Re: Would Linux Reduce Ransomware Attacks?

Thanks for all your replies and the links, I learned a lot by reading them. The points made in that article over at How to Geek ( http://www.howtogeek.com/141944/htg-explains-why-windows-has-the-most-viruses/ ) made sense to me, saying that Windows was more vulnerable because: 1- Historically, MS op...

Would Linux Reduce Ransomware Attacks?

I keep seeing a lot of articles like this one -- www.washingtonpost.com/business/2019/08/20/ransomeware-attacks-are-an-expensive-threat-city-state-governments-wont-ebb-anytime-soon/ The article tells how a Florida city agreed to pay a $600,000 ransom to get its systems back after a ransomware attack...

Re: [SOLVED]Laggy Mint 19 (xfce)

I'll report back when I have access to it next week. Please don't hijack someone else's thread. OP stated that his/her laptop was laggy, specifically "I found it laggy in many ways, not something big, but I surely could see the small problems..." This is what I am responding to. I'm sorry but I don...

Re: [SOLVED]Laggy Mint 19 (xfce)

I ran into this same problem. Out of 5 upgrades to Mint 19 / Xfce (from Mint 17), 3 were laggy. For example, if you played AisleRiot solitaire, when you moved a card on the screen, it might "stick" for a second or two before moving. Usable, but disturbing if you're used to the traditional quick inte...

Re: Which Linux distribution works best for these computers?

With 2 gig memory, you can run Mint with Xfce without swapping for most uses. However, both your CPUs are listed on the "Low End CPUs" benchmark chart over at www.cpubenchmark.net/low_end_cpus.html with passmarks of significantly less than 1,000. The T2310 benches at 730, your 530 at 468. So I would...

Re: how change the user and root password in linux mint 19?

To change a user id password, you can open a terminal window and type in the command -- $ passwd It will prompt you for your current password, then allow you to enter a new one to change it. To change the root user id password, open a terminal window then switch to the root user id -- $ su root Then...

Re: Intermittent hardware problems - Linux Mint 19

Wow, this is a tough one. My instinct would be to first to authoritively determine whether this is a hardware problem of some sort, or a Mint issue. I don't know whether this will help but here are my thoughts.... Do you get these behaviors if you live boot other linux distros? If you do, it's likel...

Re: rare occasions of SSD hard drive not being detect by BIOS

I support a bunch of older computers and every now and then I run into one that usually boots fine, but at rare intervals does not. For example, right now I have one that the display is usually fine, but sometimes mint fails to grab it properly and I have to reboot. My supposition is that some of th...

Re: Linux Mint 19 Update Manager Has Never Worked

I support a flock of Mint machines running 17 and 19 with Xfce. I had one machine where the Update function icon suddenly disappeared from the panel. I had to manually start it from a terminal window -- 1- start terminal window 2- switch user to root --- su root 3- issue -- mintupdate & This allowed...

Re: Timeshift recovery into different partition?

Yes, I understand that you can back up to any target disk or partition that you want. My question is about recovery. Can you recover your backup into a different partition on a different computer? I believe the answer is Yes, but I want to know what changes might be involved. My guess is that you ha...

Re: Question on system requirements

@Air69buddy, even though your computer dates from 2007, with your dual-core 5600+ cpu and 6 gig memory, you've easily got enough hardware power to run Mint with Xfce or Mate as your desktop environment. It's just a question of whether the newer versions of Mint will run on your older hardware in ter...

Re: Old Gateway motherboard (Phenom II cpu) not all USB ports working

If you haven't already, reseat the wires going to the usb's, and any pin or board connectors. The external metal leads used for many USB ports are supercheap and bad. They corrode very easily. Use an old usb memory stick and just jam it in and out a bunch of times. That might clear the leads. Or use...

Re: Budget non-gaming desktop build

Is your goal a cheap budget computer -- or the desire to build it yourself? If you just want a budget PC, you can buy a rebuild off Amazon for $100 to $200 US. Just search on "refurbished desktop" or "refurbished laptop". Most come with Windows installed but you can wipe that off and easily install ...

Re: XFCE not configure automaticly projector

I have used Mint 19 with Xfce to give lectures. I plug the projector into the VGA output on the laptop. The projected screen looks just like the one on my laptop -- same screen resolution. I use a Lenovo laptop for this, and I press a PF key on the Lenovo to switch the screen to the projector. I bel...

Timeshift recovery into different partition?

Can you use Timeshift to copy an instance to into a different partition number on a different computer?

My guess is Yes, but you'd have to (1) change the fstab and (2) update Grub accordingly after the "install" on the different computer.

Is this correct?

Thank you.

Re: linux mint 19 freezes at shut down

I install Mint on old dual core machines and occasionally run across one that only shuts down to the message "Computer Halted" showing on the display. Then I have to physically press the On/Off button to actually turn off the computer's power. Is this the problem you're having? Sometimes this can be...
