Re: Update Manager Kernel support in 19.2 Cinnamon

Those other HWE kernels that Pjotr mentioned are for hardware systems that might be much newer or brand new in nature that might require the newer, more cutting edge kernels that have support built into them for that newest hardware. If your running an older system, the LTS, Long Term Support, kern...

Update Manager Kernel support in 19.2 Cinnamon

I have no problems running 19.2. It is a solid OS. When I click on Update Manager, then View | Linux Kernels it shows the 4.15 Kernels as supported to April 2023, the later 4.18 Kernels as End of Life, and the 5.0 Kernels as supported until February 2020. This seems strange to me. The earliest set o...

Missing desktop icons after 18.2 upgrade

I upgraded from 18.1 to 18.2 using the Update Manager and everything went smoothly during the upgrade. When I rebooted back into 18.2 everything worked except for the fact that the desktop was empty and no desktop icons showed. I found the link http://saidulhassan.com/desktop-icon-missing-upgrading-...

Re: Installing Brother scanner of MFC-J6920DW in Mint 18.1 [solved]

There is also a specific web page at https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/15 for installing the Brother printers and scanners, but since that page has some errors on it I did not try to follow it completely. What errors? 1) The changes to /lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules are evident...

Installing Brother scanner of MFC-J6920DW in Mint 18.1 [solved]

I was able to install the printer drivers for the multifunction Brother MFC-J6920DW device and print to the device using the files and instructions on the Brother web site for my multi-function device. Re: Date/Time being set incorrectly for machine

The next command works timedatectl set-local-rtc 1 --adjust-system-clock It set a local time, but that is ok. http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2016/05/time-differences-ubuntu-1604-windows-10/ Thanks, that fixed the issue. However after changing to local time Mint does not set its own time correc...

Date/Time being set incorrectly for machine

When I boot into Mint 18.1 Cinnamon I can see that the date/time is correct and the time zone is correct. Yet when I leave Mint to reboot my computer it is setting the date/time for my machine to 4 hours later than the correct date/time. Does anyone know what is going on here ? I do not think this i...

Re: Launcher which invokes sudo command

For most commands you can use -- (double dash) to indicate the end of their options; any further arguments started with a dash or double dash won't be interpreted as options for that command. And ~ to indicate your home directory is a shell shortcut; it does not work outside your command shell. So ...

Re: Launcher which invokes sudo command

Open a terminal and type the "gksudo yourprogramhere " command there. Does it work then? Does it give any errors or other information? It works if I enter the GUI program name, but does not work if I try to pass parameters to the GUI program: So if I try: gksudo ~/bin/myGuiProgram it will ask for a...

Re: Launcher which invokes sudo command

Sorry, I misunderstood. You want a launcher to run a console program with sudo? No, gksudo is only for GUI programs so use sudo instead. You can configure you want the console program to run in a terminal but unless the program waits for user input at some stage it will run and once done close the ...

Launcher which invokes sudo command

If I need root priveleges for a GUI program, called it ExecX, I can open a console window and type: sudo ExecX and after asking for my password the program executes. Running in software rendering mode

I just installed Mint 18.1 on a new machine with an NVidia GTX 960 graphics card. Booting into Mint 18.1 I see the box in the upper right corner of the screen which says "Running in software rendering mode..." etc. which sounds like I need to install something which provides hardware graphics driver...
