Re: How to keep old encrypted /home partition with fresh LM 21.2 install?

With my desktop, I tried the settings xenopeek suggested, and which worked on my laptop. I was able to access my encrypted ~/ directory with no problem, right away. It looks like everything has worked out. Thanks to everyone for the help you gave, and especially to xenopeek for the very useful advic...

Re: Mate panels disappeared; mate-panel replace results in segfault

I just tried something that I was originally worried would be too radical: I renamed my entire ./config directory, then logged out and back in. Lo and behold, when I did so, I had a panel on the bottom of my screen, but my window decorations, icons, etc. were as I had originally set them. The panel ...

Re: Mate panels disappeared; mate-panel replace results in segfault

2) Slip the entire household catalog into the new profile. Thank you for that idea. However, I really, really want to avoid having to transfer files between accounts if at all possible. I have a pretty large /home directory, it's encrypted, and I've been bitten before with losing access to my home ...

Re: Mate panels disappeared; mate-panel replace results in segfault

I just tried one more thing, to get a data point: running gkrellm. Turned out it wasn't installed yet. I installed it, then ran it from the terminal. It worked! My old theme was in place, and the display even shoved other windows out of the way, acting like a pseudo-panel. But, still no real panels....

Re: Mate panels disappeared; mate-panel replace results in segfault

Per igmint's suggestion, I tried copying the .config files to a USB drive, then loading them in my alternate profile. Nothing caused the panels to disappear. I tried various things that I am now forgetting: copying over the .config files, logging out and back in, replacing the home directory .gtkrc-...

Re: Mate panels disappeared; mate-panel replace results in segfault

Okay, I just tried the two dconf commands you suggested. No change; still no panels. I also tried doing dconf reset -f / between the dump and load commands. Still no luck. I then tried doing the dconf commands with the guest account, transferring them to a USB disk in order to access the dumped file...

Re: Mate panels disappeared; mate-panel replace results in segfault

Good idea. I created a new user and logged in as that user; the panel generated as it should. (With the default Mate configuration.) I don't want to use that user long-term; I have lots of stuff in my main account's /home directory that I want to keep. In other words, I want to maintain my main acco...

Re: Mate panels disappeared; mate-panel replace results in segfault

Hmm, I was hoping to not have to rebuild all my panels from scratch. (I have a fairly large amount of customization in my theme.) But okay. I just tried mate-panel --reset , and it didn't help. Still no panels. I tried logging out and back in; still no panels. I also just tried resetting the p...

[SOLVED] Mate panels disappeared; mate-panel replace results in segfault

I just installed 21.2 over my previous 19.1 install. I'm using my original, existing /home directory, which has so far worked great, I think. When I log in, I can see that my controls, window border, and icons themes have applied correctly. My desktop background also applies correctly. However, I ge...

Re: How to keep old encrypted /home partition with fresh LM 21.2 install?

I wouldn't call it a bug. Encryption is supposed to be difficult by nature. Well, i guess we disagree. If it's not reliably possible to maintain an encrypted directory through a system upgrade when I am the same user and I have the password , that means an encrypted directory is only good for four ...

Re: How to keep old encrypted /home partition with fresh LM 21.2 install?

To be clear you do not have an encrypted /home partition. You have an encrypted home directory. That is, only files in your /home/username/ directory are encrypted, not the entire /home partition. Though if you're the only user on the system you may consider that the same thing it's important to ma...

Okay, thanks for the correction in terms. But I'd still like to know, how do I keep my encrypted /home partition?

Re: How best to preserve an encrypted /home partition through an update to 21.2?

Sorry, I don't know the right term. I plan to use a bootable USB stick to install 21.2. I currently have 19.1 installed. Is that considered an "update", "upgrade", or something else? (Yes, I should've up-whatevered a while ago. Sometimes life gets in the way.) Hopefully my curren...

[SOLVED] How to keep old encrypted /home partition with fresh LM 21.2 install?

I have a 19.1 system that I need to update with 21.2. I'll be doing a fresh install but want to keep my encrypted /home partition. The last time I did a major version update, I somehow messed up access to my old, encrypted /home partition, making it basically unusable. I would really like to avoid t...

Re: Can't mount hard drive; apparent bad superblock; not sure if ext2/ext3/ext4; next steps?

Hmm... Is it dangerous to reboot the system? I'm wondering if that is more likely to solve problems or create them.

Re: Can't mount hard drive; apparent bad superblock; not sure if ext2/ext3/ext4; next steps?

You can open smart data in the Disks menu. That option is greyed out in the Disks menu. All the hamburger menu options for that disk are greyed out; and in the little gear icon below the Volumes figure (which just shows "No media"), the only non-greyed out option is "Edit Mount Optio...

Re: Can't mount hard drive; apparent bad superblock; not sure if ext2/ext3/ext4; next steps?

When I run sudo fdisk -l , /dev/sdb isn't listed at all. The list just jumps right from /dev/sda to the next disk in line. Same with sudo parted -l and cat /proc/partitions ; they list the various sda partitions, and then the partitions of the next disk in line, with no mention of sdb at all. When I...

Re: Can't mount hard drive; apparent bad superblock; not sure if ext2/ext3/ext4; next steps?

This output is contradicting to an output of sudo fsck /dev/sdb1 in your previous comment. Yes, it contradicts it, because the situation changed between me running sudo fsck /dev/sdb1 and mke2fs -n . I'm not sure which command it was that made /sdb1 no longer a visible partition; perhaps opening gp...
