I do not have access to Mate system but on Cinnamon, right click pnel, go to panel settings, click add new panel. Should be something similar in Mate, I presume. I know it is not exactly the requested feature, but it might help OP.

Maybe adding an extra panel can be a temporary solution to your problem.

Try unplugging the power cable and then shut it down.

An interim solution until kernel picks up a patch (saw a fix in Fedora forums for others looking for a permanent solution).

Can any one of those unfortunate souls with a rtl8723ae wireless nic confirm if the bloody realtek magnificent design interferes with sound playback?
