Re: Nvidia Driver not loading after kernel upgrade

FINAL UPDATE :D I'm sure this below is detailed on this very forum as I've seen it while browsing threads here, but it didn't come immediately to hand. So from here: https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-disable-nouveau-nvidia-driver-on-ubuntu-18-04-bionic-beaver-linux How to blacklist the nouveau driver s...

Re: Nvidia Driver not loading after kernel upgrade

Continuing with this, I rolled back the kernel update and resinstalled the nvidia driver using Driver Manager - to no avail, still the same situation - nouveau still loads and then when the nvidia module tries to load it fails and complains that the GPU has already been claimed by nouveau. If I edit...

Re: VNC Viewer with ability to send special keys

Remmina If you select the option for "Grab all keyboard events (Control_R)" special keys seem to work fine - at least the Win key and Alt-F4 combo work for me when VNC to another Mint machine running vino-server You'll need both the Remmina Remote Desktop client and the VNC plugin for it - they're i...

Desktop Sharing (vino-server) - where is the config stored?

LM17.3 Cinnamon 64bit Cinnamon v2.8.8 I have enabled Desktop Sharing via the GUI and have it working with VNC protocol to another LAN connected PC over eth0. I have also firewalled the VNC ports to only accept incoming connections from a specific IP on the eth0 interface. All good so far. However, I...

Re: Very newbie thinking about switching to Linux Mint from Windows.

1. There should be no requirement to use the command line when doing an install. 2. With an older notebook, you will probably find that everything just works - although some printers are unsupported - I'm sure if you advise what make/model your printer is, someone will advise. 3. That would really d...

Re: Maximize Sound Output issues

Something to do with the malleus, incus and stapes bones (ossicles) in the ear? Was that to alleviate tinnitus symptoms? PulseAudio is indeed fine now it has stabilised and refined itself, it was a complete dog's dinner when Ubuntu first introduced it to their distro (can't remember if that was 9.04...

Re: Maximize Sound Output issues

As a general rule, yes more watts = louder (subject to the impedance of the speakers and their sensitivity). I have 120W speakers, driven by a 100W per channel amplifier which can go to stupid / hearing damaging volume levels before distortion or clipping kicks in - but they're not exactly the kind ...

Re: Understanding LinuxMint directories structure and encryption

As you have to enter two passwords on a cold boot, that indicates you have both full disk encryption and home directory encryption in place. So, two layers of encryption for your home directory effectively. The first password allows access to the full disk encryption, allowing the system to boot up ...

Re: "Replace Mint with Mint"

Not that it's any consolation -- but this is not just a Mint problem. On the Ubuntu forums, lots of folks are reporting the same "bug" -- having their Windows partitions erased when they go to "upgrade" their Ubuntu install to the new version. I don't know if "bug" is the right word for this. Sound...

Re: Prepare For New 17 on New Drive

yes - you can directly upgrade from Mint 17 LTS - to the next LTS. Ohhh - will this be with the do-release-upgrade command? As opposed to manually messing with apt sources and generally bodging it? It's good to see the Minties stepping back a little from the stupidly ~everything is beta but its shi...

Re: Prepare For New 17 on New Drive

As you have no doubt found, dragging and dropping your entire home directory can have odd results as it brings across all manner of legacy gconf and dconf settings stuff. Thunderbird and Firefox are easy though. They keep their stuff in /home/~yourusername~/.thunderbird and .mozilla respectively. No...

Your hard drive is failing. Back up your Linux home directory along with any Windows created files you want to keep to external media **NOW** Whatever you have to hand use it, burn it on DVD/CD, copy it to a USB stick or external hard drive, anything - that internal hard drive is about to leave the ...

Re: CPU Problem

If you were trying the Mint Cinammon edition, try the MATE edition as it is somewhat lighter on resources. Staying in the Ubuntu stable, you could try Lubuntu which is Ubuntu reskinned with the LXDE desktop and is more lightweight again http://lubuntu.net/ If you want to venture further within the s...

Re: Deleting Stuff!

I'm not sure which desktop you are using (MATE or Cinnamon or ??) but you don't need an entire X session running as root to achieve your goal. You can simply run your file explorer with admin privileges instead using the gksu command. From a terminal enter the command: For MATE gksu caja I think Cin...

I've not run the installer for ver 17 yet, but I seem to remember on previous versions there being some kind of Continue or Next option on that screen.

Re: Which Driver to use

Sorry to hear that - is that on Mint 17 or Mint 13? In any case it shouldn't require a reinstall to remedy. If you boot up now you likely end up with a mangled display or no display at all right? Once you see the hard drive activity cease after booting you should be able to use the key combination C...

Re: Which Driver to use

The nVidia website recommends the version 304.88 driver for that card so it seems correct that your system is recommending the nvidia-304 version 304-117-Oubuntu1 driver.

It's still early days for the Qiana 17 distribution, so there may be the odd quirky issue to resolve.
