangerous files

If it's for your job, just buy a barebones (or "very" used) computer and claim it on your taxes, since it is a business expense. Unless you are working for someone else, of course, in which case have them purchase it. Don't use the computer for anything other than the task you're discussing in this ...

Not interested in spending the hours of investment of time I don't have, just to discover the LM flavor I spent time on doesn't do the application I might need a month from now . I think you might be operating under a misconception, here. Your choice of desktop environment does not restrict you in ...

So I have defined a shortcut for opening the whiskers menu when I hit either Windows keys on my keyboard. The problem is that I would like a my (bottom) panel to show up at the same time so I can see open programs, tray icons etc as I normally have my panel hidden. Now is it possible to define a ne...

Re: Security notice: Meltdown and Spectre

What you suggest goes against good practice and advice for new users. This patch wasn't dealt with in the best way, imo. A jump from 4.10 stable generic to the newest build of 4.13 is kind of freaky, without an explanation, don't you think? Imagine how I felt just a few minutes ago, when I was able...

1. I'm assuming a clean install (not compromised) So I assume I'm partially cloaked! Does Mint use/include SELinux? Re: How to downgrade packages that are updated by adding PPA?

I cannot help with your issue, but wanted to mention that for LONG text pastes like that, you can enclose the entire thing between a set of CODE tags and it'll be easier to deal with (might just be my opinion there, lol, but...). I do hope you manage to solve your problem. From a quick read, it almo...

It will remain in your outbox until the recipient reads it. But why? Because PM != email . I know that a PM is not the same thing as an email (*), but that doesn't answer my question. (*)I am assuming that "!=" is some kind of code for "is not the same thing as." If this is not the case, please cla...

Re: Private messages

It will remain in your outbox until the recipient reads it. But why? If you mail a letter to someone and they don't pull it out of the mailbox for two weeks, it's not YOUR mailbox that they eventually have to open in order to access it. I was under the impression that email works much the same way....
