Thanks. I just tried that and it works until you touch the volume control buttons. Then it pops back down under 100% and I have to get back I to spend setting to get the volume back up.

Re: Why no option to control volume over 100%?

That's true. My problem is that these laptops are used by children and computer illiterate people who do not understand why they can't get it loud enough and have to open settings to get the volume further up. I do not like to have to do that either, but I do at least understand how to do it! :)

Re: Why no option to control volume over 100%?

100% volume is set by the recording standard, and it's important for quality. Generally app software volume controls don't work as well as the OS or DE volume controls. Of course neither may work well, and that's a function of whoever wrote the software, not the computer brand. I actually avoid usi...

Re: Why no option to control volume over 100%?

It will always cause some distortion but shouldn't be that much. I set player volume (when necessary) to 200%. That's probably best for quality. But I'm not as fussy with the audio in video files as I am with music ... I do not know why but when I use the normal volume control to control the volume...

Re: Why no option to control volume over 100%?

Thanks. For some reason that method causes distortion on my laptops and I still have the problem when watching Netflix and other streaming services like YouTube. I'm hoping Mint adds this little check box in the sound preferences at some point and I will be right back also on those of my computers t...

Re: Why no option to control volume over 100%?

I've tried with both VLC and SMplayer but prefer being able to control the volume all the way up using the volume buttons on my laptop. A laptop will never have very good sound regardless. For now I'll just stick to Ubuntu on my Thinkpads since microphone toggle doesn't work in Mint either but works...

Re: Why no option to control volume over 100%?

Hi, Yes, Cinnamon. My laptop has volume up and down buttons I use all the time. On Mint they only take the volume up to 100% so if I want it louder playing a movie I have to open the sound settings and if I touch the volume buttons again it pops down below 100% again. On Ubuntu there's a setting to ...

I can not turn the microphone off with the media keys.

Hi,

On Ubuntu I can turn the microphone on and off with the mic button on my laptop (Thinkpad). On Linux Mint this button does nothing and I have to open the sound settings to toggle the microphone. Since I use VOIP a lot this is very impractical.

Why no option to control volume over 100%?

Hi, On Ubuntu there's an option in the sound settings to allow to set volume over 100%. This settings is important to me since I then can set full volume using the media keys on my laptop. On Mint I can only control it to what is decided as being 100% and if I want to go over that, something I often...

Re: Wondering about output on mounted file system.

The only strange thing there is that you get /dev/disk/by-uuid/ for the output of your / partition in df, I don't, I get the the device address, /dev/sda2 in my case. Personally I hate uuid's and wish they would just go away and die, in fact, maybe that accounts for the difference between us becaus...

Wondering about output on mounted file system.

Hi, In fstab on a fresh install LMDE machine I have the following: # /dev/sda5 UUID=fbcdccf4-f329-4656-8ac2-7cff4c158404 /boot ext4 rw,errors=remount-ro 0 0 # /dev/sda6 UUID=37de7813-0f65-41dd-b4ae-55912e454d0f / ext4 rw,errors=remount-ro 0 1 # /dev/sda7 UUID=4f2719cd-5e8b-4440-85d9-80db2a7e528a /ho...

Re: Media player processes that can't be killed.

That's just not good! I guess I'll go back to using ssh for my network. It's not as fast, but it works. NFS is too complicated. Thank you for letting me know.

Media player processes that can't be killed.

Hi, I have a little home network with a few Linux Mint 14 laptops and a Windows 7 desktop all tied together using Samba. The network works fine except for one issue: I have a shared folder with video files on one computer which are being played back on others in the network. We're using either Totem...

Getting VPN connected automatically.

Hi, I connect to my router with WiFi and then to the Internet through a VPN (OpenVPN configured in Network Manager). The WiFi connection is activated when I log in but I have to manually enable the VPN even though I have set it to "Connect Automatically" in Network Manager. It's no big deal having t...

Re: The Liquorix kernel on Linux Mint 14

Hi, I just installed the Liquorix kernel on another Mint 14 machine with nvidia graphics. I downloaded the graphics driver from nvidia, killed X and installed it with their installer. Works great. I also installed VirtualBox 4.2.8 on this machine and the one with nvidia graphics and it works fine al...

Re: The Liquorix kernel on Linux Mint 14

Thanks for the link! I now have the Liquorix kernel running without any problems. In fact, two problems I had with the stock Mint kernel are resolved which was the reason I wanted to try it in the first place. One was that my laptop got very hot and the other was that the screen wouldn't turn off li...

Re: The Liquorix kernel on Linux Mint 14

Thanks. As long as I can go back to the previous kernel I would be willing to try, but if it breaks my system permanently I would not.

The Liquorix kernel on Linux Mint 14

Hi,

I have run the Liquorix kernel on my LMDE machines with great success. Has anyone tried this kernel on Linux Mint 14, and if so was the install without problems? Adding the repo was not a problem, but I would like to know if it's trivial to remove it again before I try to install it myself.
