Re: How to upgrade to Linux Mint 19

Yikes! So I installed 18.3. Then applied all the updates. That was a mistake. That gave it 19.0 boot/login performance. I may have to find a different distro :( This is not acceptable behaviour. ETA: That wouldn't have mattered. This problem exists due to a regression bug introduced into the kernel,...

<SOLVED> Boot takes 5 times longer on kernel 4.15

Upgraded 18.3 to 19 today, no issues, all went fine. The only "issue" maybe is the slow boot, much slower than before. Beautiful release, thanks Clem! "Much slower" may be an understatement. Now, admittedly, booting off USB2 and what some may regard as an "antiquated" system (Dell Latitude D530, In...

Re: How To Revert/Rollback Java?

I guess it's not possible to do it the right way, because it would appear Ubuntu removed the last version. I'll just put the last version back, by hand, from backup.

How To Revert/Rollback Java?

Re: An Example Of Why Linux Has Not Won and Never Will Win The Desktop

It's possible for the normal x-86 Linux to win the desktop and laptop if Google acquires Canonical-Ubuntu or Clem-Linux Mint, for example. *shudder* -- I think I'd have to move to FreeBSD--or at least a Linux not derived from, or in any way dependent upon, Ubuntu. Just curious (and not disagreeing)...

Re: An Example Of Why Linux Has Not Won and Never Will Win The Desktop

In regards to Linux winning the Desktop war - I actually believe it is inevitable for a mass of reasons, many of which are NOT presented here! I stand by my original complaint. As long as end-users have to deal with annoyances like caps lock indicators not working because kernel devs can't be susse...

Re: An Example Of Why Linux Has Not Won and Never Will Win The Desktop

Thanks for the suggestion, but there's a reason I install only LTS releases. All 18.x releases are LTS releases. That wasn't the point. The point was I install LTS releases so I don't have to go through the ordeal of upgrading every time I turn around. This release has another two years to EOL, unl...

Hi "JSeymour", You know that you are using an older Linux Mint v17 instead of the newer 18.x where you could ... Thanks for the suggestion, but there's a reason I install only LTS releases. Two, actually: I've never had a Linux upgrade actually result in a functional system. These systems I install...

Re: An Example Of Why Linux Has Not Won and Never Will Win The Desktop

From the Corsair website- Compatibility: Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista I don't see Linux listed. So why is it Linux developers' fault you didn't observe the compatibility, or at least test it on a compatible OS before returning? Yeah, if Linux is not in the list, then don't exp...

Re: An Example Of Why Linux Has Not Won and Never Will Win The Desktop

You know what they say about "assumptions." E.g.: Lesson to learn is make a little research first before buying. I read every Q&A on the Amazon product page. The keyboard is all locally-configurable (incl. creating and saving macros). Didn't care about the media keys. It would never have occurred to...

An Example Of Why Linux Has Not Won and Never Will Win The Desktop

I like Linux. Use it nearly exclusively. Been using it nearly exclusively as a desktop since Red Hat 5. Have never used anything but Unix, FreeBSD or Linux on servers. But sometimes Linux Really Annoys Me  My new keyboard is a case in point. Bought a nice Corsair K55 that suits me in every res...

Got mine working, but don't know how. I will tell you what I think it was though. Use this at own risk, I can't help if it causes problems. Do this in Terminal. Always best if you have some kind of Backup Image. sudo mate-screensaver Hit Enter and enter your password and hit Enter again. You will l...

Don't know. Haven't tried that, at home, recently. It's working on my laptop, at work.

"Activate screensaver when computer is idle" Stopped Working

Hi All, System: Linux Mint 17 Qiana MATE Recently the automatic activation of the screensaver when the desktop is idle stopped working. Eventually the "Put display to sleep when inactive for..." kicks in, but, the screensaver no longer does. Tried turning "Activate screensaver when computer is idle"...

Re: Linux Mint 17 (Qiana) MATE Kernel Updates?

Thanks for the info, karichen. I'd since done some more research (my bad for not having done so in the first place) and found that the updated kernel in question was available. I do find it curious, and somewhat disturbing, however, that the last "Recommended" and, until I manually selected 3.13.0-1...

Linux Mint 17 (Qiana) MATE Kernel Updates?

Re: Rygel Media (DLNA) Server?

The motto in free software does not stand for free beer but for openness and freedom :) Written much open source software, have you? Because I have. For longer than there's been an Internet. Literally. So please to not be trying to teach me what "free" vs. "open source" means :) Yes I did. And you ...
