If I'm interpreting you correctly, then UUID/GUID '88c55591-ccd9-422c-8d91-0d23bc2bc353', which is the mount point directory for the VHD I've named 'Palemoon portable (Linux).vhd', was given that UUID/GUID by the Mint guest?

Re: UUID soup

Within the guest OS you are free to change your mount points to whatever you like, it is nothing to VirtualBox and certainly not to the (unrelated) Guest Additions. In a Linux Mint guest you can do so, for example, via the Mint menu > Disks tool (unmount > edit mount options > remount). I don't thi...

Re: UUID soup

UUID vs PARTUUID Thanks, but no cigar. I discovered the answer about 10 minutes ago. VirtualBox communicates with the Guest Additions via a slow-speed channel. Upon boot of the virtual machine, the VBox Manager sends a message to the Guest Addtions that names all the mount points of virtual hard di...

UUID soup

This is the Newbie section, and this doesn't seem like a Newbie question, but it doesn't seem to fit in any other section. In my Mint guest OS, I've attached a virtual USB stick to which VBox assigned a UUID of '88547b35-b43b-4fac-8671-b55688d6deff'. Linux mounted it automatically to '/media/mark/88...

Re: Yet another "How do I mount..." question

I meant exactly what I stated which had nothing do with parted. Please do not misrepresent me. Howdy, My mistake. When you stated that people prefer a GUI app (me, too), I thought you were rejecting 'gparted' as a CLI app, so I thought you were confusing it with 'parted' ...people do confuse them. ...

Re: Yet another "How do I mount..." question

For a new user both utilities are useful. If somebody ask how to perform disk management, I refer them the disks utility, because it is more useful for a new user. Most newer users are from the Windows or MAC world, and they are accustom to using a graphical user interface. You are thinking of 'par...

Linux is not housebroken and will not be housebroken until Linus stops playing with kernels and start...

Re: Rename mount point directory?

I've never bothered with a USB controller, but I'm assuming it operates the same as the IDE controller. Superficially, it does, but I've been advised not to use IDE for HDDs, that it should be used for CD/DVDs only. From inside the VM I have the Mint media attached as depicted in my prior post. But...

Re: Rename mount point directory?

How did you jamb that screen shot into this forum?
VM.png
Aha! I didn't know how to do that.

Note that the VHD is attached to the USB controller.

Re: Rename mount point directory?

The bottom line is this: Running Palemoon as a Linux portable app is certainly possible -- I'm here, now, in Palemoon running out of the VHD. It's not really critcal, but I'd like to rename the mount point so that it's purpose is obvious and so that I don't have deal with such a strange, long direct...

Re: Rename mount point directory?

Hmm, yea I guess I didn't understand  It's architecturally simple, but is way beyond most user's experience. I sometimes forget that. My BAD. :-) Was the VHD created on the host and if so what host :?: Host is Windows10. I don't permit Windows to have access to the Internet. I solely allow In...

Re: Rename mount point directory?

@WharfRat Thanks for replying. I'm sorry if I didn't make the situation clear -- I don't know what I don't know. VBox created the mount point. The mount point already exists. It's a virtual hard disk (VHD) mounted inside a virtual machine (VM). Mounting occurs when the VM is instantiated. I have pos...

Rename mount point directory?

Hello, All. I managed to create a VHD and attach it to Mint (running as a guest OS) into which I've un-tarred the Palemoon browser. The mount point is /media/mark/88c55591-ccd9-422c-8d91-0d23bc2bc353 Can I change the mount point to something that's not so tedious, such as /media/mark/palemoon '88c55...

Re: Yet another "How do I mount..." question

You can search for "gnome-disk-utility" in the Synaptic Package Manager. The utility's name is disks. Thank you. It was already installed, but of course I had no way to know that since it goes by 3 different names -- don't you just love Linux chaos? I think you would also find 'gparted' useful ... ...

Most new users will use the "disks" utility. It is a graphical user interface disk managment tool.
I know of no such tool. Synaptic knows of no such tool. Can you tell me more?

Yet another "How do I mount..." question

Mint 18, Cinnamon 3.0.7 running as a VM guest.

I have created a virtual HD in VBox. I launched Mint and now need to mount it & format it so I can copy a portable app to the new drive. My 'tools' are Nemo & the stuff in the Cinnamon Menu. How do I do it?

With Regards, Mark.

I just noticed that it's 'smurphos', not 'smurfos'. Is there a story there?
