Re: Linux Mint on older laptop

If your refurbished laptop has a i5 first generation processor for example: Intel Core i5 M520 Then yes. the example i gave is the CPU in my laptop and it runs all linux mint versions perfectly. You can just try and install the Cinnamon 64bit edition, and see how that works for you. If you have the ...

Re: When do you Use the Workspace Switcher?

I usually move spotify, hexchat, pidgin and skype to a second workspace. Or in general when i have many apps open i keep things more organized by moving them to different workspaces.

Re: I've made a mess - desperate!

You can use a live CD/USB to boot up, from there you navigate to your filesystem or partitions and you can backup your data to an external HDD/USB.

I don't know what's causing your GUI problems, you can try reinstalling your videocard drivers by following the steps on this this page.

Re: Boot problem

Since it boots fine when manually selecting the hard drive in the system boot menu, I am guessing that your boot order is not configured correctly in BIOS/UEFI. Have you tried re-ordering this so your boot hard drive (where grub is installed) is set as the preferred option. Thank you that worked! :...

Re: Linux Mint 17.2 Kernel

The easy linux tips project site is a great resource that has helped me many times! It also helped me to upgrade java. I did it by manually installing Java and it works perfectly. If you prefer to do it the most easiest way i'll write down the steps, taken from the easy Linux project site: (You can ...

Re: Trouble dual booting Windows 10 & Linux Mint 17.2 Cinnam

Hey, I am glad it worked for you ! But, wait ! There is one more step. As I mentioned, if you run sudo update-grub it will erase the change you made in /boot/grub/grub.cfg That was just a temporary fix to see how it worked out. Now that we know it worked, we can make that Grub menuentry permanent b...

Re: Trouble dual booting Windows 10 & Linux Mint 17.2 Cinnam

I am not the best person to give advice about booting Windows, because I have not used any Windows in a long time. I do know that Windows 8 (and probably 10) has a "Fast Startup" and a "Hibernate" feature, which can prevent linux from seeing the partition. Boot up Windows and enter Windows Disk Man...

Re: Trouble dual booting Windows 10 & Linux Mint 17.2 Cinnam

I don't see anything wrong with your installation procedure, or anything wrong with your grub.cfg - EXCEPT: I have tried installing the bootloader to SDA which didn't work, after that i reinstalled Mint again but pointed the bootloader to SDA1, which also didn't work. You don't want to install grub...

Trouble dual booting Windows 10 & Linux Mint 17.2 Cinnamon

So i've been trying all afternoon to get my laptop to dual boot Windows 10 and Mint 17.2 Cinnamon and for the life of me i can't get it to work properly. In short i can't boot up to Windows 10, grub only shows a Windows Recovery Environment, when i attempt to boot from it the screen flashes back to ...

Re: File Manager lost in start menu

If you use Cinnamon, you can try rightclicking on the 'Menu'.
  • - Select 'Settings'.
    - In the following popup screen click 'open menu editor'.
    - Click 'Restore system configuration'.
See if that restores the menu.

Re: Where to install software

Thank you all for taking the time to help me out and explain things! There's actually two possible answers to this. If servio is a pretty much self contained package which has all it's own files in it's own subdirectories, I would just put that in /opt. The filesystem heirarchy standard defines /opt...
