Re: Linux Mint (Cinnamon) slower than windows 10?

It's possible it's a graphics card issue. You can try running in a terminal: lspci | grep -i vga Then following the steps in this article: https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues/3736 Several users in that article recommend installing Mate to get around the graphics card issue, which can be don...

Re: Linux Mint (Cinnamon) slower than windows 10?

Is this a dual boot or just a Linux machine? I've heard numerous complaints about problems like yours when people try to dual boot with Windows 10. Although I haven't heard absolute verification of this yet, there are some who are suspicious that Windows 10 spyware is running in the background. You ...

Re: Dual Boot Networking woes

Here's an easy fix if the drives on the Linux machine are external USB drives: Follow instructions to edit fstab to auto-mount the external drives - as other posters have suggested. Install Dolphin file manager on the Linux machine https://community.linuxmint.com/software/view/dolphin Or you can use...

Re: Dual Boot Networking woes

Have you tried editing your smb.conf file to enable network discovery and file sharing on the Linux machine? http://askubuntu.com/questions/236746/how-to-turn-on-network-discovery-and-share-between-computers-with-samba The key line from the article above: in cases where Windows is involved and just ...

Re: Group ID 20 = dialout ?

I would start by setting your GID and UID figures back to 1000, then follow the instructions in the links below for making the partition sharable between Linux and OSX. Rather than turning that drive into a single unit that's shared equally, you'll make it a share that's "owned" by one OS and shared...

Re: Update Manager - 'Could not download all repository indexes'

You can edit your sources list by opening a command prompt and typing

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Then entering your password.

This will open your sources.list file in gedit with super-user permissions for that session.

Be sure to SAVE before you close GEDIT or your changes will be lost.

Re: separate drive for linux mint

The link below explains how to use chmod to set permissions for an additional drive. This particular article references an external drive but the process is basically the same for an additional internal drive. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/20584032/chmod-a-freshly-mounted-external-drive-to-set-...

Appearance Preferences hangs in Linux Mint 17.1

When I right-click on the desktop and click on Change Desktop Background, Appearance Preferences hangs for almost 30 seconds. It eventually loads everything and runs but there's always the freeze-up of the Appearance Preferences screen. I'm running Linux Mint 17.1 Mate on an IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad T60 ...

Where to find info on Physical Address Extension (PAE)

I've seen several articles stating that PAE can allow you to exceed the 3.34 Gig RAM limit on 32 bit machines. I have an old desktop that's still running Mint 13 that I'm about to upgrade to 17.1 and I'd like to make use of the PAE feature, but am not sure what kind of RAM to buy. How does one go ab...

Re: Help Glitchy Linux mint

This is a common problem on DELL laptops with Nvidia graphics cards. There's really nothing you can do at the USB step. After you install the software you can look for help on installing the proper Nvidia graphics drivers.

Look on Microsoft Sales Rep's face was priceless

I'm currently working on assembling materials for a project to assemble Open Source educational materials for a local non-profit. Since I'll be running this project I'm going to have all of the interns using Linux Mint workstations. A sales rep for a local computer company came in and was trying to ...

Thumb drives still occasionally switch to "Read Only"

This used to be more of a problem with older versions of Linux Mint but I just had it happen to me for the first time with 17.1. We have several wi-fi routers where I work and occasionally I use a wireless dongle so that I can test those networks from my desktop computer. After using the wireless do...

Re: Disappearing mouse pointer

This sounds similar to issues others have had with NVidia drivers. What kind of video card do you have installed on your system, or what kind of video driver software came with your ITX board?

Here are instructions that are a compilation of experiences others have had with Pulseaudio. It would probably be easiest for you to start with a purge and reinstallation.

Re: Cannot access shared Linux drive after running updates

I'm actually glad I did the upgrade to 17.1. I was worried that it might have greater system requirements and my old Thinkpad T60 would get kind of bogged down with it, but instead it actually seems to be running faster. I'm also having no trouble connecting between the two machines now that I've go...

Re: Cannot access shared Linux drive after running updates

I've decided I've spent too much time on this. Also, I recognize your SN from helping out others and I feel like your time is too valuable to be worrying about this issue. I'm going to wipe the hard drive and do a complete fresh install to upgrade to 17.1 and hopefully I'll no longer have this issue...

Re: Cannot access shared Linux drive after running updates

Once you put me on the trail of Samba 3.6.3 I ended up finding several notices on Ubuntu sites related to the issue with that version of Samba. What's the easiest way to roll back to an earlier version?

Re: Cannot access shared Linux drive after running updates

When I look at Synaptic on the desktop it's showing samba, samba-common and samba-common-bin. The Samba version is 3.6.3. The laptop shows the same packages and is also 3.6.3.

Re: Cannot access shared Linux drive after running updates

I changed the order of the name resolve order, added the "force user = bob" command to both smb.conf files and restarted smbd on both machines and I'm still getting the failed to mount error. I did notice a difference in the files that are in the smb.conf folder between the two machines. On the lapt...
