How can I prevent 3 services running?

Since I run Mint 18.3 in a virtual machine, the following 3 services (which are currently running) are probably not needed. acpi_thermal_pm (priority Very High) charger_manager (priority Very High) cinnamon-screensaver (priority Normal) How can I prevent them running? I'd prefer to test a method fir...

Re: ffmpeg -i "`rm -rf /???`" ?

FWIW - $ echo /??? /bin /dev /etc /lib /mnt /opt /run /srv /sys /tmp /usr /var $ $ ls -l `which wine` lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 25 Jan 21 20:43 /usr/bin/wine -> /opt/wine-stable/bin/wine I see what 'shelling' (or whatever it's called) does, Flemur. Re: ffmpeg -i "`rm -rf /???`" ?

Can this "fellow user" be identified, or the mailing list be disarmed? The poster has been identified. I complained to ffmpeg-user-owner and requested notification regarding disposition. There was no response. A couple of minites later, a second person posted to the thread that the perpetrator real...

Re: ffmpeg -i "`rm -rf /???`" ?

hey rm -rf / will remove everything from your hardrive from root and down so you get a system that can't boot anymore so would not recommend to run that command. Hi, Mikael. That a user can be tricked into running such a shell command in an otherwise benign application is alarming. I don't understa...

ffmpeg -i "`rm -rf /???`" ?

Hello All, I have a sad and angering situation for which I need authoritative opinion. On the ffmpeg-user mailing list, a fellow user recommended that I run this: ffmpeg -i "`rm -rf /???`" -lavfi showinfo -f rawvideo -y /dev/sda Another user said that `rm -rf /???` -- note the back ticks -- causes t...

Re: [YES & NO] Windows-style links in Linux -- Is it possible?

Have you tried right click in Nemo > Make Link? That didn't work. It provoked an error box. The source file is on a mounted virtual drive. Or drag and drop in Nemo, or between Nemo and desktop holding left Alt as you drop? Ah! That works. Now, all I have to do is remember it. :-) Thanks, Steve. And...

Re: [YES & NO] Windows-style links in Linux -- Is it possible?

EDIT: Oh, are saying the bash thing worked in the menu? I didn't try it. I'll try it, but it shouldn't matter. ...stand by... Okay, adding bash "xed \"About ad blockers\"" as a Menu item did open xed with 'About ad blockers' loaded. ...stand by... But adding bash -c "xed \"~/About ad blockers\"" as...

Re: [YES & NO] Windows-style links in Linux -- Is it possible?

In some places a "rather basic" interpreter is used. Such as launching things at startup. Sometimes is requires something like bash -c "some command" instead of just the command. Running 'xed "~/About ad blockers"' works by directly launching xed. Running 'bash -c xed "About ad blockers"' is unnece...

Ohh, it's possible the basic interpreter can't understand the ~/. Try changing to the full path.
Well, I know you don't really mean "basic interpreter".

If any part of Linux doesn't know what ~/ is, Linux has more problems than I can fix.

Maybe it's because About ad blockers is different than About ad blockers .txt
That's not the reason... I had changed the name from "About ad blockers .txt" to "About ad blockers". In addition to that, it did open in xed when I double-clicked it, so "About ad blockers" (no ".txt") was valid.

Re: Windows-style links in Linux -- Is it possible?

Trying to put the link in the Cinnamon Menu didn't work. The Cinnamon Menu demanded that I specify an application. The menu editor accepted xed "~/About ad blockers" , and the menu item appears (after I moved it to 'Other'), however, clicking the new menu item opens xed with a blank page. I don't kn...

Re: Windows-style links in Linux -- Is it possible?

Okay! This: mark@mark-VirtualBox ~ $ ln -s "/media/sf_D/About ad blockers .txt" ~/ created an 'About ad blockers .txt' link in my home directory. I was even able to change its name. This process is so easy in Windows. In Linux, even with Nemo, it's painful. Now I want to put that link into the Cinna...

Re: Windows-style links in Linux -- Is it possible?

I'm not too versed on this, but try ln -s /media/sf_D /home/YourUserName replacing YourUserName as appropriate. And I assume /media/sf_D is a valid directory. mark@mark-VirtualBox ~ $ ln -s /media/sf_D /home/mark ln: failed to create symbolic link '/home/mark/sf_D': File exists Apparently, my origi...

[YES & NO] Windows-style links in Linux -- Is it possible?

Summary: Symlinks to directories (folders) work, but they are painful to make (terminal command line required). Symlinks to files also work and open in the datatype's default editor when double-clicked, but they are painful to make (terminal command line required). Symlinks in Cinnamon Menu fail. I...

$ man ls > a
$ cat a
Yes, it is! And this:
$ man ffprobe > "'man ffprobe' .txt"
did the trick. Thanks! -- Whodathought that simple redirection would do it?

[SOLVED] Convert man page to plain text -- How?

I've searched, read, experimented for a day. I've not found Joy. I need to convert 'man ffprobe' (ffprobe-all.1) to plain text. How? Background: The man pages I've found on the net seem to be all balled up between ffprobe & ffmpeg. They're just plain wrong because they don't match the 'ffprobe -h' h...

Re: Help needed with IRC

Make sure you are not in a channel that you are banned in before trying to regain your nick. As for the channel ban on #ffmpeg, you'll need to talk to them. Yeah, I finally figured out that NickServ acts as a clearinghouse for the channels, and that I needed to regain my name via NickServ before lo...
