Re: Screen resolution limited

Right now the monitor is connected to the VGA port. The EDID info lists a 1920x1080 maximum resolution. Would you connect the monitor to the HDMI port and post the output of xrandr --prop I assume the monitor brand is BenQ ? What is the model number? Extracted contents: header: 00 ff ff ff ff ff ff ...

Re: New build, need advice for graphics card

I need to choose a video card that will do the job without going overboard. I have been looking at 1050's and 1060's. I'm trying to keep price down without compromising to the point of being disappointed. I have an old 550ti now and it won't handle the 4k monitor. It looks like the GeForce GTX 750 ...

Re: How to remove a dead shortcut in the whisker menu.

Open the File Manager and go to .local/share/applications (a hidden folder). Look for a file named
Master PDF Editor 4.desktop. First try renaming it to Master PDF Editor 4.desktop.old.
Check in the menu. If there are no problems, then delete it.

Re: Hook Up a 3rd Monitor ?

With the third monitor connected, use this command in the Terminal and post the output: xrandr --verbose There will be many lines, so copy the output, open the Mint Forum reply window and select </> at the top. Press Ctrl+V to paste the copied lines into a code display window. I think USB 2.0 does s...

Re: NVidia 9600GT - loudy/too fast fan

I got the same result as you for Mint 19.2. I haven’t tested the sudo Xorg :0 -configure (or: sudo X :0 -configure ) command in a while, so something must have changed. However, when I type X -help in tty1, the output says: use: X [:<display>] [option] -configure probe for devices and write an xorg....

Re: NVidia 9600GT - loudy/too fast fan

You can only use the CoolBits option with the Nvidia driver. The problem is that I can't generate xorg.conf file to set coolbits. #Xorg :0 -configure Server is already active for display 0 This info is just for your learning: That method has to be used in a virtual console. Press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to ente...

Re: Cinnamon crash and goes only to software mode

Try using Base Mosaic , which is Nvidia’s substitute for Xinerama and supports up to 3 monitors in Linux. In the Nvidia Settings utility, click the Advanced button, which makes the " Enable Base Mosaic " option available. Set all displays to be on X screen 0 . Click Save to X Configuration File . Ty...

Your system has Secure Boot enabled. This prevents the Nvidia driver from loading. Either disable Secure Boot in the BIOS, or if you want it enabled for an added layer of security, then the Nvidia kernel modules that were built during the Nvidia driver installation will need to be signed. Many distr...

Re: Brightness function is not working

Did you try using the setpci method described in Pjotr’s guide? What was the exact command(s) you tested? You have to use the correct BusID from your system.

What is the output of this command: sudo find /sys/ -name brightness

I don't see anything listed for screen brightness control, only this for the keyboard backlight: /sys/devices/platform/applesmc.768/leds: smc::kbd_backlight Unless someone else with experience in MacBook brightness control responds to this topic, you would have to examine every folder for the listin...

One last point that you may be interested in. I noticed that the menu you were using only had the Shut Down button visible. If that’s what you wanted, then there’s a way to make those other buttons invisible, as seen in the picture below. whisker menu 3.png The procedure is to rename the Suspend, Hi...

Re: Menu Change

Open the menu to Settings > Appearance. Under the Style and Icons tabs, select Mint-Y. I personally don’t like that theme with it’s plain looking icons. My menu was using the Xfce-b5 theme. To move the Shut Down button to the far left, follow the info in my second post.
