Quick Question on Google Earth

Running Mint 19.0 Tara / 64-Bit Up and running on the Cinnamon desktop, I noticed that my "Update Manager" shield, showing in the "System Tray" area of the menu bar, has a red cross on it... A check of the utility itself shows a simple error message:- "The repository 'http://dl.google.com/linux/eart...

Re: Warning: Claws-Mail and Mint 19.0

Yes, that's a fair point. On the other hand, the file structure of Claws-Mail's meta-data has remained un-changed and version-compatible since I started using it in 2005, when it was "Sylpheed". The actual changes that have been implemented are not 100% incompatible - if you upgrade, an older versio...

Upgrade Failure - Offer of Analysis Materials

Sorry but not sure what to do here. Earlier today I attempted to "mintupdate" from an 18.3 build to 19.0. That attempt looked OK during the preliminary validation process, but then went very wrong during the actual update, ultimately leaving me without a working machine. I was eventually able to get...

Re: Linux Mint 19 won't install at all (dual boot Windows-10)

Hello Barry, Just a footnote to Pierre's question regarding the USB stick [which, by the way, is a much faster and much easier way to install Mint that optical drive]. There are 2 versions of Mint 19.0 ISOs. I also have a dual-boot system, with an SSD, that dual-boots with Windows 10. I just spent a...

Warning: Claws-Mail and Mint 19.0

I suspect that I am in a very small minority of users still running Claws-Mail [forked child of Sylpheed]... but it's small, lightweight, fast and, most importantly, text only. Which means that it won't trigger any html-embedded nasties that someone might try to send you... When I upgraded to Mint 1...

Mailing List Compromised?

Hello all... I am posting to ask if anyone is aware of a possible compromise to the Mint mailing list... I hold several internet domain names and my registered account to Mint and the Mint forums is literally "mint@" and my domain. I have just received an email from "OmiseGO Gold", with the subject ...

Re: Possible Change in "xrandr" behavior?

Thanks for all the contributions - they are very much appreciated. Last night I spent about 2 hours working through the options - without success. In the end, with 30 minutes of time remaining before I had to stop for the night, I decided I'd double-check my installation process [this was on a clean...

Re: Possible Change in "xrandr" behavior?

Hello PowerWagon, Many thanks for responding... I do have the nVidia X Server Settings application. When I launch it, I do indeed see my three displays and I do observe that, at the outset, they appear in the wrong order. I am able to use the application to reorder them so that they appear correctly...

Possible Change in "xrandr" behavior?

Hello Everyone, I'd be grateful for any advice on what I might be doing wrong when attempting to set up my triple monitors to work with 19.0 Tara... I am very sorry that the explanation that follows is a bit long - but I can't see how to shorten this and still give a basic outline to the problem... ...

Security - A Guide for Securing Mint

Well, OK, this report: https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/guidance/eud-security-guidance-ubuntu-1804-lts , from the UK Government's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has provided some guidelines for securing Ubuntu 18.04 - so not quite explicitly Mint - although 18.04 is of course the foundation on which M...

Re: Question on Update Manager

Thanks for the pointer about duplicated repositories... That isn't anything I've done - no manual changes there [that I'm aware of].

I've uploaded a screen image of Update Manager for you, here: http://www.saurian.org/update-manager/.

Question on Update Manager

This evening (Wednesday, 25th July, 2018), I've launched the native Update Manager and it is advising me that there is an update to the tomcat8 servlet engine to be installed. The weird thing is, I don't have any version of Tomcat installed on my system. So my question is: why would "Update Manager"...

Re: HDMI + Sound + Mint 18

I have this problem too, on a machine running an Asus H170i motherboard, with an Intel 7700T CPU and with three Dell UW2415 Monitors. I've been trawling the web looking for the solution to this problem, but I'm starting to suspect that PulseAudio is not the true root cause, but perhaps it's an inter...

Re: nVidia Driver Install - crashing dpkg...

Final update... Eventually, I was able to get this to work. The problem turned out to be a compatibility issue between the latest kernels, which for Mint are Meltdown and Spectre-safe, compared with the packaged nVidia driver. It turns out that the version of the nVidia driver which is automatically...

Re: Design Flaw With Installation Process...

5. Here's the issue... After completing the basic build and update and going to "Driver Manager" to deploy the nVidia driver, the *version* of the nVidia driver that I get from "Driver Manager" today is *different* from the version I got when I first successfully built my 18.3 image. In other words...

Re: Design Flaw With Installation Process...

Michael, Thank you very much for the helpful pointer. I can confirm for other readers that the application of kernel 4.13.0-37 does indeed solve this problem. This confirms the conclusion you drew in your response, which is that there is a compatibility issue between the nVidia proprietary driver an...

Design Flaw With Installation Process...

I'm honestly not sure if this is a bug report or an enhancement request; it might be a bit of both. I've just recently had to attempt a re-installation of Mint 18.3, after an Update Manager series of updates bricked my machine all the way down to "kernel panic"... Unfortunately, as I'll explain belo...
