but recognize most users (especially newbies) aren't able to repair Grub on their own. Well, I put together my first Linux system 25 years ago, and I'm generally pretty computer-savvy, but I find myself always fighting with Grub. It seems it should be reasonably straightforward in principle, but di...

Re: Linux Mint 19 FDE across multiple drives—the right way?

It's been two years and I promised I'd post an update: I've had no problem with updates, including kernel and boot updates, but I've been reluctant to try upgrading from Tara I haven't gotten hibernation working yet, but I honestly haven't tried hard—I can put my laptop to sleep for days, not plugge...

Re: Moving/resizing modal dialogues (e.g. File Open)

Wow, thanks for all that advice. I did the `find` command you suggested, and `chown`ed the handful of directories and files it returned back to me. Hopefully that won't cause further problems. And I did know about Ctrl+L, but there's at least one place where it doesn't work—saving a screenshot or pr...

Re: Warning: Critical issue in base-files 19.0.2 update

tl;dr: Thank you. It was the first time in about eight months that I needed to reboot my computer, and apparently I chose the wrong day. ;-) I agree with Voltron, and thank you for the easy-to-follow instructions. I had to get pointed to this thread by posting another, but in the end, this was the e...

Re: Mint 19 system stopped booting. Boot Repair wants a new partition. I'm sceptical.

Oddly, Boot Repair knows the latter fact (which is how I know it), but still wants to put Grub on sda. Belts and suspenders, I guess. I just did a websearch, to try to find where Boot Repair is maintained, to see if my log would help them improve the tool. No joy. Would you happen to know who maint...

Yes, that was the problem! That was the easiest fix for a boot problem ever! Thanks so much, people! :D

SOLVED: Mint 19 system stopped booting. Boot Repair wants a new partition. I'm sceptical.

I've been happily running Mint on my Lenovo P51 for a couple of years, and specifically Mint 19 for at least several months, probably since last year. I rarely need to reboot, but when I did the other day, it didn't come up. Symptom: On reboot, after I type the keys for my encrypted drives, I get a ...

SOLVED: Moving/resizing modal dialogues (e.g. File Open)

Ever since I updated to Mint 19, and thus Cinnamon 3.8.9, I haven't been able to move File Save and other modal dialogues out of the way. I can sort-of resize them, but they always remain centred on the parent window. I did not have this problem before the update. I believe I did, however, have to t...

Re: Can't resize modal window in 17.3

It is not resizable. Sorry. I'm pretty sure it used to be, though, or at least it respected `org.gnome.shell.overrides attach-modal-dialogs`. I've regularly been cursing this restriction since I updated to Mint 19 (and thus Cinnamon 3.8.9). Modal dialogues, like file dialogues, get in the way all t...

Re: Tiny fonts and dialogues in some apps

So it turns out that smurphos is right, and Zoom is a Qt app. InSync is too. And Qt looks for environment variables that can fix the problems I was having: QT_SCALE_FACTOR and QT_AUTO_SCREEN_SCALE_FACTOR. In my case, QT_SCALE_FACTOR=2 produced the best results, but QT_AUTO_SCREEN_SCALE_...

Re: Tiny fonts and dialogues in some apps

Zoom is I think QT based? You may have some luck configuring font sizes in the QT Settings app which you should find in the menu. Hey, wow! I've coded Qt apps, but I had no idea there was a Qt configuration app like this! I've tried changing the settings, but they don't seem to affect Zoom. Is this...

I'm guessing you've have got a HIDPI display?
I'm honestly not sure—I'll have to research a lot of what you're talking about here. But I'm only using gimp 2.8.22, so I'll try updating to 2.10 to see if that works better. Cheers.

Are those apps Flatpaks or regular apps?
I had a quick look at what a flatpak is, and I don't think they're those. I installed gimp with Aptitude; Zoom and Insync were `.deb` files, and NetExtender was a tarball that came with an installation script.

Re: Tiny fonts and dialogues in some apps

Hi. Thanks, but that only affects the text that are already the correct size. Like I said, it's only some applications, like Zoom, InSync and gimp that have this issue; most apps, like Chrome, Slack, and Cinnamon itself, are fine, and I don't want to mess with those. I don't think it's a Cinnamon se...

Tiny fonts and dialogues in some apps [SOLVED for Zoom, Insync and other Qt apps]

G'day peeps, While most third-party apps look great in my Mint 19 installation: vim, Chrome, Slack, etc., a few of them have tiny dialogues and fonts, which make them very difficult to use. The main offenders are gimp and the Zoom netmeeting app, and now one of my clients needs me to use a Java-base...

Re: How to add encryption when installing with "something else" option? [solved]

My 'something else' for my new Mint 19 installation was putting /home on a partition on a different drive, and encrypting that partition too. I ended up skipping 'something else' and installing with all the defaults, and then creating an encrypted partition using the Gnome Disk Utility, manually mes...
