Re: Diagnosing an Unresponsive Machine at Boot

Sediat, The symptoms you describe are exactly the same as those I have experienced. It is possible, therefore, that your system has reacted in the same way to the same update. You can check which kernel version you are using quite easily. Open up a terminal prompt (on my Cinnamon desktop the Termina...

Re: Diagnosing an Unresponsive Machine at Boot

Rob - and anyone else who comes across this topic - the thread that you link to, recommending the 4.15.0.15 kernel, was posted in May last year - it is 8 months old. If you look at the first post I made in this thread, you will see that I am already using (successfully), 4.15.0.43.45... Linux kernel...

Re: Diagnosing an Unresponsive Machine at Boot

Hello Acewiza... Thanks for joining in. This machine doesn't have an AMD card - in fact, it uses an Intel Core i7 7700T CPU with integrated Intel HD Graphics, so I am using that for all display out. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Rob, I've already done as you suggest and removed the newer kernel; I am now bac...

Re: Diagnosing an Unresponsive Machine at Boot

Rob, When you write, "with very few system details posted" does that mean that you think that Mint doesn't post sufficient details regarding possible root cause, or that I have failed to provide enough information to help triage? If the latter, then I am more than happy to dig in to log files and di...

Re: Diagnosing an Unresponsive Machine at Boot

Second Update OK, so I've been tinkering around with this for a while now. What I've determined is:- When running with the latest kernel (4.15.0.44.46), 1. Leaving the machine at the initial login screen for any length of time will result in the keyboard and mouse disabling after a yet-to-be-determi...

Re: Diagnosing an Unresponsive Machine at Boot

First brief update... Now had a chance to experiment a bit more and I can confirm that the issue actually seems to be linked to the start of the screen saver, not necessarily linked to boot. If I power up, log in, use the machine for half an hour, then leave the machine until the screen saver kicks ...

Diagnosing an Unresponsive Machine at Boot

I'm running a 19.0/Tara 64-bit build with a Cinnamon desktop. Yesterday Mint Update sent me a new kernel version, upgrading me from 4.15.0.43.45 to 4.15.0.44.46 - a process that was smooth and completed flawlessly. However, today, twice in a row, I've seen an oddity and system boot time. The machine...

spamassassin and Max File Size

Hello everyone... This is a question concerning the configuration of spamassassin, which I use with great effect with my email client (I use Claws-Mail, but it works well with many other email programs). I am using the default configuration of spamassassin, but from time to time I receive an email t...

Quick Question on Google Earth

Running Mint 19.0 Tara / 64-Bit Up and running on the Cinnamon desktop, I noticed that my "Update Manager" shield, showing in the "System Tray" area of the menu bar, has a red cross on it... A check of the utility itself shows a simple error message:- "The repository 'http://dl.google.com/linux/eart...

Re: Warning: Claws-Mail and Mint 19.0

Yes, that's a fair point. On the other hand, the file structure of Claws-Mail's meta-data has remained un-changed and version-compatible since I started using it in 2005, when it was "Sylpheed". The actual changes that have been implemented are not 100% incompatible - if you upgrade, an older versio...

Upgrade Failure - Offer of Analysis Materials

Sorry but not sure what to do here. Earlier today I attempted to "mintupdate" from an 18.3 build to 19.0. That attempt looked OK during the preliminary validation process, but then went very wrong during the actual update, ultimately leaving me without a working machine. I was eventually able to get...

Re: Linux Mint 19 won't install at all (dual boot Windows-10)

Hello Barry, Just a footnote to Pierre's question regarding the USB stick [which, by the way, is a much faster and much easier way to install Mint that optical drive]. There are 2 versions of Mint 19.0 ISOs. I also have a dual-boot system, with an SSD, that dual-boots with Windows 10. I just spent a...

Warning: Claws-Mail and Mint 19.0

I suspect that I am in a very small minority of users still running Claws-Mail [forked child of Sylpheed]... but it's small, lightweight, fast and, most importantly, text only. Which means that it won't trigger any html-embedded nasties that someone might try to send you... When I upgraded to Mint 1...

Mailing List Compromised?

Hello all... I am posting to ask if anyone is aware of a possible compromise to the Mint mailing list... I hold several internet domain names and my registered account to Mint and the Mint forums is literally "mint@" and my domain. I have just received an email from "OmiseGO Gold", with the subject ...

Re: Possible Change in "xrandr" behavior?

Thanks for all the contributions - they are very much appreciated. Last night I spent about 2 hours working through the options - without success. In the end, with 30 minutes of time remaining before I had to stop for the night, I decided I'd double-check my installation process [this was on a clean...

Re: Possible Change in "xrandr" behavior?

Hello PowerWagon, Many thanks for responding... I do have the nVidia X Server Settings application. When I launch it, I do indeed see my three displays and I do observe that, at the outset, they appear in the wrong order. I am able to use the application to reorder them so that they appear correctly...

Possible Change in "xrandr" behavior?

Hello Everyone, I'd be grateful for any advice on what I might be doing wrong when attempting to set up my triple monitors to work with 19.0 Tara... I am very sorry that the explanation that follows is a bit long - but I can't see how to shorten this and still give a basic outline to the problem... ...

Security - A Guide for Securing Mint

Well, OK, this report: https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/guidance/eud-security-guidance-ubuntu-1804-lts , from the UK Government's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has provided some guidelines for securing Ubuntu 18.04 - so not quite explicitly Mint - although 18.04 is of course the foundation on which M...
