Mixing Gtk and Qt on the same installation
Hi, I always wondered if it was ok to have both Gtk+ and Qt5 installed on the same machine. I'm starting, well I'm really getting back into software development and I want to try out both libraries to see which one I'm more confortable with. I was planning to install both Anjuta and Qtcreator. How d...

17.3 installation: Keeps looping the mint user login screen
Tried to install 17.3 on my Dell XPS 8700 yesterday but wasn't able to. The installer was stuck in a loop at the mint user login. When the countdown for mint logon got to zero the screen flashed black then the login would come right back and the countdown woulkd begin anew. I suspect the Nouveau dri...

Re: 3rd party GPUs during installation phase
Yes but then I would have to use the terminal to install the nvidia package. While I'm a tech and know how to do this, I also know that for the common joe that isn't really a solution. A simple screen being added to the install process asking: "We have detected an NVidia GPU in your system. Do ...

3rd party GPUs during installation phase
Hi! Would it be possible to give the user the possibility to install the 3rd party GPUs driver package during the installation process instead of after the reboot? I'm asking this because with 17.2 the default NVidia (nouveau) drivers are quite buggy for my GTX745. I have to install the NVidia drive...

Re: Why are my applications not the latest possible version?
I guess the reason we don't have the latest version of software on Linux is about the same as to why we don't have them on windows either. It isn't the role of the distro to manage 3rd party releases. Of course in a more closed/controlled environment like OSX where most 3rd party distribute their so...

Re: Missing major cities in Date & time settings
Well, they could set the time zone according to our IP address and geo location instead.
I just find that odd that one of the biggest province of Canada isn't represented.

Missing major cities in Date & time settings
Hi! Before LM17 when I went to set my time zone I could chose Montreal, but now there don't seem to be any cities in the Province of Quebec, Canada available... I know I can chose Toronto instead but I find it funny that every other province beside Quebec has at least its capital available in the li...

Re: What are your top tips for a Newbie?
It's an operating system... Don't worry about it. If you install it and everything seems to work then you're A-OK. Find some applications that you like and concentrate on learning how to get the most out of those. The OS (Linux) will do it's job in the background without any need for you to know how...

Re: 3 Monitors on 2 Graphics Cards for 1 X session
Most laptop GPUs limit you to two screen active at a time, either the builtin+external or two external.
To get a third screen we use an USB graphic adapter at work.

Unable to install NVidia drivers (black screen)
Hi! I'm about to go into panic attack mode... I've been trying all evening to install LM 17.1 with the proprietary Nvidia 331 drivers, but each time I get a black screen after rebooting the system. I did a search on google and followed a lot of instruction but I can't seem to make them works....

Re: reproducing dish-tv recordings
I don't believe you can. The data on the drive is encrypted by and for that setup box. It isn't readable on a computer. The only way that I know how is to get a video capture card and record them on your pc.

Re: Easiest way to setup drive mirroring
You know, thinking about it I believe you're right... Not much chance of data loss while the PC is off  In that case I should only use the shutdown one. That way I won't lose a session worth of work if the original /home drive doesn't work on the next boot up of the system. Thanks for all t...

Re: Windows Gaming
SC2 and D3 on a GT330M.. Forget it. At best you'll play at the lowest quality possible and still suffer slowdown. The problem isn't your ram but your GPU. Beside why install linux to play windows game? Wine doesn't give you 100% of the functionnality or performances that a real windows install does....

Re: Easiest way to setup drive mirroring
Ok, maybe I don't want drive mirroring. In fact what I would really want is something similar to time machine on mac OSX. I've found two program that were supposed to be like TM but one hasn't been updated since 2007 and the other has a bug list as thick as a NYC phone book. But I think I'm still ov...

Re: linuxband how to install?
This piece of software was written with the Gnome2 graphic libs.
Most distribution have now moved to Gnome3. I don't know if it is possible to install the gnome2 libraries alongside the gnome3 ones.
Maybe someone else more qualified than me, has the answer.
