Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

In the last line of the first trace the error is from "pciif.py" and the function names suggest it's trying to create a emulated device. My guess is that it's complaining about your network line in the DomU config file ("vif="). Do you perhaps have a model name specified that has been deprecated? Ju...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

I was worried that synergy might produce some lag when gaming, but I'll have to consider giving it a try in the future (as my KVM switch died). Here's something you can try ( haven't tested this on Mint ) if you want to permanently reserve certain hardware with pciback at startup. Howto configure pc...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

Thanks for help guys indeed it was not blacklisted. Now it works. Still i need to use this little handy script http://wiki.xen.org/wiki/Bind_lib.bash (no idea why it wont pass it other way) but other than that awesome. Now i can play with this vm and who knows maybe i will somehow make sound work t...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

lol. Guess I'm late to the party. Anyhow, good point on not accessing it while the VM/guest is active. Not good to assume everyone knows. I'm pricing what it would cost to build a second machine and do a decent upgrade on my server. Think I can keep it under a grand with the spare parts and cases I ...

Re: Fglrx + Xen = No X

I want to jump for joy, but I'm crossing my fingers instead. I got my Win7 DomU reinstalled in openSuse 12.3. Sound worked with the default windows drivers as soon as I passed it thru! I'm having some issues with video this time around though, but I'm hoping I'll resolve it with some updates (last t...

Re: Fglrx + Xen = No X

@ Locust - interesting that you had similar behavior Well it appears we have the same motherboard chipset and the same generation AMD FX CPU's (based on piledriver iirc). We are using AMD video cards for Dom0, but they are different generations. My gut says it's the Chipset and/or CPU. Have you loa...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

I'm in the middle of trying Xen vga passthrough on a different distro and I decided my Windows install was foobar so I decided to grab the drivers I had downloaded off the LV and do a fresh install. When I tried mounting my Win7 LV I got an error about it not appearing to be a proper ntfs drive. I w...

Re: Fglrx + Xen = No X

I'm really tired at the moment so I might be overlooking some things... but where are you actually setting the parameters for pci-back? It appears you've commented it out of /etc/default/grub so you're not loading it with the kernel or initramfs. You got it working with modprobe.d? Well, that's a mo...

Re: Fglrx + Xen = No X

Forgive my persistence, but have you tried this advice?: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=122257 . I did look at that sticky post, but it doesn't apply to me. It's meant to get you into X so you can install the proprietary drivers in the event you're unable to boot after install. I ...

Re: Fglrx + Xen = No X

OMG... LOL I can't stop laughing. Mint 13 + Xen on this machine. It's funny but it's not. First of all I had general weirdness. My nic card kept dying about 30 minutes in and no amount of fiddling would get it to stay connected after that. *Lots* of errors in the boot log. CPU halt errors shutting d...

Re: Fglrx + Xen = No X

1. To get sound in Windows domU, you plug a USB sound card into a passed-through USB port and connect the headphone output to the line input on the motherboard. You don't pass through the onboard sound. If you were to pass through the onboard sound, you'd be loosing sound under Linux / dom0. Lol. I...

Re: Fglrx + Xen = No X

In other news it seems my onboard audio doesn't work passed through (win7 driver issues). I should have tried it sooner. So I canceled my USB soundcard order before it shipped so I can try some things. I might end up having to get a proper internal soundcard if I want decent audio for my Win7 DomU. ...

Re: Fglrx + Xen = No X

@Powerhouse
afaik gfxmode is purely for grub - http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual ... ml#gfxmode
His /etc/defaults/grub already contains "radeon.blacklist=1" and "nomodeset".

Howto: Grub2 Multiboot Distro's w/LVM

TL:DR Howto add other distro's located on LVM LV's to main grub2 menu without worrying about grub-install errors when installing to a partitonless disk or an impotent os-prober. Disclaimer: This will only work if your main distro controlling the MBR bootloader (assuming Mint) and the additional dis...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

Thanks for sharing your WEI results. About 2 cores: do you mean 2 VCPUs or 2 cores = 4 VCPUs? He's running an AMD processor so Num_VCPUs = Num_CPU/Cores. In practice dom0 will take all the CPU resources it needs when Windows isn't running, and all the CPU resources available when Windows is running...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

I never tried suspending dom0 and made sure it won't suspend. To me it doesn't make sense to suspend dom0. How would dom0 know what's going on in a domU, even if it was possible to suspend? To me it's good enough that Xen applies the frequency scaling for the CPU and power states for PCI devices to...

Re: Fglrx + Xen = No X

Whoa. That is strange. It alternates between working and failing between boots with no user modification? On HD 5000 cards too. Maybe my theory was incorrect. What exactly do you mean X fails to load? Do you get a black screen like me? Or are you getting some sort of error when X attempts to load? I...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

So I had been wondering what the "viridian=1" option meant in Xen DomU configs and did some digging. I guess this is a reference to the code name of MS's Hyper-V. More specifically the option allows Xen to notify windows vista or later guests that - 1) they are running in a VM, 2) certain PV options...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

My bad. I was thinking that was only a temporary thing. Like stopping a service on a windows server doesn't actually keep it from loading at startup. You have to explicitly disable it from running at start up. Well, that's another reason to mess with Arch. Learning/refreshing my ailing memory. At an...
